Letter from the President & CEO and the Chair of the Board
It all begins here. With a pair of tennis shoes, a book, a microwave, or even a computer, lives begin to
change. In 2009, 916,971 donations helped fund the job training and skills building services for 22,819
individuals throughout Central Virginia and Hampton Roads. There are many steps in between the
donor’s closet and the individual’s success in the workforce, but it is the sheer volume of your donations
that becomes the power behind our work. At Goodwill, we look to our partner, our community,
to succeed on our mission every day. And we thank you for our successes in 2009.
Our job is to make the most from these donations. In 2009, we closed one store- Southside Plaza; moved
one store- Ironbridge; and opened one store- Portsmouth. We effectively decentralized production efforts
to become more self-sufficient. We improved operations at outlets, auctions, and all retail locations. We
reduced trash costs and increased our contributions to our mission. We made changes in 2009 so we can
work smarter in 2010… 2010 is the beginning of a focused effort to grow our Donated Goods Program.
By building our Donated Goods Program- our stores, donation centers, and retail workforce- we continue
to create workplace opportunities and advance our mission in all the communities that we serve.
We served over 22,000 people in 2009 through all of our programs- donated goods and workforce
development, as well as our government sites and business enterprises. We placed 1,317 individuals
into jobs at an average wage of $12.28 per hour. Given the tough economy, we made decisions to close
businesses (Logo This, Green Team Landscaping, Medical Adaptive Program) that were not directly aligned
with the operations that work best for Goodwill to consistently deliver on our mission.
Our Goodwill employs 804 associates who work for our mission every day, whether they punch a clock or a
keyboard. We work as retail associates, administrative support, case managers, janitorial workers- all liaisons
for our community- so you can better understand what we do and how we do it. Much of our Goodwill
direct labor force is built on the strength of our disabled associate pool. Our work truly is our mission.
It doesn’t end here. Our future success is based on our ability to be responsive to the communities’ greatest
needs and we accomplish that with your support- whether it is by shopping, donating, hiring Goodwill
graduates, utilizing our services, financial giving, or working for Goodwill. The drive –thru donation center
depicted on the front cover is the gateway to our mission. Your donations make it possible to build more
stores, train more people in today’s job skills, put more people to work, and be the organization that people
associate with doing good.
Thanks for your tremendous support in 2009. Please join us in our endeavor to do good in 2010:
put more people to work with Goodwill.
donate goodwill.
Donated Goods Program - From your closet to our stores
Despite a challenging economic environment, our Donated Goods team produced a series of real
successes in 2009. Armed with the knowledge that our operations need to be updated now to be more
efficient in the recovering environment tomorrow, we made several changes that add to the strength of
our operations and netted even greater contributions to our mission in 2009.
• We closed one store- Southside Plaza- an underperforming retail store in close proximity to better
performing stores.
• We moved one store- Ironbridge- an underachieving retail store that needed more space and
improved merchandising to optimize our presence and more clearly deliver our mission message.
• We added one store- Portsmouth- an underserved region that will greatly benefit from the synergy
of our retail store combined with our community employment center.
• We decentralized our donated goods production to production sites at each store, allowing the
stores to become more self-sufficient in their donation stream and enhance the ability to put fresh
goods on the floor more quickly.
• We reduced trash costs by $120,000 and improved operations to enable us to gain a $750,000
increase in mission funding.
• We established enclave (supported employment) programs at 4 additional sites so we can continue
to exemplify our mission and provide more opportunities for those with obstacles to employment.
And our customers responded:
• Donations topped 916,000 -a 6.2% increase over last year.
• Our average sale per transaction increased to $14.25, compared to $14.15 in 2008.
• Our transactions topped 1,316,000, compared to 1,312,000 in 2008.
• Our market share in Central Virginia stayed strong at 51%, and rose 0.6% in Hampton Roads to 10%.
For 2010, our ability to reach our strategic goal to achieve best in class market penetration and
operational efficiencies will require continuous improvement of business practices for all of our Donated
Goods program units. And it will require the constant dedication to our Donated Goods Program as
much more than a retail store- rather as a great example of our workforce development- providing
individuals with jobs, jobs that make a difference, right here in our communities. With our commitment
to mission, customers will better understand the value of Goodwill and be incented to do good,
whether by donating or shopping…and to repeat.
provide goodwill.
Workforce Development Programs 2009 - Your donations at work
22,819 people served- a 30% increase over 2008.
The numbers speak for themselves. 2009 has been a challenging year for Workforce Development.
