Greetings, and welcome to the first issue of
Viewpoints written by students. I’m thrilled that this
year’s senior class took on the project of producing this
newsletter. As I write, the natural world is busy changing.
Leaves are glowing colors across the spectrum; gorgeous,
sunny days are shortening, getting darker earlier and
earlier. In the skies, flocks of Canada geese are forming
and reforming their V-shapes as they honk and do their
migratory dance. Although it has been quite a warm fall,
the air is cooling down, showing signs of the coming
winter.
At school we’ve moved through the “honeymoon” phase
and established a solid foundation for the year. The
culture of kindness is palpable. When inevitable conflicts
arise, students are working through these to get to a better
place, similar to the geese making and remaking their
flying formations to best travel together.
We create our school culture by working and playing
together in traditional and new ways. Some of the usual
suspects for the fall include pressing cider, seniors
learning about solar energy and our energy use, attending
the Women-Can-Do Conference, camping, doing work
crews, and participating in student-facilitated Community
Meetings. There is a meditative silence in the chapel as
students do yoga, and a warm hum around our beehives
when we are collecting honey. If you were walking along
the rows of pine trees down Rock Point Road, you would
recognize the peals of laughter that come from the fields
during a game of Capture the Flag. New opportunities this
year include a horseback-riding program at UVM, sailing
on Lake Champlain, and a school running club. It is
delightful to see students come back from all of these
experiences with rosy cheeks and bright eyes, refreshed
and ready for more. All of these activities are fun and help
us bond tighter and grow together as we transition from
fall to winter. !
May your own seasonal shift be as promising and
satisfying as the one we are enjoying here.
Spotlight on Students
By Josh F., senior
I’m Josh and this is my second year at Rock Point. I’m very passionate
about both weather and skiing, and am eagerly awaiting the upcoming
ski season. This year I’m working with Rosie and Kathy on the Vermont
Streams Project, studying whether climate change may be affecting two
local streams. I’m looking forward to studying meteorology in college
next year and someday forecasting the weather on The Weather
Channel. If you’re visiting the school, look for my daily weather forecast
outside of Lonnie’s office!
James arrived at Rock Point in late September as a member of the junior
class. He is extremely passionate about many, many aspects of computer
programming, as well as an avid piano player. He also enjoys cooking and
skiing. James seems to enjoy Rock Point so far, and has taken the initiative
to “question and amend the rules for the greater good,” as well as being an
active participant in the dorm. James is looking forward to spending more
time programming and playing soccer for sports class more often.
Carl is a sophomore this year at Rock Point, and arrived in July for the 1 st
RPS Summer Program. Carl really enjoys sports class and staying active
throughout the week. He also enjoys writing and making people laugh as
the school comedian. When asked about how he likes Rock Point, he said
“I like it a lot here, but I have my days getting used to it.” Carl is looking
forward to many of the activities coming up this year and hopes to play
sports at neighboring Burlington High School at some point this year.
Dani is a freshman at Rock Point this year and first arrived during the
Summer Program. She is interested in music as well as hanging out with
friends and doing homework. So far Dani is thoroughly enjoying Rock
Point and what it has to offer. “I love it; it’s like moving into a new life,”
she said when I asked her how she was liking RPS. Looking ahead to the
rest of the year, Dani is looking forward to getting to know her peers and
teachers even better.
The Oooky Spooky is a race held every October at Rock Point School with a Halloween type theme.
Every year it occurs during our parents’ weekend, the 3rd A Rock Point School fundraiser for a local organization
weekend in October. The race has 2-mile
and 5K options, and costumes are encouraged. The Oooky Spooky’s track loops around the property
and takes its runners through many of Rock Point’s trails as well as the Burlington bike path and
North Beach. The entire race is completely organized and staffed by Rock Point School faculty and
students. The senior art class also spends almost a month designing and printing t-shirts that are
given to the first 25 people that register for the race. Participants in the event not only include
students and family members, friends of the school and Rock Point faculty, but also members of the
greater Burlington community.
"The Oooky Spooky this year was more successful than I envisioned. Not only were there
numerous positive accolades for the new 5k and 2-mile cross-country
courses, but we raised nearly 50% more for COTS than last year. The
energy and enthusiasm at the event were incredible, and I believe all
participants and volunteers thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thank you to
all who contributed to the success of the 10th annual Oooky Spooky event,"
said Joe Ainsworth, this year’s organizer. In addition to all of the human
power that made this race possible, Rock
Point School would like to thank Hannaford
grocers, Fleet Feet, City Sports, Skinny
Pancake, Healthy Living, and Sportshoe
Center for their generous donations to the
event.
