Letter from the President & CEO and the Chair of the Board It all begins here. With a pair of tennis shoes, a book, a microwave, or even a computer, lives begin to change. In 2009, 916,971 donations helped fund the job training and skills building services for 22,819 individuals throughout Central Virginia and Hampton Roads. There are many steps in between the donor’s closet and the individual’s success in the workforce, but it is the sheer volume of your donations that becomes the power behind our work. At Goodwill, we look to our partner, our community, to succeed on our mission every day. And we thank you for our successes in 2009. Our job is to make the most from these donations. In 2009, we closed one store- Southside Plaza; moved one store- Ironbridge; and opened one store- Portsmouth. We effectively decentralized production efforts to become more self-sufficient. We improved operations at outlets, auctions, and all retail locations. We reduced trash costs and increased our contributions to our mission. We made changes in 2009 so we can work smarter in 2010… 2010 is the beginning of a focused effort to grow our Donated Goods Program. By building our Donated Goods Program- our stores, donation centers, and retail workforce- we continue to create workplace opportunities and advance our mission in all the communities that we serve. We served over 22,000 people in 2009 through all of our programs- donated goods and workforce development, as well as our government sites and business enterprises. We placed 1,317 individuals into jobs at an average wage of $12.28 per hour. Given the tough economy, we made decisions to close businesses (Logo This, Green Team Landscaping, Medical Adaptive Program) that were not directly aligned with the operations that work best for Goodwill to consistently deliver on our mission. Our Goodwill employs 804 associates who work for our mission every day, whether they punch a clock or a keyboard. We work as retail associates, administrative support, case managers, janitorial workers- all liaisons for our community- so you can better understand what we do and how we do it. Much of our Goodwill direct labor force is built on the strength of our disabled associate pool. Our work truly is our mission. It doesn’t end here. Our future success is based on our ability to be responsive to the communities’ greatest needs and we accomplish that with your support- whether it is by shopping, donating, hiring Goodwill graduates, utilizing our services, financial giving, or working for Goodwill. The drive –thru donation center depicted on the front cover is the gateway to our mission. Your donations make it possible to build more stores, train more people in today’s job skills, put more people to work, and be the organization that people associate with doing good.
