Fall 2010 1 Rock Point Road Burlington Vermont 05408 (802) 863 1104
October Greetings:
One of the things about importing our fresh air from Canada is that it is quickchilled
before it is shipped, and it arrives with a delightful crisp edge to it.
Not only is the air filled with migrating birds, but there are whispers of a
coming frost as well. Most of the plants in the garden are resigned to their fate,
unwilling to give up completely, but quite despondent never the less. Except
for the Brussels Sprouts which I planted this spring, in honor of all those years
when the girls at Rock Point raised their own food, and whose memories
always call forth the acres of Maltex, the unruly pigs, and the insurmountable
mountain of Brussels Sprouts. They (the Brussels Sprouts) stand proud and
bright green, heedless of the cold breezes in the garden. They make me think
of the spirit and hard work that has served Rock Point School through eightythree
years of providing a healthy, confident and nurturing school for young
people. It is a happy coincidence that today, while I ruminate on the Rock
Point School gardeners of 1945, our students are doing community service on
a local farm, helping bring in this year’s crop of squashes and root vegetables.
Although many circumstances and challenges to adolescence have changed
since the school first opened, the outcomes, the life lived in community
and common cause, the growth and development of our young people into
competent and caring adults remains quite recognizable to people who come
back to visit from some time in the past. As you will see in this newsletter,
each year the school program becomes a little more nuanced, a bit more
sophisticated, a little more efficient and a bit more powerful, but the underlying
intentions and goals that animate this school this year are in full alignment with
the goals and intentions of the school’s founders. This is highly gratifying to
me, but I cannot close this letter without mentioning another, vital aspect of
Rock Point School. From its inception it has depended on the generosity of
others, and this issue of Viewpoints shows, in deeply etched relief, the many
people who are on the rolls of donors to the well-being of this school. For this
I am very grateful and I bid you enjoy reading in this issue about the success
and vitality of Rock Point School.
The mission of Rock Point School is to provide
a small, supportive, educational community for
teenage girls and boys, where they can become
successful students and learn skills for living in a
community with peers and adults. The school is
committed to providing the educational, cultural,
spiritual, and recreational opportunities necessary to
accomplish these goals.
The 2010/2011 school year started
on September 12th under a cloudy
sky. The mood, however, was far
from cloudy as the students arrived to
move into their rooms, meet up with
old friends and introduce themselves
to new ones, reconnect with teachers
and dorm staff and tell all about their
summer vacations. The start of school
is always a time of great hope, but
also of trepidation as families begin
the first step or next step in their Rock
Point School journeys. It is a hard
thing to be away from home and a
hard thing to be away from your child,
but the program at Rock Point School
provides such care, love, and attention
to the students there is often a sense of
relief as the student settles in and the
parent drives away.
Every year after the first lunch (not
a picnic this year due to the rising
On October 23rd the 8th Annual Ooky
Spooky 5k and 3k costumed race was
held at Rock Point School. It was the
most successful and well-attended
race since the inception of the event.
103 runners ran the race and we raised
$1050 for COTS – a local charity that
provides shelter for homeless people in
the Burlington area.
clouds throughout the morning) there
is a convocation in the chapel. John
Rouleau, Headmaster, whose time at
the school has now reached 40 years,
gave a speech this year encouraging
the students to question what they
know about the world and the way
that they have seen and done things in
their other schools. He recommended
that they revel in unraveling the
complexities of the world. It was
then the turn of the parents, family
members, students and staff members
to share their hopes for the year.
Students spoke of wanting to achieve
good grades and make friends.
Parents spoke of their fears of leaving
their students in a new place but
with hope that they could carry on
successes of previous programs and
overcome the failures of others. This
gathering in the chapel is a moment of
anxious reflection and excitement that
The Ooky Spooky Race
The air was crisp and the leaves in their
full autumnal glories as the runners ran
around the course that wound its way
through Rock Point property before
dropping down on to the public beach
and the city bike path. The end of the race
was at the Rock Point School sugar house
where the runners were greeted with
snacks made by school chef, Kevin, and
delicious home made root beer donated
by Rookies Root Beer of Burlington,
Vermont. Ambience at the race was
created by music from Kevin, vuvuzela
blowing by an RPS senior and lots of
clapping and cheering from the gathered
crowd of staff, students, and parents who
were on campus for Parents Weekend.
Running in costume has been a
growing tradition in the Ooky Spooky
race and this year was no different.
Several giraffes, a skunk, a ninja turtle,
the Cat in the Hat, Captain Kale, a
moose, several princesses, a Mexican
wrestler, and an extremely large
Scotsman were among the runners.
