2 from thePrincipal dear alumni and Friends of St. Raymond, Welcome to the annual fall edition of the RaVEN. the school community is excited to welcome 219 freshmen and their parents into the Class of 2014. this class comprises students from the Bronx, manhattan and Westchester County from 87 elementary schools. So, the future of our school is bright indeed. the school is celebrating a “Year of Kindness” as our special theme. the students are working on various ways to incorporate their community service projects into this theme. they have had two excellent assembly programs on respect and kindness. We are also excited with many academic achievements and developments. the music department has expanded with additional elective courses, including a school chorus. our seniors from last year once again won the NyC Stock market Game over all high schools, public and private, in New york City. the school added forensics to its science curriculum as an elective for seniors. We are also on track this year for 100% of our senior class to obtain NyS Regents and/or advanced Regents diplomas. the fall season has produced some notable sporting accomplishments as well. Both our JV and Varsity baseball teams won their respective fall tournaments. our cross country team produced ten medal winners. our soccer team won their division and is eager to move forward into the playoffs and the bowling team is currently offering strong competition. additionally, our intramural football and ping pong programs are up and running. all of this excellent programming will find a fine new home in the building addition that is scheduled to open in September 2011. the additional space and technology will continue to make St. Raymond high School for Boys one of the leading Catholic, Lasallian schools in the archdiocese of New york. thank you for the support that you have given both in presence and donations. SCHOOLnews St. Raymond and the “Year of Kindness” — 2010-2011 the power of kindness The Unexpected Benefits of Leading a Compassionate Life by Piero Ferrucci the theme for this year was inspired by the book by Piero Ferrucci, The Power of Kindness: The Unexpected Benefits of Leading a Compassionate Life. Ferrucci notes that “being kind is a way of life that can bring happiness to others as well as to those who practice it.” Ms. Christine Schmidt and sophomore Alberto Salsedo suggested this theme and the students and faculty have jumped in feet first demonstrating kindness here at St. Raymond and will continue to do so well into 2011. the theme for the last school year was “year of Sprit” and “year of Service” prior to that. to support this theme, Mr. John Musto, assistant Principal for Student affairs, helped to organize an assembly for juniors and seniors, along with Chuk Obasi ‘01, to perform “Under the Veil” on october 4. the program highlights being muslim (and non-muslim) in america, and integrates a post 9/11 cutting-edge, insight to conflict resolution with interactive, documentary- Lasallian Educators Of the Year by Mr. Rick Duncan ‘68, Lasallian Coordinator style theatre. it brings to the stage the everyday clash of cares and threats that divide americans from each other. it also functions dramatically to foster the curiosity, insight, and compassion audience members need to understand and transcend those barriers. Mr. Gregory Scott ‘72 organized an abstinence program for sophomores, juniors and seniors on october 27 that educates youth to aspire to the best sexual health. “Sex, Love, and Choices” is a national assembly program that combines facts, skits and entertainment to address the Church’s teachings on abstinence. the program uses “the concept of abstinence to teach practical methods that will enable students to reject sexual advances and other risky behaviors, thus allowing them to focus on what matters most, preparing for their future.” one of the more difficult decisions made each year at St. Raymond high School for Boys is the one that determines the distinguished Lasallian Educator of the year. this year proved no different, and in some ways more difficult. at our school there are so many qualified and deserving educators who exemplify the requirements necessary to receive this most prestigious award. in order to receive this award, an educator must be a minister at St. Raymond for at least five years, the recipient must work in association with the school community to foster gospel values in the lives of students and staff and the recipient must see the Lasallian School as a place of educational excellence, Br. Richard Galvin, FSC Mr. Robert Heckmann which shares in the teaching mission of the Catholic Church. this award is the most notable award that the school can bestow upon a faculty member. this award is presented by the Regional Board of Education of the Christian Brothers in the name of all Lasallians. this year, and after some discussion, the award is presented to two most deserving recipients, Br. Richard Galvin, FSC ‘82 and Mr. Robert Heckmann. Both of these individuals reflect the criteria as outlined above and are truly respected by both students and their peers alike. they have dedicated themselves to the mission of St. Raymond in a most unselfish manner over their many years at St. Raymond. they are educators who have “touched the hearts of their students” and have been role models for their colleagues by their dedication and exemplary behavior and attitude. Br. Richard and mr. heckmann are known throughout the school community as tireless volunteers at all our school’s events. they are accessible and accommodating to their students both in and out of the classroom. they are individuals who are worthy of receiving this most prestigious award. the faculty, staff, administration and students thank them for all that they have done for our school community. Current faculty members who have received the Lasallian Educator of the year award are mr. michael mcCauley (1989), mr. Ron Patnosh (1994), mrs. Phyllis Sobieralski (1998), mrs. Evelyn Cabuhat (2000), ms. Edita Chico (2001), mrs. Judith Carew (2002), mr. James Winkle ‘82 (2005), mr. Rick duncan ‘68 (2006), mr. Chris Corvi ‘90 (2007), mrs. adoracion macalintal (2008) and mr.
