HISTORY
Lawrence School had its origins in the late sixties and was initiated by parents who were determined
to find an educational alternative for their children with reading difficulties. Original inspiration
came from the methods and philosophy of Dr. Kenneth Oldman, who was on the faculty of Case
Western Reserve University. In 1974, the school was incorporated as the Oldman Transitional School.
In 1980, following Dr. Oldman's retirement, the school name was changed to The Transitional School.
Seeking a consistent curriculum and teaching approach, the school's supporters evaluated the
methods used by The dePaul School in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1982, the Board of Trustees authorized
affiliation with the dePaul Society and the adoption of its curriculum and teaching methodology. The
school's charge was redefined to focus on bright students with learning disabilities. In 1984, the
School was renamed the dePaul School of Northeast Ohio.
In 1987, the trustees determined to find a permanent home for the school. After careful study, the
former Wallings Road Elementary School was purchased and extensively renovated to become the
permanent home of the school.
In 1991, the school was notified that The dePaul Society was disbanding. At that time, the school
began extensive study and revision of its curriculum to guarantee the finest available education to its
students.
In 1993, the trustees of the school, acknowledging our independence from The dePaul Society and the
permanence of our school in Northeast Ohio, decided to permanently adopt the name Lawrence
School in honor of a major benefactor.
4

In June 2001, after over a year of study, the Board of Trustees voted to expand the services of the
school through high school. A ninth grade class entered the school that August, and the school added
an additional grade annually; our first graduation took place in the spring of 2005.
After a search of more than two years, the school purchased a 47-acre parcel in Sagamore Hills to
house the new Upper School. During the summer of 2002, an eight classroom addition was added to
the Wallings Road campus to accommodate the needs of the high school students while the new
campus was being built. The Upper School campus opened its doors in January of 2007.
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of Lawrence School is to teach students who have distinct learning styles, ignite their
potential, and inspire academic and social success.
PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
Lawrence School is a private, independent day school that serves students with language-based
learning differences and/or attention deficit disorders. We strive for excellence in our delivery of
service to our students and their families in both academic and social areas. Our goal is to remediate
academic problems and help students grow in social responsibility, and at the same time to help each
student develop their unique personal talents. Lawrence School’s program develops concepts to
mastery so that students can transfer and build on their learning. In the Lower School, students are
ability grouped, moving along the academic continuum as their individual skills develop. Students may
elect to continue at Lawrence through the middle and high school years at the Upper School campus.
HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP
Students, parents, school administrators, faculty and staff make up the Lawrence School community.
We value highly our Lawrence School community, a community that embraces the most enriching
experiences and fosters the most nurturing environments for our students. We believe that a
collaborative, supportive relationship between parents and the school enhance the growth and
development of each student.
Our mission is clear. We want to be in active partnership with parents. We want to develop the whole
child. We want students at Lawrence School to be motivated, healthy and secure, both academically
and socially. We want our students to be successful in school, at home, and in the community.
The Lawrence School program empowers students with unique learning styles to develop important
life-long skills and to experience success. As a private, independent school we are uniquely equipped
to respond to individual student and family situations quickly, confidently and supportively. Lawrence
School works with each family to assure that every student receives the services and opportunities
needed to become a successful student and adult.
Parents also benefit greatly from the Lawrence School experience. A private, independent school
community provides many opportunities for parents to connect with one another, learn together,
share, and participate in a variety of meaningful and fun social and volunteer activities.
5

Lawrence School sponsors a parents’ organization called Parents’ Pride. Parents’ Pride coordinates
parent volunteer opportunities, social events, parent education programs, community outreach and
new family mentoring at both the Upper and Lower School campuses. Parents’ Pride also offers a
Parents’ Den resource room at the Lower School for all Lawrence Parents. Meetings are held regularly
with ongoing communication. Please call the main office for information regarding the Lower School
Parents’ Pride Chairperson(s).