The race is a fundraiser for the
Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS), an organization that gives
shelter to the homeless, as they work to get back on their feet. Last
year the Oooky Spooky had about 61 runners and walkers participate,
raising $605 for COTS. This year the race brought in $875, making it
significantly more successful than the previous year! We look forward
to seeing this event continue to grow!
Where’s Elie? By Rosie J., Senior
“Where’s Elie?” is a column that the senior class came up with that allows readers to catch up on the
alums that they may have read about years before. Rock Point School prides itself on keeping up
relations with graduates as they finish up their adolescence and grow into adulthood. We keep in touch
through phone calls, postcards, in-person visits, the Rock Point website, and social media. We hope you
enjoy discovering “Where’s Elie?”!
Elie came to Rock Point School as a sophomore in 2009, and
graduated last year with the class of 2012. She is now attending
Dynamy, a gap year program, near her hometown of Cambridge,
Massachusetts. In addition to Dynamy, Elie takes a Group Dynamics
class at Clark University. After Dynamy, Elie plans to attend Becker
College and continue her internship at a rape crisis center near her
home. Moving on from Rock Point was intimidating to Elie. She was
very appreciative of the help she received from Rock Point while
preparing for her next steps. “Senior Seminar was really helpful for
me,” she says. “Emily and the teachers guided me through the process of applying to schools, and took
time to make sure I was satisfied every step of the way”.
Amber came to Rock Point School as a junior in 2008, and graduated with the class of
2010. She is now living in Burlington and is a Film Studies major at Burlington College.
She plans to move to Boston after graduating, and wants to continue her work with film
while living there. One of the things Amber enjoyed about Rock Point was the academic
support. “Before I went to Rock Point, I was afraid to ask questions in class because I was
always afraid of acting stupid,” she says, “but at Rock Point I learned not to be afraid.”
Although she is not a student here anymore, she still feels close to Rock Point. “Rock Point
felt like a family. I’m still able to go back and say hi, or go out for coffee with my advisor,
Jeannie. It feels like nothing has changed.”
Rock Point Students Work to Help Enrich Local Communities
For many years Rock Point students have been hiking every fall
in support of a hunger-free Vermont. This year it was a walk to
end hunger. Our students walked approximately 2 miles and
raised almost $300 to benefit the Vermont Food Shelf. This is
just one example of the community service in which Rock Point
students engage. This fall they have also helped Arethusa Farm
harvest vegetables, and volunteered as support people for the
Sustainability Academy’s Harvest Run. Looking forward, in
addition to opportunities that arise, students will be engaged in
a full week dedicated to service in February.
Major Dorm Activities Kick Off with Camping
'
By Elliot L., Senior
Throughout the year ' Rock Point students have the opportunity to participate in major activities.
These activities can be anything ' that the students and residential staff dream up – from camping trips
to crossing the northern ' border and spending a day or night in Canada to an anime convention to
whitewater rafting. Whatever the activity, these trips
'
offer students a chance to broaden their experiences.
On a recent weekend nine students and two dorm
'
staff packed up and headed west to Schroon Lake in the
'
Adirondack Park, New York. Our first stop was a
'
trailhead and we hiked to a lean-to by a large pond,
'
where we ate lunch and hiked back. The sky was gray
'
for the hike, but the rain had stopped almost completely
(a few scattered showers came throughout the day), and
'
autumn was in full swing. Many of the trees in
'
Burlington were still green, so
the colors everywhere came ' as a surprise. After our hike, we stopped by a
rustic furniture shop, 'run
by a white-haired old man who was casually
fingerpicking a guitar as ' we walked in. We dropped our stuff off at the cabin
and explored the town; 'it
had a much smaller lake than I’m used to with living
by Lake Champlain. After ' that came dinner; thank you Andrew Rowan for the
delicious chili! There was ' one movie theater in town, showing one movie,
which of course most of us went to watch. We saw a horror movie, which we
laughed about afterwards because it wasn’t scary at all. Ready for sleep after a
'
long day, we thankfully crawled into our sleeping bags and turned off the
lights.
