from
theParish Pastor
Dear Alums & friends of St. Raymond High School for Boys,
Happy New Year! We were delighted to welcome 198 new Ravens
to the Class of 2013—lined up two by two, school uniforms
and, of course, neatly shaved—for opening day, September 9. It
is always impressive to watch these young boys enter the school
as freshmen knowing that four years later they will leave as welleducated
Christian gentlemen.
We celebrated the Mass of the Holy Spirit on Friday, September
18—the freshmen were in the Lower Church for Mass with Father
William Brogan; I celebrated the Mass with the upperclassmen in
the Main Church. Both celebrations were prayerful and filled with
a spirit of enthusiasm.
At the end of the Mass in the Main Church I asked the senior class
to stand and face the sophomores and juniors —and join me in
the final blessing. I emphasized that they, the seniors, were the
leaders, the role models and the big brothers —and that they had
a responsibility not only to themselves but to the school community.
The seniors participated with a seriousness that was quite
impressive, and we were off to a great start!
You are reading so much good news in this newsletter and I think
you will be very proud of what is happening here—in academics,
in sports, in volunteer service, in school clubs and groups. We are
a 24/7 school. Please note the information and tentative plans for
our Golden Anniversary —hard to believe that we are 50 years
old with so much history and so many wonderful accomplishments.
We will be celebrating for at least a year with Masses, dinners,
family events and sports competitions—just to name a few
events to look forward to. Join us and be part of the celebration.
Once again, thank you for your support and your prayers. We are
very much alive and well. Live Jesus in our hearts forever! St. John
Baptist de La Salle, pray for us!
Sincerely,
Monsignor John Graham
Dear Alumni and Friends,
Greetings from St. Raymond High School for Boys! We are excited to begin our
new year with the theme of ‘School Spirit.’ Many activities are planned for the
students throughout the year that will show Raven Pride. These activities will also
lead us into the 50th Anniversary year of our school. A committee of alumni,
parents and friends are developing many activities to celebrate this milestone.
Hopefully you will be able to join us at these special events.
You will read about many of the happenings in our school community in this edition
of the RAVEN. Mrs. Judi Carew and the teachers are to be commended for our
excellent Advanced Placement achievements. These achievements continue to
make our school one of the most sought after Catholic educations in the Bronx.
I recently asked one of the freshmen how his transition to a new school was going.
He replied that St. Ray’s was great. I asked him why it was so great, and he told
me that the school was just like a family. That spirit of family is what makes the
St. Raymond community so unique. It is in this family context that our students
develop their faith, their academic skills, and the self-discipline that will last them
a lifetime. I invite you to be a part of that with your prayers and support.
God bless,
AP Scholars CLaSS Of 2009
St. Raymond is proud to recognize three
members of the Class of 2009 who have
earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition
of their exceptional achievement on the
AP (Advanced Placement) Exams.
Juan Infante ‘09, who is attending Carnegie
Mellon University, was awarded the
AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning
an average of at least 3.25 on all AP exams
taken, and grades of three or higher
on four or more AP exams. Fabian Rentas
‘09 and Luis Vasquez-Diaz ‘09 qualified
for the AP Scholar award by completing
Focusing on Sat imprOvement
the first step: vocabulary
three or more AP exams with grades of
three or higher.
The College Board’s Advanced Placement
Program (AP) provides motivated and
academically prepared students with the
opportunity to take rigorous college-level
courses while still in high school, and to
earn college credit, advanced placement,
or both for successful performance on the
AP exams. About 18 percent of the 1.6
million students worldwide who took AP
exams earned an AP Scholar Award. Congratulations
to Juan, Fabian and Luis.
To continue its focus on preparing students for the SAT, St. Raymond has instituted the
instruction of vocabulary across the curriculum. Although English classes have always
taught vocabulary, all departments, including homerooms, will now be involved in a
more specific and focused manner in the instruction of vocabulary.
Understanding vocabulary plays an important role in comprehension. Research shows
that vocabulary instruction, when taught in each subject area in every grade, provides
an excellent opportunity for students to acquire the knowledge they need to understand
the subject area content more fully.
The English department has chosen 200 of the most commonly used SAT words that
will be stressed. Each academic cycle, teachers will receive a list of vocabulary words,
along with definitions and parts of speech. Throughout the academic cycle, each teacher
in each department will teach (using a variety of strategies most applicable to each
subject area), use and test the words within their own content area.
AP Challenge:
rewarding achievement
Since 2007, St. Raymond has participated
in the REACH Scholarship Challenge—
with remarkable results.
REACH strives to “help high achieving students
succeed academically in high school,
go to good colleges, and earn four year
college degrees.” To do this, REACH gives
financial awards of $300 to $1,000 to students
who earn passing scores (3,4 or 5) on
Advanced Placement (AP) exams.