We have worked diligently to support the needs of our community- greater in this economy than we
have encountered in the past. Goodwill’s superior service numbers were due to our ability to adapt
our programs to serve not only the disabled and the disadvantaged, but those who found themselves
unemployed this year. From intensive services to career development, our resources were tested.
Through our Community Employment Centers and our One Stop Workforce Centers, combined with our
community partnerships and area employers, our dedicated staff has been able to meet the challenge
and provide the people we serve with solutions to help put them back to work.
The focus for 2010 will be to continue to build the quality of our programs so that the communities that
we serve in Hampton Roads and Central Virginia will continue to look to Goodwill to provide workforce
solutions. To do this successfully in an economy where communities struggle to provide funding for
such programs, we made decisions to curtail our efforts to those best suited to serve our mission
directly. For these reasons, lack of funding support and dilution of our core service focus, we closed our
Medical Adaptive Equipment program in 2009. We will continue to direct our efforts this year to build
better communities with quality job training programs designed to put disadvantaged and disabled
individuals to work.
Business Enterprises - Goodwill’s donation to our mission
The two Business Enterprise units at Goodwill provide
an additional source of funding for our workforce
development programs. These are businesses- both
commercially based and government contracting-
that provide Goodwill with an outlet for our own
entrepreneurial philanthropy. Throughout 2009, it
became clear that not all of these businesses were
able to continue to support our core services and
mission. We made decisions to close LogoThis,
our embroidery and silk screening business, and
the Green Team, our landscaping business. Both
businesses suffered from intense competition in
the marketplace, and diverted valuable resources
from our focus on our core mission.
We continue to develop Goodwill Staffing Solutions,
providing temporary and temp to hire workforce
solutions for employers. GSS has experienced great
success this year resulting in an increase in revenue
of 22% over 2008. As the economy begins its slow
recovery, employers need to hire temporary workers
through the transition phases. This effort fits with our
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle…Go Green with Goodwill
In addition to employing 3 Goodwill associates,
Document Destruction is an NAID certified secured
program that supports our efforts to be a more
“green” organization. Our efforts to recycle more
in 2010 are directly supported by our Document
Destruction business. We partner with our
Goodwill and Dell- A growing green partnership
Don’t Dump, Donate! Our eRecycle partnership with Dell
through the Dell Reconnect program kept 1.5 million
pounds of computer and electronic components out of
our landfills in 2009. And the ability to refurbish a majority
of these donations for sale in our retail stores has been
an added boon to revenues and served as additional fuel
for our mission. The popularity of the program led to the
opening of our Computer Outlet store at 6301 Midlothian
Turnpike last October. The response to this program clearly
indicates the support of green initiatives that Goodwill
receives from our community- Goodwill is good for our
environment, whether our homes, our neighborhoods, or
our cities!
mission of putting people to work and assisting the
community with realistic solutions in unstable times.
In addition, we maintained all of our Ability One
and Government contract sites throughout 2009:
commissary operations at Fort Lee, Fort Eustis and
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; custodial services at the
Federal Courthouse, Robert Merhige U.S. Courthouse,
Lewis F. Powell Courthouse, Defense Supply Center
Richmond and Virginia Department of Game and
Inland Fisheries; and mailroom services at the IRS.
Through these government contracts, we are able
to employ a workforce that is strengthened by our
disabled associates. 79.4% of the direct labor pool
is represented by this exceptional group. Goodwill
Services Incorporated exemplifies our vision of
providing individuals with opportunities to reach
their highest level of self-sufficiency.
community- both residential and corporate- to
securely dispose of documents and recycle the
waste. Document Destruction is both good for
our community and for our environment.
Information Management - Improvements for the future
In 2009, our Information Management team continued to help our organization keep pace with
technology improvements. As improved systems help us to better communicate, organize and
manage data, our Goodwill is better positioned for growth in 2010. Information management
enables our mission messages to be interpreted and received in a multitude of ways- reaching
more customers- both internal and external- more often and more consistently.
• Our Goodwill was one of eighteen in the nation to receive a Microsoft in-kind grant in the amount
of $137,868 to further develop our Microsoft operating platform for the organization.
• Our Goodwill was awarded a $52,000 grant from the Norfolk Foundation to implement online
employment applicant tracking and time and attendance systems to replace the manual,
paper-based systems currently in use.
• Our Goodwill rolled out SharePoint, the new intranet-based content management framework
which we will customize for our organization in 2010 to allow associates to easily locate
information and work collaboratively.
• Our Goodwill established a multi-year partnership with Capital One to provide pro bono
professional services in the areas of process mapping and human resources, designed to
increase efficiencies and enhance the culture of our open workforce environment,
“Collaboration Community.”