'
Major activities to look ' forward to this year include an overnight to Ottawa,
Canada; a late winter hike ' to Zealand Hut in New Hampshire,; fly fishing in
May; and a trip to the Great ' Escape Amusement Park to cap the year off!
'
Where’s Winter?
By Josh F., senior and resident weatherman
With winter fast approaching, students and staff are eagerly awaiting the upcoming ski season. “I
am very much looking forward ' to shredding the gnar this winter,” said Rosie. The mountains have
already received their first ' snowfall; the days are shorter and the nights colder. Even Burlington has
'
recorded a trace of snow this season. After last winter’s less-than-stellar ski season, many are hoping
'
for a snowier one this year.
'
Rock Point students ski and ride at Smugglers
'
Notch and Bolton Valley throughout the winter.
'
Bolton only received 159” of snow last winter, half
of what they normally receive. Looking ahead to
'
this year, things are looking better. The Farmers
Almanac says that “real winter will return to areas
from the Great Lakes into the Northeast” and that
we’ll be “very stormy and snowy” with average
temperatures. However, the winter forecast from
the National Weather Service isn’t calling for
anything special, with an “equal chance” for above
average, below average, or average temperatures
and precipitation. Depending on whether you trust
more scientific predictions or the trusty Farmers
Almanac, we could be in for a great winter.
What else is going on at Rock Point School!
In addition to both the daily routines and the major dorm activities, Rock Point students are offered
a lot of incredible opportunities in both the dorm and academic worlds. These experiences aim to
enhance the positive intellectual, emotional and physical growth of the participants.
The Wind in My Sails by Jake K, junior
For the first five weeks of the quarter, five students went sailing on
Wednesdays for sports class. We were provided with the lessons by
the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center. We learned how to
tell the direction of the wind so to harness it for optimal speed, to
rig the jib and the main sheet, and we practiced how to tie knots.
We sailed to Juniper Island and Shelburne Bay. We also learned
about some of the history of Lake Champlain, and visited shipwreck
sites. One notable site was where a horse-powered ferry collided
with Lone Rock Point. The captain freed the horses from the bilge
before going down with his ship. For us, it was both a learning
experience as well as an opportunity to grow closer as a group.
Not Just Horsing Around by Macy W., junior
This year four students are participating in horse care at the
University of Vermont Extension Barn. Every week we assist with
barn chores, as well as general upkeep and tending of the horses.
Kate D. has made friends with Old Chance and his owner, Jill. Emily
B. works with Katie and her little girl, Lady Bug, while Macy W.
spends time with Brittany and her horse Balthasar. Chris F. helps
with a horse called Moe. Every once in a while, when we all get the
chores done early, we enjoy some time on horseback.
Off on a Witch Hunt by Stephyn O., junior
On October 28 th , the junior class and a few other
students headed to Salem, Massachusetts as an
enrichment activity to reading The Crucible. We
explored the area and went to the museum to learn
about the Salem witch trials and the effects they had
on life in Salem during the late 17 th century. It was
the perfect pre-Halloween day; the clouds were gray
and the rain was light. There was a gloomy feeling in
Salem, which fit perfectly with our mission. Magic
and mystery are all over Salem, and we were happy to
experience it.
Work in Progress!
A lot of hands-on learning happens at Rock Point School. In the science department, two classes are
involved in outside research projects: the seniors are engaged in studying the health of two streams in
Chittenden County, and the sophomores are gearing up to do an ecological analysis on the Point!
Look for an update as to how these projects are going in future Viewpoints.
Annual Report
Dear Friend of Rock Point School,
Thank you for your generous support of Rock Point
School over the past year. It is the kind donations from
you that help us strengthen our mission and support
teenagers who want to become successful adults. The
school cannot continue to provide wonderful
opportunities to truly deserving students every year
without your help. Everyone in the school community
is deeply grateful for your gift to Rock Point School.
With heartfelt thanks,
Capital Campaign
Thanks to many people’s generous donations to the Capital Campaign, we are able to tend to a
number of essential projects at the school, such as replacing windows for energy efficiency, improving
student dorm rooms, and repairing the library roof. If you are able and willing to contribute to our
campaign, please contact Charlotte Blend, our Director of Development. The combination of all
donations, small and large, allows us to best steward our program and facilities.