To help them earn those passing scores,
REACH provides free workshops and re-
sources for students and professional development
for teachers.
St. Raymond has been commended by
REACH for its strong performance in the
program. Since 2007, St. Raymond has increased
its number of students passing AP
exams 667%—compared to a 16% increase
in other participating Bronx schools.
REACH is a program of The Council
of Urban Professionals and The Pershing
Square Foundation. 31 schools in New
York City (11 in the Bronx) participate.
Three St. Raymond students participated
in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Summer Enrichment Program this past
summer.
For six weeks during July and August, William
and Joshua Obeng ‘11 spent four days a
week shadowing medical professionals.
According to Nilda Soto, the assistant
dean for diversity enhancement at the Albert
Einstein School of Medicine, “The sum-
mer Enrichment Program, begun in 1988,
allows high school age students throughout
the Bronx with an interest in medicine,
science or health care the opportunity to
learn about careers in those fields, while
meeting with and shadowing professionals
and strengthening their study skills and
habits in a supportive, interactive environment.”
During the program — Mondays through
Thursdays — students attend classes and
Welcome new faCuLty Ms. Justine Davies, Earth Science and Chemistry.
Ms. Davies, originally from the Pelham section of the
Bronx, is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and the
College of Notre Dame in Maryland. She comes to St. Raymond
from Seton Keough High School in Baltimore where
she taught Biology, Physical Science and Marine Biology.
She also coached track and cross-country. Ms. Davies was
Mr. Padron, born and raised in Venezuela, comes to St.
Raymond after eight years as a music teacher in Rockaway
Park, New York. Before moving to the United States
in 1997, he traveled to several countries with the choir of
receive counseling about careers in science
and medicine in the morning and at
the office of a doctor or health care professional
in the afternoon. This program offers
a special opportunity for students to get a
‘hands on’ experience in research labs,
clinical hospital settings and private practices.
It is an inside view—one that many
do not often see of the medical field with
unlimited resources. It is also an opportunity
that allows students with a common
interest to interact and learn from one another.
Soto adds that “when students think about
what they would like to do for their careers,
this program makes them aware of the
many options that exist for them, limited
only by their desire to pursue them.”
At the end of the summer program, each
student gives an oral presentation about
their experience to all the participants.
The annual Olympic Day was held on Friday, September 25.
It is held each year as a way to welcome freshmen into the
RAVEN family.
Homerooms compete in numerous events including races
(sneaker, dizzy izzy), field events, egg toss contests and basketball.
This year, homeroom 201 were the champions scoring
27 points—edging out homeroom 307 in the 400 meter
relay won by freshmen Robert Abad, Michael Brugman,
Erickson Bueno and Jacquan
Brown. The
day, as always, was
THE DOLLARS & CANS COLLECTION
Last November, St. Raymond held its annual Thanksgiving food
drive. Students and faculty donated non-perishable food items
to support Mercy Center’s food pantry. Five boxes of food items
were collected and delivered. Additionally this past year, the
community donated more than nine hundred dollars to support
the school’s twin school in Africa, St. Mary’s (also a Christian
Brothers school) in Nyeri, Kenya. The dollars collected help subsidize
the cost of educating students at St. Mary’s.
TOyS FOR TOTS
Each December, each student homeroom collects money to
purchase two toys for needy children—a boy and a girl. After the
drive last December, over 70 toys were delivered to Highbridge
Community Life Center in the south Bronx during a Christmas
party for students in the after care program. The party included
distributing the toys, pizza and a special visit from Santa.
spring, in its fourth year of participation,
the school raised over seventeen hundred
dollars during a three week period. Each
morning in homerooms, students were encouraged
to donate their spare change.
Retreats
Students at St. Raymond participate in retreats each year.
SENIORS attend an overnight retreat at the Capuchin Youth
and Family Ministries retreat house in Garrison, New York. It is
the perfect setting for the retreat which provides an opportunity
for seniors to focus on God in their lives—God in my past, present
and future. There are four senior retreats throughout the
year to allow for all seniors to participate. Students participate
St. Anthony’s
SOPHOMORES take part in a service retreat at St. Patrick’s
Home for the Aged and Infirmed. In groups of 15, sophomores
spend the day learning about ministering to and working with
the elderly by listening and doing. Students attend a morning
Mass with the residents, an orientation, and then are assigned
to an area for service. Usually students assist recreation coordinators
with activities, transport and accompany residents to
physical/occupational therapy sessions or simply spend time
talking or walking with a resident of St. Patrick’s.
JuNIOR AND FRESHMEN retreats are held at St. Raymond;
they begin with a class Mass and then students participate in a
program presented by Tony Bellizzi, a well known youth minister.
and SaCramentS
br. andrew O’gara, f.S.C. Legacy Society
“I’m confident that with your support this fine school will continue to thrive.”