Parents are strongly encouraged to volunteer for school events when possible. School-related
volunteer activities allow students to see their parents demonstrate a commitment to academics,
extracurricular activities, and the school. Volunteer opportunities also provide unique opportunities
for parents and students to share experiences.
NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY
Lawrence School welcomes students and staff of all races, colors, gender, sexual orientation,
handicap, national or ethnic origins and religions to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities
made available at the school. Lawrence School does not discriminate in administration of its
education or admission policies, hiring practices, tuition assistance or other school administered
programs.
RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE STUDENT/FAMILY
Parents are encouraged to be active partners with Lawrence School staff. Please keep us informed of
changes in your student's life or your home situation. This information assists us in working
effectively with your child and will be treated confidentially. Information such as changes in
medications or dosage, worries and anxieties outside of school, and the occasional "bad night" at
home are examples of information that will assist us in serving your child.
CURRICULUM AND METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
The curriculum and method of instruction follows the educational delivery system developed by
Lawrence School and its predecessor schools and meets Ohio State Department of Education
requirements.
The following courses are taught:
CodeBreakers
Mathematics Library Research Skills
(Structured Language) Science
Computer Skills
Written Expression Art Physical Education
Reading Social Studies Music
COMMUNICATION
Academic-themed newsletters will be sent home with your child each Friday. Parent conferences are
held twice a year. At these conferences, the student’s homeroom teacher will share with you
information and work prepared by all of the student’s teachers. Additional conferences are always
available and can include any staff member who works with your child. Students will also receive a
mid-year and end-year report.
Additionally, parents are able to view their child’s progress in the areas of reading, math facts and
6

writing by logging onto www.lawrencepride.org. Parents must securely log in to view graphs and data
related to their child’s progress in real time, from anywhere and at any time. Information is updated
weekly.
Parents will be notified when a class change is made or when any event, positive or negative, directly
impacts their child. In addition, LAWRENCE ACHIEVERS are nominated each week. These are
students who deserve specific recognition for their efforts/accomplishments based on academic or
citizenship behavior. Parents are notified by mail when their child receives this award.
The Loop, our Lawrence School newsletter, is emailed to parents every other Monday. It is also
available on our Website at www.lawrenceschool.org/news. The Loop contains important updates,
ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance and punctuality are essential to ensuring school success and building responsible
habits for our students. Parents are responsible for assuring regular school attendance. If your child
is unable to attend school, please call the main office or email LSabsence@lawrenceschool.org before
8:15 a.m. If we do not hear from you, we will make every effort to contact you to confirm the
absence.
Excessive Absences/Tardies
Excessive absences from school is defined as ten or more days absent (excused or unexcused) and ten
or more tardies.
At ten days absent and/or tardies, parents will receive a letter indicating the total days asbent and
the total number of tardies recorded. The Dean of Students will then confer with the parents to
determine the circumstances surrounding the absences and/or tardies and to determine if further
action is necessary.
At 15 days absent and/or tardies, parents will receive a second letter indicating the total days
absent and the total number of tardies recorded. The parent and/or guardian may be asked to submit
a written statement explaining the reason for the adsences and/or tardies
At 20 days absent and/or tardies, a parent conference will be held with the Head of Lower School
and Dean of Students in an effort to develop a remedy to the attendance/tardy challenges.
VACATIONS
Parents are strongly urged to plan family vacations when school is not in session. When it is necessary
to remove a student from school for vacation, please notify the school well in advance. Please note
that because teachers are guided by their students in pacing their teaching, we cannot predict in
advance how much progress a group of students will make. If your child needs extra assistance upon
return from vacation, we will be happy to offer this. Parents who wish for their student to keep up
with their class work should request that work 24 hours in advance.
EXTENDED ABSENCES
When a student must be absent from the school for an extended period of time due to a serious
illness or medical treatment, the school will make every effort to see that work is provided to keep
the student progressing in her/his classes. We do not provide tutorial services, but will work with
each family to prepare the student for a smooth transition back into school.
ACADEMIC WORK REQEUSTS
For any of the reasons listed above that contribute to a student’s extended absence we ask teachers
have at least 24 hour notice to assemble class work to be completed at home.