The winners came in with times
between 17 and 19 minutes. Due to
a vagary in the still nascent scoring
is important to look back on during
the year to check in that we are all still
heading on the course that we charted
at the beginning of the year.
John dismissed everyone to go in
peace and the parents headed to the
library for a parent meeting and the
students gathered in Hayden Lounge
for their first orientation meeting. And
so the 2010/2011 school year began.
What it will entail, what hopes will be
realized, what challenges overcome,
we do not know. But whatever
happens, we’ll be ready.
system, I am unable to report the names
of the winners in this article. But we are
very fortunate each year to be joined by
the St. Michael’s cross country running
team and they usually stack the winning
spots! The 3k race which runs over part
of the same course as the 5k, was won
by three young runners who always
top the charts for speed at this event.
Congratulations to all who participated.
We are very grateful to American
Flatbread, Jivana Spa, Stone Soup,
August First Bakery, Pure Pop Records,
Lake Champlain Chocolates, and Apple
Mountain for donating to the prize pool
and for their continuing support of the
race.
Surprise Skydive
by Danny Scott, ’10.
Upon entering any kind of an
educational facility, a student is usually
given an academic advisor. An advisor is
the one who keeps an eye on his advisee
and is always there to offer any kind of
advice. Another thing about an advisor
is that kids are able to form strong and
lasting relationships with them. I was
one of these kids.
When I entered Rock Point School
I was introduced to CJ, the Assistant
Headmaster. I was informed that he
would be my advisor throughout my
journey at Rock Point School. One prime
example of how special an advisor, and
the relationship that one can form with
them, is how CJ planned and organized a
trip for the two of us to do something that
I have wanted to do my entire life.
Ever since I was little I was always so
fascinated with skydiving. One day in
the beginning of the year, CJ and I were
kayaking on Lake Champlain. I had
heard of him going skydiving and told
him that I too wanted to go skydiving.
He took all of this information in and
never spoke of it again.
Towards the end of my senior year the
entire school was beginning to get ready
for summer. The seniors were busy
saying their last goodbyes and packing
all of their belongings to take home.
Some months before, CJ had asked me if
I wanted to go down to Vergennes to talk
to a family who might become donors to
the school. I thought this would be a great
time to bond with CJ and a good thing for
the school, so I accepted. On May 23 we
decided to take the trip. When we made
it to the farm, we proceeded to walk up to
the group of people standing there. I had
a Rock Point brochure and DVD to hand
over to them. When CJ shook the guy’s
hand he said “Danny and I are here to go
skydiving” and everyone (including CJ)
said “Surprise!” CJ handed me a card
from my parents (who a month previous
said they would never support me in
going skydiving). My mouth dropped to
the ground in shock. Here I was thinking
that I was going to do some community
service and talk to a family about Rock
Point but, in reality, I was standing at
Vermont Skydiving Adventures!
When I was able to get my words
together, the women took us in to the
office and had me fill out paper work.
An hour after all of this was completed,
I was flying up 12,000 feet to jump
out of a plane. The entire way down I
had a smile on my face and couldn’t
have loved it more. This activity
was one that concluded my advising
relationship with CJ and made the bow
of the knot of my high school career.
In conclusion, kids should really make
an effort to make a lasting and strong
bond with their advisors because you
never know what they might have up
their sleeves. CJ and my parents had this
planned for me since the beginning of
the year. I was lucky to have an advisor
who was always there for me and could
help me work through any problem that
I ever had and helped me do the one
activity that I have always wanted to do.
From CJ Spirito,
Assistant Headmaster:
I was lucky to meet with Danny
for two and a half years in the role
of his advisor. Danny definitely
maximized his experience of the
advising system, as well as his
connections with many other staff
members. He learned from others’
words and his own experiences, he
was reflective, he took challenges on
head-on.
Sky diving took hutzpah and courage
- the jump was scary, peaceful,
and energizing. It offered a new
perspective of a place we had lived
in on land in the lake ... and now by
air. Taking the plunge with Danny
after those years together felt like
appropriate closure to an exhilarating
high school experience for a student
who looked around and tried his best
to do as much as he could as well as
he could every step of the way.
Cheers to Danny and all Rock Point
students who take advantage of their
relationships with adults at Rock Point
to learn and grow.
“The bee, from her industry in the
summer, eats honey all the winter”
We too shall be like the bees as we enjoy another Rock Point honey
harvest this fall. Gus Buchanan, who is not only the history teacher
but lead apiarist also, led the students in every stage of the process
from harvest to extraction to bottling and distribution. The honey will
be the only honey used in the school kitchen this year. Sweet!
“In Search Of Air” a performance by Lida Winfield
By Thea Post, 10th Grade.
