orientAtion<br />
The prelim<strong>in</strong>ary orientation session is an <strong>in</strong>troduction to the French way of life.<br />
It provides a practical knowledge of the language so you can readily use it <strong>in</strong> your<br />
studies. Most importantly, it <strong>in</strong>itiates you to academic life <strong>in</strong> <strong>France</strong>.<br />
Orientation for students study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Paris for the year will be held <strong>in</strong> Tours at the<br />
Institut d’Etudes Françaises de Toura<strong>in</strong>e, a unit of the Université François-Rabelais.<br />
Tours provides a fuller <strong>in</strong>troduction to the country and is a benefit of the yearlong<br />
and fall semester program. Orientation for those attend<strong>in</strong>g the spr<strong>in</strong>g semester <strong>in</strong><br />
Paris and the whole year or spr<strong>in</strong>g semester <strong>in</strong> Nice will be held at the JYF offices<br />
<strong>in</strong> those respective cities.<br />
Your two-week orientation session will vary depend<strong>in</strong>g on your ability to read, write<br />
and speak French. It usually <strong>in</strong>cludes practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> composition, translation<br />
and conversation. A recommendation for one unit of credit is made (equivalent to<br />
a semester course) for those who successfully complete the <strong>in</strong>tensive orientation<br />
session for the yearlong program <strong>in</strong> Paris or Nice.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g this time, you also meet with both the resident director and associate<br />
director to plan your academic calendar and liv<strong>in</strong>g arrangements <strong>in</strong> Paris or Nice.<br />
These prelim<strong>in</strong>ary sessions are <strong>in</strong> addition to your class time and will <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
cultural experiences as well as visits to museums and historical landmarks.