UNSCHEDULED SCHOOL CLOSINGS
In the event of an unscheduled school closing such as a snow day, school closure or school
emergency, custodial parents will be contacted by an automated phone service called AlertNow, with
a message containing details on the school closure. Non-emergency phone calls (i.e. snow day) will be
sent to the home (or primary) number and your caller ID will display the phone number of the school.
Emergency calls will be sent to all phone numbers on file (work, cell, home, etc) and your caller ID
will display the numbers "411".
We will make every effort to contact local TV and radio stations as well, but the telephone call from
AlertNow will be your official notification. Because we serve students from a wide geographical area,
closing school due to the weather is contingent upon major highway road conditions. We will not
9

generally close due to low temperatures. It is the parent's responsibility to determine whether your
child can be safely transported to school and to keep him/her home if this is not possible. We are
happy to discuss individual situations with you.
10

MID-MORNING BREAK
This time is designated for students to use the restrooms, get drinks, socialize and relax for a few
minutes. Students may bring a healthy snack to eat during break.
LUNCH
Students bring their lunches to Lawrence, except on days specified by the school. Foods with high
sugar content such as sodas and candy are not permitted, nor are glass beverage bottles or other
breakable containers. Beverages with caffeine are discouraged during school hours. White milk and
orange juice are sold for 50 cents per container. If a student forgets his/her lunch, cheese crackers
will be provided.
Pizza is sold by Student Council on most Fridays and Subway sandwiches and chips on Tuesdays.
Orders for Subway and Pizza with payment are always collected the previous Wednesday and the
order is placed at that time. Additional orders cannot be added on other days. A kosher pizza oven is
available for those families that wish to supply Lawrence School with an uncooked kosher pizza on
Fridays only.
11

FORM COMPLETION REQUESTS
At various times and for a variety of reasons, parents/guardians may need teachers to complete
paperwork on behalf of their child. Examples include: rating forms, teacher observation forms, camp
applications, questionnaires, etc. We would be happy to promptly assist you with the information you
need. We simply ask that you give any such forms to the Administrative Assistant in the Main Office.
If the form needs to be completed on-line, notifying the Administrative Assistant via phone, email,
letter or in-person would be appreciated. This allows us to be careful with the distribution of the
paperwork which allows form more efficient timeliness of the forms completion. Also, please be
aware we will need a “Release of Information” form to be completed PRIOR to forwarding the forms
to the appropriate parties.
GIFT GIVING, INVITATIONS & TREATS
On special occasions throughout the school year, students enjoy giving gifts and sending invitations to
each other. Even when gifts and invitations are exchanged discretely, we are aware that other
students may feel left out. We ask that any gifts or invitations be shared or exchanged with
individual members of the student body outside of the school. We are happy to make the student
roster available to you so that you can contact the families of your child's friends. Treats which are
shared with an entire class (i.e., cupcakes on a birthday) are welcome with prior approval from the
teacher. We appreciate your support in making sure that the school environment remains positive.
HOMEWORK POLICY
In Lower School, assigned homework should be mastered material. Taking homework home,
completing it, and having the parent sign the Assignment Notebook builds organization and
responsibility in each of our students.
When a student earns a Homework Pass due to missing or incomplete work, the student must report
to the Homework Room during the Activity period. This will enable the student to complete work
that was missing, incomplete, or not meeting the teacher’s expectations. Once homework is
completed, the student can resume normal recess activities.
School
TECHNOLOGY POLICY
Lawrence School believes that the use of technology is essential to both the educational process and
the efficient management of the school. Consequently, we have provided both students and staff
with the means to enhance their lives through technology. It is our intention to provide updated and
efficient hardware and relevant software for the use of students and staff. The Children's Internet
Protection Act (CIPA) went into effect April 20, 2001; schools are required to certify compliance by
July 2002. This law requires schools receiving certain federal funds to adopt Internet safety policies
that address the safety of minors accessing the Internet in school. The CIPA statute requires schools
to use filtering and blocking technology and to implement a set of substantive policy decisions related
to Internet access, calling both requirements an "Internet safety policy." The Lawrence School
Technology Acceptable Use Policy adheres to the CIPA’s requirements.
