Blossom out in healthy nature
The nature`s paradise begins already in town. The idyllic Wöhrsee at the
foot of the castle is nature reserve and leisure time-El Dorado with swimming
area, boat hire, crazy golf course, nature trail and hiking trails.
Hikers with bicycles are welcome in Burghausen. The "cycle rally" leads -
in front of the background of the Alps - through a pittoresque river-,
lake- and hilly country of the Inn-Salzach region. Cycleways of Inn- and
Danube valley and of a part of the Alps, the Tauern, bring the cyclists to
further more distant destinations.
Beside the athletic pleasure a varied
recreational offer fills days and
evenings: Events, museums, shopping-
or dinner-delights, partys and
festivals. The new production of the
"Helmbrechtspiele" and the great
historical castle festival set gleamlights
in old tradition. A single highlight
"blooms" 2004, when the
"Landesgartenschau" changes Burghausen
in a garden without limits.

Walls as far as the eye can see
Endless the walls, battlements, towers and chapels of the longest castle of
Europe (1.051 metres) strezch along the small ridge. From above your
eyes fall on the old part of the city with its magnificent row of houses and
southern looking lanes; on the other side the romantic Wöhrsee (= lake).
A picturesque scenery - framed by the river Salzach and the foothills of
the Alps rich in forests.
The castle: Witness of a more than thousand-year-old history centre of the
daily life. In it there are museums and exhibitions, develop artist-groups
their creative abilities, live and celebrate the citizens of Burghausen.
Culture and soul find a resting place there and spectables and festivals a
dreamlike setting.
A unique nature event offers a boat trip on the plätte, a flat barque (rowing
boat) formerly used to transport the salt on the river. The flat boat moves
along downstream through the natural Salzach-valley leisurely, it gives you
time for romance and get-together about 90 minutes.
Who prefers to enjoy the landscape from the bird`s eye view, makes a
balloon trip. Who wants to keep in form, plays tennis, football or golf ball,
frequents one of the three swimming baths or rides, trains, fishes, goes
bowling, and so on...
Leisure time that is joking fun
The short footpath leads from the medieval walls of the castle down to the
meridionally buoyant lanes and to the feudal city-centre. Richly coloured
gabled houses with facades in Renaisannce, Baroque and Rococo form a
guard of honor. Heilig Heist-Spitalkirche (=hospital church of Holy Spirit),
Mautnerschloss (= palatial building of toll gate), Rathaus (= town hall)
Stadtsallgebäude (= building with town hall) and Tauffkirchen-Palais (mansion
of a noble family) as well as the famous assembly hall in Baroque style
of the Kurfürst-Maximilian-Gymnasium (= electoral grammar school) set
highlights in this “passable stylistic picturebook of the medieval centre”.
Dreams in the meridional light
The glittering river, the old part of
the town with its roofs hided
behind erected facades and above
them the proud castle form a triad
uniquely closed and strangely
beautyful presents itself like a
fairy-tale.
The “Grüben”, formerly lane of the
workmen, today “Street of Fame”
which invites to go for a walk, to
have a look round the shops and to
relax in small sidewalk cafés.

For senses and soul
From the hill Marienberg greets the pilgrimage church of the “Assumption
of the blessed Virgin”. This “perl of Salzach-valley” ranks among the
most beautyful Bavarian churches in Rococo-style.
Downwards in Raitenhaslach you find the next jewel - the more than
800 years old monastery church of the Cistercian monks with a Romanesque
core and a breathtaking Baroque-Rococo-interior. Also the late
Gothic lepers church Heilig Kreuz (= holy crucifix) with its very detailed
shapeliness is a popular place for outings.

fame with its B`Jazz-Week.
An enthusiastic audience swings
during the festival jazz-night and
in the popular jazz-basements.
As a proof of the love there are
bronze plates of famous jazz musicians

Burghausen impresses everybody with works of art in a unique landscape
scenery, with a strong nature and cultural animation; there is nothing like it.
Historic art treasures can be admired in the museums on the castle, but
culture is also living at any moment in Burghausen: modern architecture is
combined with epoch-making buildings, young artists develop their recent
ideas. Customs, folklore, traditional festivities and festivals find their
audience as well as stages of theatre, revue and cabaret, halls of concerts or
cinemas.
