NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS<br />
TRACK & FIELD COACHES MANUAL<br />
I. Call to Order and Introductions Ted Bowers, Taylor, <strong>NAIA</strong>-TFCA President<br />
Meeting was called to order at 8:15am. TFCA Officers and championship meet personnel were introduced as follows:<br />
Starters: John Deardorff, Larry Able, Vic Everett<br />
Head Event Referees: David Lawhorn (KY) Running, Richard Messenger (WV) Field, Cornie Wassink (IA) Multi<br />
Media Coordinator: Rudy Roediger, Notre Dame Col.)<br />
II. Indoor Championship Meet Information Charlie Powell, Meet Director<br />
Reviewed start/split locations, access to the outdoor track venue, access points to the competition area, coaches boxes,<br />
athletic training area/hours, venue layout, warm-up areas, spike restrictions, etc.<br />
III. Report on Minutes Ford Mastin, OK Baptist, <strong>NAIA</strong>-TFCA Secretary<br />
Minutes from the May 2010 business meeting can be found in the coaches manual.<br />
Motion to approve as written: Bob Willey, Rio Grande<br />
Second: Justin Horner, Midland University<br />
<strong>NAIA</strong>-TFCA Vote: Minutes approved unanimously as written<br />
IV. Committee Reports<br />
A. Indoors Games Committee Jack Kegg, Oregon Tech<br />
Highlighted important issues of the upcoming meet and gave starting heights for high jump and pole vault. Items of<br />
discussion included advancement to finals in field events, uniforms, credentials, coaching boxes and warm-up areas,<br />
electronic devices, bib placement, the appeals process, awards instructions, and results posting.<br />
B. Standards Committee Randy Dalzell, Concordia (OR)<br />
The standards committee has been proactively looking at standards in light of the increased in participation for the last<br />
several years. The committee will continue to work within the direction of the NAC<br />
C. Events Committee Ford Mastin, Oklahoma Baptist<br />
Committee members were introduced. The committee will work with the standards committee on task force questions.<br />
D. Hall of Fame Committee Rod Wortley, Cornerstone<br />
June is the nomination deadline for next year. There are many folks who deserve this honor, and coaches were<br />
encouraged to continue reviewing their school history to identify possible nominees.<br />
E. Past President Committee Ed Fye, Doane<br />
No report.<br />
F. USATF Update John Foss, Indiana Wesleyan<br />
<strong>Coaches</strong> were encouraged to get involved in their local associations. Local associations are mandated to send<br />
representation to the annual convention, so it is possible to have the trip paid for by the local assoc. It is a good way to<br />
get involved in coaches education.<br />
G. <strong>NAIA</strong> Update Dustin Wilke, <strong>NAIA</strong> National Office<br />
Thanked the host and alerted that Spire Institute will be the host for 3 more years. Other topics of discussion included<br />
the new <strong>NAIA</strong> website, the Champions of Character Program, <strong>NAIA</strong> Convention and the letter of intent proposal, the<br />
<strong>NAIA</strong> Eligibility Center, and <strong>NAIA</strong> Scholar-Athlete nominations.<br />
V. Committee Composition Ted Bowers<br />
A. Outdoor Games Committee has one open position for 2012. Larry Hartwick (Northwood) and Kent Allshouse (Bethel<br />
Ks.) were nominated. Larry Hartwick was elected by a vote of 99-12.<br />
VI. New Business Ted Bowers<br />
A. Sport Motions<br />
Eliminate the Race Walk as an Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Event (<strong>NAIA</strong> Track & Field Events Committee)<br />
Rationale:<br />
1) The event is not a part of any other collegiate national championship track and field meet.<br />