Student Responsibilities:
Computers are to be used for educational purposes only. This means that students are
responsible for making appropriate choices when using technology, accessing Internet
information, and creating documents. The use of computers is advantageous to the student,
yet remains a privilege. Therefore, students are required to adhere to the following guidelines
to keep this privilege. Failure to abide by the rules jeopardizes our technology program, and
may be subject to disciplinary action.
All Lower School students at Lawrence School and their parents or guardians must read and agree
to this policy by signing the Technology Acceptable Use Policy form in the packet, and returning
to Lawrence School as soon as possible. Students will not be permitted to use school computer
labs until this form has been signed.
LAWRENCE ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY
Lawrence strives to maintain an orderly and safe learning environment for both students and staff.
To avoid any potential classroom disruption or misuse of phones/electronic devices (Radios,
cassette/CD players, DVD players, iPods, mp3 players, Game Boys, etc.) any electronics devices are
not permitted to be used during the school day. If a student has a matter that requires contacting a
parent they must do so under the supervision and with the permission of a staff member.
Parents/Guardians may call the office to contact their children when necessary. Students will not be
able to check for voicemail or text messages during the day. Students are not to call their
parents/guardians directly to pick them up if they feel sick. Students must report to the main office
and the office will contact their parents/guardians.
If a student has a cell phone/electronic device it must be turned completely off (not just to vibrate)
and it must be kept in their backpack. Students should not have their phones/electronic devices with
them (e.g. in their pockets) during the school day. Texting, phone calling, or use of phone
cameras/videos are not permitted once students arrive at school. While in the Early Morning Room,
cell phones/electronic devices may be used to play games prior to the first bell (7:55 a.m.). After
the first bell, all electronics must be turned off completely and put in backpacks.
After dismissal (3:15 p.m.), cell phones/electronic devices may again be used to play games, but
texting, phone calling or use of cell phone cameras/video are still not permitted. Upon any infraction
of the policy, cell phones/electronic devices will be confiscated immediately and turned into the
main office.
13

First infraction: Student receives a warning and phones/electronic devices may be retrieved
following the final bell at dismissal.
Second infraction: The phone or device will be returned only to a parent or guardian.
Third infraction: A plan will be developed with students and parents to foster compliance with
the electronic device policy.
Students carry cell phones/electronic devices at their own risk. Lawrence School is not responsible
for lost, stolen or damaged cell phones or other electronic devices.
FIELD TRIPS/ASSEMBLIES/MOVIES
Field trips are planned at Lawrence to enhance the academic program and to broaden experiences for
our students. A permission form will be sent home at the beginning of the academic year and must be
returned with parent signature to authorize your student’s participation in each planned event during
the academic year. Lawrence School's dress code will be in effect for all scheduled field trips unless
otherwise stated. All fees for field trips, assemblies and special events are included in your child’s
tuition.
Age appropriate assemblies are planned each year to enhance our curriculum. Occasional movies are
shown throughout the year to support the curriculum or as a special activity. These movies will be
rated G or PG only.
MEDICATION POLICY
Lawrence School nurse will administer medication to students who need to take it during the school
day. The following procedures must be followed:
All medications (including over the counter remedies) must be brought to the main office by a
parent in the store packaging and/or original prescription bottle.
A doctor's release stating dosage and times of administration must be provided to Lawrence
School before medication can be administered.
The student is responsible for reporting on time for medication.
Lawrence School will not, at any time, deviate from the doctor's orders in administering the
medication.
Non-prescription medications such as aspirin will be administered only if you provide us with a
labeled supply of medicine and written instructions.
No medicines/vitamins are to be carried by any student during the school day.
Be sure to notify the main office at once of any change in your child's medical status.
