<strong>Schantz</strong> <strong>Park</strong><br />

The <strong>Schantz</strong> <strong>Park</strong> <strong>Historic</strong> <strong>District</strong>, a garden-like neighborhood in<br />

<strong>Oakwood</strong>, is unusually rich in early twentieth-century American<br />

architecture and detail. In fact, The National Register of <strong>Historic</strong><br />

Places has praised The <strong>Schantz</strong> <strong>Park</strong> <strong>Historic</strong> <strong>District</strong> as one of the finest<br />

nominations they have ever received.<br />

Intact examples of Craftsman, Tudor, Italian Renaissance, Spanish<br />

Eclectic, Mission, Queen Anne, Georgian, and Colonial Revivals are<br />

well represented. Rare styles such Châteauesque, Beaux Arts and<br />

International can also be seen in this park-like setting.<br />

In 1880, German immigrant, Dayton civic leader, and successful<br />

entrepreneur (meat packing and breweries) Adam <strong>Schantz</strong>, Sr. purchased<br />

108 acres of land in what is now <strong>Oakwood</strong>. Although he did not<br />

expect to live long enough to see the final result, he tasked his family<br />

with the challenge of turning this property into the most desirable<br />

residential district in the Dayton area, distanced from the noise and<br />

challenges of the industrial city. After his death in 1902, his son, Adam<br />

<strong>Schantz</strong>, Jr., who shared his father’s energy, business acumen and civic<br />
