donate goodwill. Donated Goods Program - From your closet to our stores Despite a challenging economic environment, our Donated Goods team produced a series of real successes in 2009. Armed with the knowledge that our operations need to be updated now to be more efficient in the recovering environment tomorrow, we made several changes that add to the strength of our operations and netted even greater contributions to our mission in 2009. • We closed one store- Southside Plaza- an underperforming retail store in close proximity to better performing stores. • We moved one store- Ironbridge- an underachieving retail store that needed more space and improved merchandising to optimize our presence and more clearly deliver our mission message. • We added one store- Portsmouth- an underserved region that will greatly benefit from the synergy of our retail store combined with our community employment center. • We decentralized our donated goods production to production sites at each store, allowing the stores to become more self-sufficient in their donation stream and enhance the ability to put fresh goods on the floor more quickly. • We reduced trash costs by $120,000 and improved operations to enable us to gain a $750,000 increase in mission funding. • We established enclave (supported employment) programs at 4 additional sites so we can continue to exemplify our mission and provide more opportunities for those with obstacles to employment. And our customers responded: • Donations topped 916,000 -a 6.2% increase over last year. • Our average sale per transaction increased to $14.25, compared to $14.15 in 2008. • Our transactions topped 1,316,000, compared to 1,312,000 in 2008. • Our market share in Central Virginia stayed strong at 51%, and rose 0.6% in Hampton Roads to 10%. For 2010, our ability to reach our strategic goal to achieve best in class market penetration and operational efficiencies will require continuous improvement of business practices for all of our Donated Goods program units. And it will require the constant dedication to our Donated Goods Program as much more than a retail store- rather as a great example of our workforce development- providing individuals with jobs, jobs that make a difference, right here in our communities. With our commitment to mission, customers will better understand the value of Goodwill and be incented to do good, whether by donating or shopping…and to repeat. 4 Goodwill Industries
provide goodwill. Workforce Development Programs 2009 - Your donations at work 22,819 people served- a 30% increase over 2008. The numbers speak for themselves. 2009 has been a challenging year for Workforce Development. We have worked diligently to support the needs of our community- greater in this economy than we have encountered in the past. Goodwill’s superior service numbers were due to our ability to adapt our programs to serve not only the disabled and the disadvantaged, but those who found themselves unemployed this year. From intensive services to career development, our resources were tested. Through our Community Employment Centers and our One Stop Workforce Centers, combined with our community partnerships and area employers, our dedicated staff has been able to meet the challenge and provide the people we serve with solutions to help put them back to work. The focus for 2010 will be to continue to build the quality of our programs so that the communities that we serve in Hampton Roads and Central Virginia will continue to look to Goodwill to provide workforce solutions. To do this successfully in an economy where communities struggle to provide funding for such programs, we made decisions to curtail our efforts to those best suited to serve our mission directly. For these reasons, lack of funding support and dilution of our core service focus, we closed our Medical Adaptive Equipment program in 2009. We will continue to direct our efforts this year to build better communities with quality job training programs designed to put disadvantaged and disabled individuals to work. annual report | 09 5
