Appendix H – Track & Field Coaches Association Outdoor Minutes NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS TRACK & FIELD COACHES MANUAL I. Call to Order and Introductions Ted Bowers-Taylor, NAIA-TFCA President Meeting was called to order at 2:05pm. TFCA Officers and championship meet personnel were introduced as follows: Officers: Ted Bowers, Taylor (TFCA pres.); John Foss, Indiana Wesleyan (1st vp); Randy Dalzell, Concordia-OR (2nd vp); Ford Mastin, Oklahoma Baptist (secr.) Starters: John Deardorff, Larry Able, Vic Everett, Harold Cribbs Head Event Referees: David Lawhorn (KY) Running, Keith Mitchell (IN) Field, Cornie Wassink (IA) Multi Media Coordinator: Kyle Schmidt, Indiana Wesleyan Coaches for whom this is their last NAIA championship were recognized, along with coaches joining the NAIA for the first time. II. Report on Minutes Ford Mastin-OBU, NAIA-TFCA Secretary Minutes from the May 2011 meeting were made available for review. NAIA-TFCA Vote: Minutes approved unanimously as written III. Outdoor Championship Meet Information Mark DeMichael, Meet Director and IWU AD (Medical covered at the end of the meeting) Coaches were reminded that they are responsible for the conduct of their athletes. The use of credentials for athletes will be implemented again this year. They must have their credentials to gain entrance to the venue. An emergency operations plan has been provided in your coaches packet and at the medical meeting. The NAIA weather-line will be used to provide updates should there be weather delays. IV. Committee Reports A. Outdoor Games Committee Rod Wortley-Cornerstone, Games Committee Chair Coaches were reminded that the championships are governed by the NCAA rulebook, with the exception of the honest effort rule. Reviewed general meet administration, including starting heights, allowable spikes, use of relay cards, implement weigh-in times, award procedures and listing of cancelled rounds. B. Standards Committee John Foss-Indiana Wesleyan-TFCA 1 st Vice President Adding Jonathan Zimmerman (Biola) to the Committee. Randy Dalzell will be taking over the Committee going forward. C. Events Committee Randy Dalzell-Concordia OR-TFCA 2 nd Vice President No action at this time, will solicit feedback from the TFCA if a review of events is needed. Ford Mastin will be taking over this Committee. D. Hall of Fame Committee Rod Wortley Nominations are due June 1 each year. Coaches were encouraged to review their archives as there are many qualified athletes who should be recognized. E. Past President Committee Ed Fye, Doane No report. F. USATF/USTFCCCA Update John Foss, Indiana Wesleyan The USATF convention will be in Daytona Beach during the first week in December. NAIA athletes who continued to excel in USATF ranks were recognized. The USTFCCCA meeting will be in Orlando. G. NAIA Update Dustin Wilke, NAIA Topics of discussion included new NAIA staff, the NAIA Eligibility Center, reports on applicable votes from the NAIA Convention, and NAIA Scholar-Athletes V. There is one open position for the outdoor games committee for 2013. Terms are for 3 years. Indoor Games Committee. There is one open position for the indoor games committee for 2013. Terms are for 3 years. The following coaches were nominated: � Jeff Hoskinson, Eastern Oregon � Craig Heynan, Dordt � Matt Kennedy, Oklahoma Baptist Motion to close: Bob Willey, Rio Grande Seconded: Justin Horner, Midland University TFCA Vote: Dave Lee, Warner Pacific VI. New Business Ted Bowers A. Sport Motions Sport Motion #1: I move that we publish a weekly ranking system for Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field. Scoring will utilize the TFRRS.org website NAIA Performance List and will include all marks earned from that season (marks performed during indoor season cannot be used outdoor and viseversa). The scoring will also be consistant with NAIA national championship scoring method using the top 8 marks in each event to score (1st-10 points, 2nd-8 points, 3 rd -6 points, 4 th -5 points, 5 th -4 points, 6 th - 3 points, 7 th -2 points, 8 th -1 point). Preseason ranking will utilize the top 8 performances from the previous year except marks by seniors and students at institutions no longer in the NAIA. The team scoring will be solely calculations with no need for voting or weighing "Strengths of Meets". I would prefer that this ranking system be administered by the NAIA national office, but if they are unable to do so, I believe a small committee of coaches would have no problem doing this on a weekly basis. (Shawn Venable, Bacone) RATIONALE – Every other sport in the NAIA has a national ranking publish weekly and track and field is the easiest sport to rank. Weekly rating can be used as a recuiting tool and bragging rights for teams and conferences. Second: Alan Quinn, Langston Question: Tim Bauer, Siena Heights NAIA-TFCA Vote: 117-104 in favor VII. Meet Medical Info Mary Jacobs, Head Athletic Trainer General information regarding medical practices and emergency procedures were covered. Student-athletic trainers must be identifiable by their credential. VIII. Adjournment Motion to Adjourn: Bob Willey, Rio Grande Second: Tim Bauer, Siena Heights Meeting adjourned at 4:00pm. Meeting was followed by a brief meeting for coaches with athletes in the marathon.
