A commercially available reagent of suitable grade.<br />

Description. A crystalline powder. Dihydrate, long rectangular plates from water, melting point =<br />

90 ˚C. Anhydrous needles from 80% alcohol, decomposition 2<strong>18</strong> ˚C (rapid heating).<br />

Solubility. Sparingly soluble in water.<br />

Specific optical rotation. (c = 0.9 in H 2 O with c = concentration by volume, g/100 ml<br />

after optical rotation only).<br />

A very finely divided silica gel, pretreated before the bonding of octadecylsilyl groups to minimize the<br />

interaction with basic components.<br />