Every year Rock Point School
attends several performances at the
Flynn Theater. This year’s Flynn
experience began with a theatrical dance
performance by Lida Winfield. She
entitled her performance “In Search Of
Air” which I believe to be a very fitting
metaphor. The performance was based
on her experience growing up with
dyslexia and other learning disabilities.
We drove the 15-minute ride to the
theater with loud music in the car,
amazingly inaudible over the shouting
voices of my peers as if they were
fighting to cancel the other out. As we
piled out of the car the noise level evened
out a bit no longer having to compete
with a blasting stereo. We shuffled in
through the small entrance pushing and
jostling for no particular reason. When
we reached the rows of seats, there
looked to be to few to fit the energy and
excitement of our group. However we
all seated ourselves and quieted down.
Looking around the space seemed so
intimate. Most of us would be less than
10 feet away from Lida. After a moment
of slightly awkward anticipation, a
woman came up and stood in front of
us. She described to us the importance
of our commitment to being polite
and respectful, if not enthusiastic. She
explained that the lights would black
out before and after the performance.
As she walked off stage they did just
that. Within a few seconds you could
hear Lida entering the stage. As light
reentered the room we could all see
Lida slowly making her way fluidly
towards us from behind a sheet. A voice
came over a speaker telling us about the
effects of learning disabilities not only
on the minds of children but also on their
hearts. As the performance progressed
we learned about Lida’s childhood,
which was eerily similar to mine. She
had a kind and devoted family, a great
many opportunities for learning through
out her childhood. Despite these assets
she was unable to comprehend much of
the material in school. As someone who
has been there I know how frustrating
it can be to feel stupid! To feel like you
are somehow not good enough, that
you aren’t what you’re supposed to be.
“My family is full of people who learn
and go to college and get degrees,” she
said. Similar to my family who are full
of unintentional expectations and are
unaware that their successes alone can
make me feel inadequate. She combined
her obvious talent for movement
and expression with her body, with a
beautiful and truthful story. Creating a
masterpiece that brought several of us
to tears. Me in particular, because I can
relate to her story on so many levels. I
was really moved by the truth in it.
I not only enjoyed Lida’s performance
but also I had the honor of attending one
of her classes. I immensely enjoyed it
and would do it again in a heartbeat. She
combined a set of movements to tell two
different stories - one of a bad experience
and one of good. The movements
themselves were so drastically different
from one story to the next, it was
amazing. As I said I would absolutely
do it again. This was my first Flynn
experience and I loved every minute of
it. I learned so much and I was so glad
I got to further pursue it. “In Search
Of Air” is a gratifying experience that
shines light on a complex and painful
subject in a heartfelt, beautiful way.
Art Room Renovations
Thanks to a generous grant from the Virginia Hunt Trust, the school art room
was renovated over the summer. Jeannie Waltz, art teacher, supervised as a
new subfloor was constructed and linoleum laid down, the walls were patched
and painted, and new storage facilities were installed. Jeannie was also
able to purchase new equipment such as a drying rack and a table top kiln.
These improvements will all serve to enhance the art program and the student
experience at RPS. “It’s all about streamlining the environment and making
it conducive for success for students with ADHD,” says Jeannie of her new
room.
Senior Initiative 2010
It is not only the art room that saw improvement over the summer. The
Senior Initiative project for 2010 was to rejuvenate the computer lab by
installing new computers, updating software, fixing the table, bringing
in new chairs, and installing energy efficient blinds to help regulate the
temperature in the colder months. The students are now able to use six
brand new apple computers for their schoolwork and access new versions of
software. We also purchased some ‘Flip Cams’ which are small, simple to
use, digital video cameras that seem to be designed specifically for the age
of youtube. Expect new videos aplenty on the Rock Point School page at
schooltube.com.
Thank you to everyone who donated to the Senior Initiative 2010. Watch
Annual Report Two Thousand and Ten
Dear Friends,
It is with great pleasure and thankfulness
that I put together this Annual Report
honoring the friends and donors who
supported Rock Point School in the
last year. We could not provide the
supportive, exciting, and challenging
curriculum to teenagers who are ready
to become their best selves without
your help. Rock Point School changes
young people and helps them to make
the best of their high school experience
and make positive plans for the future.
The school provides the care, help,
and love of a community committed to
working together for everyone’s success.
Thank you for supporting the work of Rock
Point School and helping to empower
young people to change their lives.
This year the junior and senior class
decided to rejuvenate the computer lab with
new chairs, new computers, energy efficient
table in the lab. The seniors researched and
coordinated this project themselves. We
are very appreciative of the donations from