INFECTIOUS/CONTAGIOUS DISEASE POLICY
At Lawrence, the health, safety and welfare of students and employees is our highest priority. This
guideline is adopted to protect all members of our community.
If there is substantial reason to believe that a student, staff member or a member of his/her
immediate family has an infectious or contagious disease or syndrome which could jeopardize other
members of our community, the school may require that the student or employee submit to an
evaluation by a medical doctor selected by the school. The student or employee may be removed
from school until a recommendation is made by the doctor to the school.
14

A staff member who has a communicable disease that requires reasonable precautions or
modifications, but does not provide a significant health risk in the school community, will be allowed
to remain at school. In addition to the Head of School and President of the Board of Trustees, only
those persons with a need to be made aware for medical or prevention reasons will be informed of
this condition.
If a staff member or student has an infectious or contagious disease that directly relates to the health
and safety of others as defined by the Ohio Department of Health, the Head of School may require the
authorization of a confidential release of the required medical information to the school if the carrier
wishes to remain part of the school community. Failure of the carrier to disclose such a medical
condition may result in termination.
Participation in the school program will not be denied unless continuation poses a danger to others.
Such decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis and will be made by the Head of School and
President of the Board of Trustees in collaboration with both medical and legal counsel.
ACCIDENTS
If your child is injured and requires medical attention, we will notify the local Emergency Medical
Service which will transport your child to the closest medical facility. We will make every effort to
contact you or your designee on the school's emergency medical form. A member of the Lawrence
staff will accompany your child and remain with him/her at the medical facility until you or your
designee arrives.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
At Lawrence School, our number one priority is always the safety and security of our students. With
this in mind, along with the mandate of House Bill 422, our administration has devised an Emergency
Plan that includes response plans for a variety of national or local situations which could potentially
put our students at risk during the school day. Lawrence School does practice several fire drills,
tornado drills, and lockdown safety drills per year to prepare for emergency or crisis. Students are
prepared for these drills by staff.
In the event of an actual emergency, the AlertNow service would be used to contact parents with
information regarding the status of school and arrangements to pick up students, if judged safe by the
school. Phone calls will be placed to all phone numbers on file for custodial parents, including home,
work and cell numbers. The school’s first responsibility in any emergency is to ensure the safety of
students. Depending on the nature of the emergency, access to the campus or specific buildings by
parents may be limited until conditions are judged safe by the school and/or emergency authorities.
PHOTO/VIDEO POLICY
On occasion, either by Lawrence School staff or under the supervision of Lawrence School staff,
students may be captured in photography and/or video for the following purposes: parent newsletter,
printed materials (including but not specific to admissions brochures, event flyers, or advancement
updates), school videos, website photos and videos, news media stories and/or video, and other
community-building events and activities. We respect student privacy and protect personal
information; as a result, unless prior permission is granted on a case by case basis, students under 18
years of age will only be identified by first name and last initial (if identified at all).
If you prefer you child not be captured in photography/video that may be accessed my members
outside the immediate Lawrence community, you will need to opt out by either checking the “opt
out” option on your annual Student Information Form, or sending written notice to the
Communications Director at either campus address.
15

Please note that the photo policy does not include inclusion in the Yearbook, school pictures, class
projects, or any photo or video displays that are used exclusively inside the buildings or for use by
internal Lawrence audiences only (teachers, students, families). Students will automatically be
included in all internal photo/video opportunities unless parents indicate differently in writing to the
Communications Director.
TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM SCHOOL
Lawrence School is not able to provide transportation for its students since we draw from over 70
communities. Ultimately, it is a parent’s responsibility to secure transportation arrangements to and
from school. Lawrence is, however, willing to partner with parents and transportation groups in
helping with transportation issues. A list of private transportation providers can be provided.
Additionally, a student roster will be distributed in hopes that parents can contact parents who live
close enough to each other to set up mutually agreed upon carpools.
