Student Programme Handbook 2008 Bachelor of Information Technology On commencement of each assessment (for either class work or Design Project) students will be given a schedule which defines the assessment objectives, submission requirements, timings, assessment methods and criteria and levels of achievement. Grades Assessment in this degree programme is criterion-referenced. Achievement is described by grades. The following grade table applies to all BIT courses. Students may apply for RPL according to the Otago Polytechnic RPL policy (AP501.05). RPL will not apply to IT301 Project. The Recognition of Prior Learning includes both formal and experiential learning and Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) and is the granting of credit towards a qualification as a consequence. RPL therefore includes: • Credit Transfer (CT) • Cross Crediting (CC), and • Assessment of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) • Advanced Standing © Otago Polytechnic 31
Student Programme Handbook 2008 Bachelor of Information Technology The purpose of RPL is to acknowledge and give academic credit for parts of a qualification. Usually a successful RPL application means that the applicant needs to enrol in less than a full programme in order to complete the relevant qualification. The applicant may thus save time and money in completing the qualification. Progression Cross Credit A person who has completed an academic qualification at an approved place of learning may apply for credit towards the Bachelor of Information Technology degree at Otago Polytechnic. The Head of Department shall approve the cross-credits to be allowed in each case. • A student who has fulfilled all the requirements of a National Diploma in Business Computing (NDBC) will be required to complete directed study. • A student who has fulfilled the requirements of the New Zealand Diploma in Business will be required to complete directed study. This would normally require two further years full-time study (see example path of study Appendix A). • A student who has fulfilled all the requirements of the CCHNE will be required to complete directed study. This would normally require 2 years further study. • Students who wish to transfer to the degree programme from other external programmes (i.e. not yet completed) may be admitted and will be appropriately cross-credited following application to the Head of Department. Applications for cross credit will be received by the Programme Manager. The decision on appropriate credit transfer will be made by the Academic Panel, on the basis of evidence supplied by the student. A prescribed fee is payable on approval of application. A student who gains a cross-credit for a paper is deemed to have gained a pass in that paper. If students wish to gain a grade for the paper they must enrol and complete the assessment(s). Provided the prerequisites are met, students may take papers from a mixture of levels (years) until they have completed the requirements. Students are advised to complete the majority of their programme of study in sequence. Failure to meet acceptable standards A student may not enrol in any one paper more than three times. Progress will be deemed insufficient if a full time student fails more than half of the enrolled programme in any one year. If a student fails to make sufficient academic progress, they can be required to take time out of the programme at the discretion of the Head of Department. Reassessments/Resits/Resubmissions Resist/Reassessments do not form a part of the assessment procedures for the Bachelor of Information Technology. Resubmission is where an original assessment is returned to the student for minor reworking and then being resubmitted for final grade. Where a student achieves a D grade for any assessment, an application for resubmission may be made to the Head of Department. A maximum of two resubmissions will be permitted in any one year for any student. © Otago Polytechnic 32