—Br. Andrew O’Gara, FSC
In 2006 St. Raymond High School for Boys created, in honor of a true leader and man
of significance in St. Raymond High School for Boys’ history, an endowment scholarship
fund in honor of Brother Andrew O’Gara, FSC.
Commitment and strength are words synonymous with Brother Andrew. Upon his
name and legacy the school is building and further ensuring its ability to serve the
young men who pass through the halls. Brother Andrew died in November, 2008 at
the age of 80—but his legacy lives on.
St. Raymond is committed to strengthening the school by accepting the strongest
students without regard for their ability to pay the full tuition, ensuring that a St. Raymond
education remains affordable, enriching the school community by reaching out
to the diverse population of New York City.
You can become a member of this society through direct cash gifts, or you can make
a Planned Gift to St. Raymond High School for Boys.
“Clearly Brother Andrew is the rock upon which St. Raymond is built and he will always
be the spirit behind its future success...let’s say a prayer for him and sing ‘in our
hearts’ the school song one more time for Brother Andrew.” (Angelo DiPierro ‘77)
Alumni Highlights!
Hero of the Month Daily News
by Patrice O’Shaughnessy • Daily News
After three decades in the Fire Department,
Lt. kevin Flanagan ‘71 has the
courage and dedication you’d expect
from a veteran. He also has the enthusiasm
of a rookie.
On January 18, 2009, he crawled toward
flames without the
protection of a fire
hose to rescue an
elderly woman
from her burning
apartment, where
she lay unconscious
amid black
smoke. It was the
second time in
about three years
he saved a life. “It
is really satisfying,
when you make a
difference in somebody’s
life,” Flanagan
said. “But the
whole thing is satisfying.”
For his quick action in the fire and his
long commitment to the city Flanagan, 55,
is the Daily News Hero of the Month
(March 2009).
“I found her, but
the other guys were
there with me...
administering first
aid. It was a team
effort.”
“Lt. Flanagan has served this department
for over 30 years. “Throughout his career he
has served with valor and bravery,” said Fire
Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta. “He truly
represents the best of the city’s bravest.”
At 6:25 am on January 18, Ladder 28 responded
to 140 Brad-
hurst Avenue, where
Kevin Flanagan ‘71
there was a fire on the
fourth floor.
“When we pulled up, I
saw smoke, but I wasn’t
sure if it was steam, because
it was so cold out.”
Flanagan said.
“There was no visible
fire. When I got to the
fourth floor a man said a
lady was screaming in
Apt. 4-K. The door was
locked so we forced it
open. When we opened
the door a little, the
smoke was rolling out,
and the door was hot, so I knew there was
fire inside.”
“I crawled ten feet in. She was on the floor
on her back,” Flanagan said. “I only had half
the width of the hallway, because there was a
chest, and clutter.”
The victim was lying between the chest
and the wall. “I tried to turn her by the shoulder;
I had to drag her a little by her legs and
then turn her around,” Flanagan said.
“She was not responsive at all. There was
very heavy smoke and she was breathing it.
The windows hadn’t failed, so all the smoke
was still in there. The studio was on fire; it was
coming toward us.” It was mostly smoke,
confusion and darkness. Another firefighter
used his water can to hold back the fire
long enough for Flanagan to grab hold of
the victim and get her out of the room.
“I heard she was conscious by the time
they got her into the ambulance,” Flanagan
said. “That was a good sign.”
Then the whole room ended up going up
in flames before the fire was able to be extinguished.
The victim spent 20 days in the hospital,
then went to a rehabilitation center.
“I found her, but the other guys were there
with me, stretching a line, administering first
aid,” Flanagan said of his rescue. “It was a
team effort.
Flanagan grew up in the Bronx, the son
and grandson of city firemen. His two sons
are the fourth generation of Flanagans in the
FDNY. He has spent his career in the Bronx
and Harlem, and has been at Ladder 28 on
W. 143rd Street for 12 years watching the
great change in the neighborhood.
“There are almost no vacant buildings. We
have less structural fires. I see a comeback in
the neighborhood, that’s for sure,” he said.
“We’re still busy. In January, we had 425 runs,
and in February just under 300; it’s a short
month.”
Flanagan was awarded a department
medal in 2005 for a rescue that mirrors this
latest rescue. On a steamy summer morning,
his company responded to an apartment fire
in a 30 story building on W. 155th Street.
Residents told firefighters a boy was still inside.
Without the hose from the street below,
Flanagan crawled into the three bedroom
apartment, with another firefighter containing
the fire in the living room with a water
can. Flanagan found the ten year old boy in
back bedroom and got him out.
“He was revived. The fact that he made it
was good,” said the lieutenant. “At the time,
I didn’t think too much about it, but my wife
said, “You saved that little boy’s life.”
Flanagan has no plans to retire anytime
soon. “I really enjoy it,” he said. “I’m blessed
to have this job.”
