communicate goodwill. Information Management - Improvements for the future In 2009, our Information Management team continued to help our organization keep pace with technology improvements. As improved systems help us to better communicate, organize and manage data, our Goodwill is better positioned for growth in 2010. Information management enables our mission messages to be interpreted and received in a multitude of ways- reaching more customers- both internal and external- more often and more consistently. • Our Goodwill was one of eighteen in the nation to receive a Microsoft in-kind grant in the amount of $137,868 to further develop our Microsoft operating platform for the organization. • Our Goodwill was awarded a $52,000 grant from the Norfolk Foundation to implement online employment applicant tracking and time and attendance systems to replace the manual, paper-based systems currently in use. • Our Goodwill rolled out SharePoint, the new intranet-based content management framework which we will customize for our organization in 2010 to allow associates to easily locate information and work collaboratively. • Our Goodwill established a multi-year partnership with Capital One to provide pro bono professional services in the areas of process mapping and human resources, designed to increase efficiencies and enhance the culture of our open workforce environment, “Collaboration Community.” • Through a grant from the Hunter Charitable Trust, our Goodwill implemented a high-quality, point-to-point video and audio conferencing capability between our offices in Richmond and Hampton Roads. This will enable us to conduct “virtual” training and meetings between the two geographic sites. 8 Goodwill Industries
testimonial of goodwill Mary Schlegel - working with a smile In Mary’s own words: I have been working for Goodwill Industries for 2 years. I have always wanted to work, and I enjoy being a help to others in any way that I can. I love animals, and I enjoy being a caretaker. My nickname here at Goodwill is “Mother Mary” and I take pride in that name. I started at Goodwill as a mail handler. I moved on to work on the Horticultural Program here at the Goodwill. I tried a variety of tasks for the last two years, and Goodwill staff consistently worked with me to help me find the type of job I would enjoy and complete with accuracy and speed. I struggled with many tasks due to my developmental disability; however, I remained determined, and I continued to be open to trying new skills building activities. In July of 2009, I moved on to textiles and production at Goodwill. I am now performing exceptionally well with hanging clothes in textiles. Whenever you see me, you will see me with a smile.