• Through a grant from the Hunter Charitable Trust, our Goodwill implemented a high-quality,
point-to-point video and audio conferencing capability between our offices in Richmond
and Hampton Roads. This will enable us to conduct “virtual” training and meetings between
the two geographic sites.
Mary Schlegel - working with a smile
In Mary’s own words:
I have been working for Goodwill Industries for
2 years. I have always wanted to work, and I enjoy
being a help to others in any way that I can. I love
animals, and I enjoy being a caretaker. My nickname
here at Goodwill is “Mother Mary” and I take pride
in that name. I started at Goodwill as a mail handler.
I moved on to work on the Horticultural Program
here at the Goodwill. I tried a variety of tasks for
the last two years, and Goodwill staff consistently
worked with me to help me find the type of job
I would enjoy and complete with accuracy and
speed. I struggled with many tasks due to my
developmental disability; however, I remained
determined, and I continued to be open to trying
new skills building activities. In July of 2009,
I moved on to textiles and production at Goodwill.
I am now performing exceptionally well with
hanging clothes in textiles. Whenever you see me,
you will see me with a smile. I enjoy working now
in textiles, and I am one of the top hangers.
Goodwill opened
testimonial of goodwill
Lilton Sykes, Jr. and Hasan Zarif -
the circle of support
In October 2009, Lilton Sykes visited our employment
center. He had just been released from the
Department of Corrections, and had heard about
the job seeking services at Goodwill. He had a
one-on-one orientation about services and began
to use our resource room. Lilton attended the Re-
Entry workshop where he took to heart their advice.
One piece especially spoke to him - the advice to
be professional in appearance as he looked for a
job. He met with Hasan Zarif, Goodwill’s Re-Entry
program manager to obtain a suit, 2 ties, shoes and
a belt. Hasan knew better than anyone about Lilton’s
situation. Twenty years ago, Hasan was released from
prison under similar circumstances. Hasan has done
so much more than just starting over since Goodwill
opened the door for him. He has spent his career
giving back to our community through his service
as Goodwill Re-Entry Coordinator and minister in
Chaplain Services. Hasan is such a role model for
our community that he received a simple pardon
from Governor Kaine in 2009. A shining example
of overcoming obstacles, Hasan is well qualified,
personally and professionally, to help Lilton, and
others like him, find their place in this world.
Lilton, prepared now to look the part, began to
actively seek a job. Within the month, he was offered
a part time position at a local restaurant. Although he
needed full time work, he remembered the advice
from our program to get his foot in the door, so he
did…he accepted the position. While working part
time, he noticed that there were some tasks at his
job that the employer struggled to complete due
to the odd time of day that the tasks needed to be
done. Lilton volunteered to take on these tasks to
make the business more efficient. Consequently, the
employer compiled the tasks, along with his original
responsibilities, and Lilton now has a full time job!
Lilton oftens says, “My comfort came from Mr. Zarif
and Goodwill”.
Goodwill doesn’t
see obstacles,
only opportunities.
Joseph Lyons - a journey worth taking
In Joseph’s own words:
My journey towards employment started in high
school. Due to my learning disability, I felt I should
learn some new trades. I was referred to Goodwill
by an agency and my journey to find out what I
may enjoy started. I started off with a variety of
jobs. I started with the Horticultural Program doing
landscaping here at Goodwill. I then went on to
ask my supervisor about other opportunities here
at Goodwill. I was finally linked to the janitorial
department. I enjoyed this tremendously, but I had a
few bumps along the way. My job coach continued
to stay on me about the specifics to the janitorial
tasks and being a successful, hardworking employee.
As I continued to grow and get better about my
work ethics, I was transferred to work for the IRS
federal building in Richmond. I am happy with
my current position and grateful that my disability
did not stop me from achieving my goals. My
supervisors at Goodwill have given me great tools
and skills to take with me anywhere that I may be
employed in the future. I am grateful for that.
The mission of
Goodwill spreads
quickly… as those
who have learned to
overcome will teach
others to succeed.
An individual can become a member
of the Founder’s Circle by pledging
Bequests
If you are drafting or revising a
will, consider naming Goodwill
Industries as a beneficiary of your
estate. This is a meaningful way to
continue your legacy of supporting
quality employment services to the
disabled and disadvantaged in our
community.
Honorary and Memorial Gifts
What better way to salute friends,
family, and loved ones than by
making a donation in their honor
or memory. A Goodwill associate
will gladly notify the honoree of
your generosity.
