Business Enterprises - Goodwill’s donation to our mission
The two Business Enterprise units at Goodwill provide
an additional source of funding for our workforce
development programs. These are businesses- both
commercially based and government contracting-
that provide Goodwill with an outlet for our own
entrepreneurial philanthropy. Throughout 2009, it
became clear that not all of these businesses were
able to continue to support our core services and
mission. We made decisions to close LogoThis,
our embroidery and silk screening business, and
the Green Team, our landscaping business. Both
businesses suffered from intense competition in
the marketplace, and diverted valuable resources
from our focus on our core mission.
We continue to develop Goodwill Staffing Solutions,
providing temporary and temp to hire workforce
solutions for employers. GSS has experienced great
success this year resulting in an increase in revenue
of 22% over 2008. As the economy begins its slow
recovery, employers need to hire temporary workers
through the transition phases. This effort fits with our
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle…Go Green with Goodwill
In addition to employing 3 Goodwill associates,
Document Destruction is an NAID certified secured
program that supports our efforts to be a more
“green” organization. Our efforts to recycle more
in 2010 are directly supported by our Document
Destruction business. We partner with our
Goodwill and Dell- A growing green partnership
Don’t Dump, Donate! Our eRecycle partnership with Dell
through the Dell Reconnect program kept 1.5 million
pounds of computer and electronic components out of
our landfills in 2009. And the ability to refurbish a majority
of these donations for sale in our retail stores has been
an added boon to revenues and served as additional fuel
for our mission. The popularity of the program led to the
opening of our Computer Outlet store at 6301 Midlothian
Turnpike last October. The response to this program clearly
indicates the support of green initiatives that Goodwill
receives from our community- Goodwill is good for our
environment, whether our homes, our neighborhoods, or
our cities!

In addition, we maintained all of our Ability One
and Government contract sites throughout 2009:
commissary operations at Fort Lee, Fort Eustis and
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; custodial services at the
Federal Courthouse, Robert Merhige U.S. Courthouse,
Lewis F. Powell Courthouse, Defense Supply Center
Richmond and Virginia Department of Game and
Inland Fisheries; and mailroom services at the IRS.
Through these government contracts, we are able
to employ a workforce that is strengthened by our
disabled associates. 79.4% of the direct labor pool
is represented by this exceptional group. Goodwill
Services Incorporated exemplifies our vision of
providing individuals with opportunities to reach
their highest level of self-sufficiency.