In an effort to meet the needs of all students, Lawrence also works with parents and private
transportation groups to ensure a safe and respectful ride to and from school. Efforts are made to
educate and train students so that they can act responsibly in their transportation vehicles when staff
members are not present. This involves using a variety of strategies that work to achieve values and
goals such as responsibility, respect, and citizenship. Expected transportation behavior is broken
down into three levels:
LEVEL 1 Example behaviors include not being seated when the van is moving,
excessive noise, or horseplay/mischief. Failure to follow these rules will result in one
or more consequences, including a warning, an assigned seat, or an activity
detention.
LEVEL 2 Example behaviors include not keeping hands and feet to self, profanity, or
physical or verbal aggression against another person. Consequences include one or
more of the following: a one to three day activity detention, a one to three day
transportation suspension, or an in-school suspension.
LEVEL 3 Behaviors include vandalism or the possession or use of matches, lighters, or
any controlled substance. Consequences include a three to five day transportation
suspension; a one to three day out-of-school suspension, and a required parent
meeting to discuss appropriate measures to insure continued safety.
A Transportation Safety Code outlining behavior guidelines and consequences will be sent home
shortly after the beginning of the year. It is expected that parents review these with their children,
sign them, and return them acknowledging their understanding and support in cooperatively working
together to make all facets of the school day a safe one.
Students should be dropped off in the morning between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 am by the east front door
(toward the entrance side of the driveway). At the end of the school day drivers picking up single
riders should travel to the back of the building. Drivers picking up carpool riders should line up one
car behind the other in one of the two designated student pick up lanes. Do not block the one open
lane that allows vehicles to go to the back of the building. No cars should ever be parked in the
dismissal lanes. Drivers must remain in the car while waiting for the student.
CODE OF CONDUCT
LAWRENCE SCHOOL CODE OF CONDUCT
The primary goals of Lawrence School are to develop each student's potential for learning, to foster
positive interpersonal relationships and increase sound decision-making. To accomplish these goals, a
positive and orderly environment is essential. We expect students, parents, and staff to be partners
in establishing and maintaining an atmosphere where every individual is valued and respected. There
is a no tolerance policy for bullying. In order to keep our school community bully-free, we utilize the
Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.
We take a positive approach to discipline rather than a negative one. This helps a student to adjust
and change inappropriate behavior into acceptable conduct. We also believe that each person is
responsible for his/her own conduct and must be held accountable for actions that are harmful to
another person's rights or property. In dealing with discipline problems, it is always the intention of
Lawrence School to assure that the student learns from the incident and becomes better equipped to
respond appropriately in the future.
While we acknowledge that the home is the primary source of guidance for a student, the Lawrence
staff assumes the responsibility for maintaining a safe, respectful learning environment. We will act
to promote and protect that environment for every student in the school. We expect parents to work
with us in the interests of their children and recognize that both the staff and parents are obliged to
be fair, honest, reasonable, and cooperative in working together.
OVERVIEW OF DISCIPLINARY PHILOSOPHY
Maintaining school discipline and proper behavior is essential to a safe and positive learning
environment. Students are responsible for understanding the established rules of the school and for
abiding by them in a cooperative manner. Any conduct which interferes with the maintenance of a
proper learning environment is considered a breach of discipline. Acts of behavior which are
antagonistic to the welfare of other students, the staff and/or Lawrence School will not be tolerated.
Lawrence School insists that teachers be able to teach their students in a mutually respectful,
cooperative environment. The administration will make every effort to work with each student and
family to change unacceptable behavior, but will also limit a student's potential to disrupt the student
body and the school atmosphere.
Disciplinary actions are based primarily on the type of offense committed. Individual circumstances,
the forthrightness of the student and the family in dealing with problems, the severity and frequency
of the offense, or potential danger of student behavior will be considered in taking disciplinary
action. The disciplinary actions listed reflect a progressive disciplinary process; however, all steps in
the process may not be applied or appropriate in a given situation. Offenses of a repetitive or more
serious nature may result in discipline commensurate with the offense and may justify suspension or
expulsion without reference to past reprimands.
ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE
Lawrence School has adopted an "assertive discipline" plan that is effective because it is concrete,
consistent and easy for both students and staff to understand and enforce. Behavioral expectations
are posted in each classroom, and teachers are expected to discuss these expectations frequently
with students. Parents will review the contents of this handbook with their children.
20

Behavior in the classroom which compromises the teacher's ability to teach, or the orderly activity of
the school in any other setting will be handled as follows:
1. A warning from a teacher to a student is a statement that the student is in violation of a rule of
classroom conduct. Because our teaching method permits continual shaping and teaching of
appropriate behavior within the structure of a lesson, a warning will only be issued when in the
judgment of the teacher the behavior is compromising his/her ability to teach. A behavior that is
distracting will be routinely corrected by the teacher as part of the Lawrence teaching method. It
is only when behavior persists that a formal “verbal warning” is issued.
2. The second infraction after a warning in the same class period will result in the teacher writing
the child's initials on the board without taking away from the pace of his/her teaching.
3. A third infraction results in a mark beside the child's name and a detention. That time is spent in
the "detention room" during activity time.
4. A fourth infraction, or repeated offense, results in removal from the class and issuance of a pink
slip. A “pink slip” will include consequences of an automatic detention and a student generated
telephone call home. Additionally the student will meet with the Dean of Students. The goal of
this meeting is to identify and resolve the problem that is making it impossible for the student to
participate effectively in class. The Dean is responsible for an appropriate response from the
student, and to ensure that the student returns to class as soon as he/she is ready to become an
appropriate participant.
Detention Consequences per Semester
•5 detentions A Supplemental Report is sent home; ½ day in-school suspension.
Student meets with the Dean of Students; Parent contact is made.
•10 detentions Supplemental Report sent home; 1 day in-school suspension. Parent
contact is made.
•15 detentions Supplemental Report sent home; Head of Lower School, Dean of
Students and parents meet to discuss student’s status at Lawrence.
21

Pink Slips: Pink slips are issued when a student is asked to leave a class. If a student chooses not to
control his/her behavior after a detention is issued, he/she will be removed with a pink slip. The
student will be sent to the office to see the Dean of Students.
Pink slips can also be issued if the student chooses a severe disruption or behavior that requires
immediate removal. An example would be fighting, swearing at the teacher, etc. The Dean will be
called for immediate intervention.
Pink Slip Consequences per Semester
•1 st and 2nd pink slip Automatic detention in addition to the detention already earned;
Dean of Students meets with student and student makes phone
call to parents.
•3rd pink slip One-half day in school suspension; Parent conference (phone or
in person) is held to cooperatively develop action plan.
•4th pink slip One day in-school suspension; Parent conference (phone or in
person) is held to cooperatively develop action plan.
•5 or more pink slips One to three day out-of-school suspension depending on nature
of behavior issues. Parent conference is held and status of
student enrollment at Lawrence is evaluated.
THE DETENTION ROOM
Students are called to the detention room during activity period. They are expected to sit silently
and complete a detention form that details the reason for the detention. This form must be signed by
a parent and returned to the Dean of Students the following day. If the form is not returned, parents
will be contacted.
TYPES OF INFRACTIONS RESULTING IN SUSPENSION/EXPULSION
An activity or incident that jeopardizes the safety or well-being of any person, makes it impossible to
proceed with normal school routine, or violates the law may result in immediate, severe disciplinary
action. The School reserves the right to govern student conduct on school grounds, during and
immediately before or after school hours; on school grounds at any other time when the school is
being used by a group; off school grounds at a school-sponsored activity, function or event; on a
school bus or conveyance or at any other time when the student is subject to the authority of the
school.
Behaviors which may be cause for severe disciplinary action include, but are not limited to:
Excessive unexcused absence or tardiness
Disruptive behavior including the use of violence, force, coercion, threat, intimidation, fear
or passive resistance
Damage, destruction, theft or unauthorized possession of school or private property
Possession/use of tobacco products, lighters or matches
Possession or use of dangerous instruments, fireworks, explosives or weapons
Aggressive behavior and/or abusive language
Fighting and/or causing physical injury
Cheating
Insubordination/disrespect
Forgery
Trespassing
22

Involvement with, use, possession or distribution of alcohol, any mood-altering chemical or
controlled substance
Sexual harassment (verbal/physical)
Verbal abuse or harassment
"Gang-like" activity
Leaving school grounds without permission
Using technology inappropriately to demean or damage another person or the school
SUSPENSION AND EXPULSION PROCEDURE
When a behavior makes it impossible for the Lawrence School staff to work effectively with a student,
or the well-being, productivity or safety of our students or staff members are jeopardized, severe
disciplinary measures may be necessary.
In or Out-of School Suspension
When the alleged misconduct becomes known, an investigation will occur. This includes
interviews with other students, staff, or parents who may have helpful knowledge regarding the
incident. It also includes an interview with the student alleged to have engaged in the misconduct
to hear their side of the story. They will be given an opportunity to respond and to explain their
actions.
As soon as possible, and no later than 24 hours after learning of the misconduct, the parents of
those involved will be notified. Discussion will occur by phone or in person as to the nature of the
incident and the necessary plan of action. It is imperative at this juncture to maintain a
cooperative working relationship between administration and parents. Although sometimes
understandably difficult to learn of one’s own child engaging in misbehavior, any consequence
imposed will have a positive effect only if the parent supports the actions. Parental concerns of
consequences seeming unfair or arbitrary need to be respectfully shared but not in front of the
student. To maximize the educational aspect of dealing with a problem a student has, the
educator and parent must be on the same page and the student must know that.
Suspensions will also be imposed in as timely as a manner as possible; consistently, the very next
day following the conclusion of the investigation.
Expulsion
Prior to any expulsion, the Head of School will give the student and his/her parent or guardian
notice of the intention to expel. This notice will include the reasons for the expulsion and the
opportunity to meet face to face to discuss the expulsion before it takes effect. If such a meeting
is requested, the time and place must be set immediately and must take place quickly. Lawrence
School may require that the student be kept at home until the meeting has taken place.
Students who are suspended or expelled from Lawrence School may not enter school property
without the permission of the Dean of Students and/or Head of Lower School.
Administrative Removal
In some cases, it may be necessary to remove a student from campus, but not have the removal
count against a student in the form of a suspension. In these cases, an Administrative Removal
will be issued. An Administrative Removal will mean that the behavior a student is demonstrating
is outside the bounds of acceptable conduct, but that the issue is isolated or still at a very
workable level. Administrative Removals are issued at the sole discretion of the administration
and CANNOT be requested by parents as an alternative to suspension.
23

ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND OTHER DRUG USE AND ABUSE
Lawrence School students are strictly forbidden to use, possess or be under the influence of drugs or
alcohol.
CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES
Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs of abuse or dangerous substances represent a serious health and
safety threat to every child. No student will, at any time, be permitted to use, transmit or be in
possession of any drug of abuse or dangerous substance during the school day, on school property, or
off the school grounds at any school-sponsored event or activity. Failure to comply with this rule will
subject the student to severe disciplinary, and potential legal consequences.
Lawrence School personnel reserve the right to determine the definition of "drug of abuse" and will
include household items being used in a manner inconsistent with their product labeling.
Medications being taken on the recommendation and under the supervision of a licensed physician are
allowable under this policy, so long as procedures for student medications outlined earlier in this
document are followed.
CONCEALED WEAPONS PROHIBITION
Lawrence School prohibits the existence of any weapons, whether concealed or not, on the premises
of the school. Whether in the possession of staff, board members, students or visitors to the school,
NO WEAPONS WILL BE PERMITTED. Such weapons are prohibited even if the individual is licensed to
carry a weapon under Ohio Law. This prohibition extends to the school’s buildings, grounds including
parking lots, and to the site of any school-sponsored activity off-campus as well. Any violation of this
prohibition will result in severe penalty which may include suspension or expulsion from the school,
termination from the staff or removal from the board, and restriction from participation in future
school-sponsored activities.
