WHAT: Tire Rack Street Survival®
WHERE: PIR
WHEN: Sunday September 30
Last year, over 5,000 American
teenagers died in motor vehicle
crashes, the leading killer of American
aged 16 to 19, accounting for
40% of fatalities in that age bracket.
To reduce this number, Tire Rack
Street Survival developed a national
driver education program aimed at
teaching teens the skills they need
to stay alive behind the wheel.
On Sunday, September 30 at Portland
International Raceway, the
Sports Car Club of America (SCCA)
Oregon Region will host a Tire
Rack Street Survival driving school.
During this one-day class, students
gain valuable new skills to improve
their driving techniques on the
road. They will be behind the wheel
of their own cars, driving through
real-world exercises, with an instructor
in the next seat to provide
immediate feedback.
Whether in a classroom, music hall,
or on an athletic field: prior preparation
prevents poor performance.
How can we expect young drivers
to respond appropriately to a driving
emergency if they have never
practiced emergency maneuvers?
The Street Survival program provides
students with valuable skills
to improve their driving techniques.
This class is 100% focused on teaching
young drivers car control techniques
for safer street driving. Note:
cars will not be driven on PIR’s
race track. Parents are welcome to
observe the drills and listen to the
classroom instructor.
Due to the generous sponsorship
of the Tire Rack, the SCCA Foundation,
the BMW Club of America
“The Racers Store”
Foundation, Michelin Tires, and
the ZF Group – along with 100%
local racing community volunteers
– the total out of pocket cost per
student is only $75!
Licensed drivers age 16 - 25 are
eligible to participate. Students
must supply their own vehicle
in safe, running condition, along
with proof of insurance, and a
valid driver’s license. 15 ½ year
old students with valid learning
permits and a minimum of 6
months driving experience are also
eligible to participate. Note: due to
insurance regulations, SUV’s, vans,
and trucks participating in this
program must be equipped with
electronic stability control.
Let’s start with the easy, noncontroversial
stuff first, Runoffs
and Insurance.
The Runoffs will be at Road
America for this year 2012 and next
year, the 50th anniversary in 2013.
Beyond that it’s open. A subset of
the SCCA Board of Directors and
Club Racing office in Topeka will
be meeting to put together a package
and process to select the next
Runoffs track. The next track and
next Runoffs format ideas are as
varied as driver input on rules and
classes. Same schedule as last year,
shortened schedule like this year,
different schedule. Split the classes
on weekend, don’t split the classes
on weekend, everybody is invited,
only the Top XX classes are invited,
alternate tracks East Coast/West
Coast or stay in one place for a few
years. This process gets underway
in mid-August and results should
Directly
Speaking
By Todd Butler
SCCA Area 13 Dir.
be out by SCCA convention 2013.
Why should average SCCA members
care about insurance? If you
are a volunteer or participant and
you get hurt, you want the best
insurance money can buy. If you
are a region official, insurance is a
huge part of the weekend cost of
putting on an event (example insurance
alone for the 3 day July Double
National and Super Tour event just
held was in excess of $4000) and
costs have to be passed on to participants
entering the events. And if
you are a driver, you pay the entry
fees, a chunk of which goes to pay
insurance. SCCA is looking for competitive
insurance offerings. This
includes a solid competitive bid
process, and evaluating different
ways to structure insurance (buy in
bulk or have each venue like race,
solo, rally buy their own). A RFP
committee has been formed with active,
hands on Regional Execs from
2 of the big SCCA regions involved.
Bottom line we should get the best
4 Oregon Region SCCA
deal possible and get it in an open,
transparent way. This should be
completed in time to announce in
October so Regions can plan 2013
budges for events accordingly.
Ok now to controversial subjects….
The Majors…what’s it all about?
Here’s my view from the cheap
seats. Not everybody shares the
same vision below, including not
everybody on the present SCCA
BoD and I’m sure not in NWR, SFR
or OR Regions.
It’s about fixing National racing.
Over the years it has become apparent
to even the casual observer that
there are too many National events.
Too many events means typically
poorly subscribed events and pretty
soon National racing becomes just
another race. Particularly on the
West Coast, it typically just means
way smaller fields because we sent
a big chunk of the normal Regional
and all the vintage folks away that
weekend. The creation of Rationals
is a baby step towards fixing Nationals
where all regional classes
can compete with National classes
on track at the same time. The Majors
is the next, maybe not so baby,
step.
The Majors are essentially invitational
events, where the top 10
classes in a Majors Zone are invited
to race for a weekend. The intent
is plenty of track time, large fields
and no more than 2 classes per race.
Each zone has a fixed number of
races (no more than 6) and single,
consistent race series Chief Steward.
What is a Major Zone? Think multiple
SCCA Divisions combined. The
Western Zone for 2013 is essentially
everything west of the Rockies.
Scheduling for Majors is controlled
and managed by Club Racing office
in Topeka and a gentleman by the
name of Butch Kummer has been
hired to run the Majors program
(Butch has experience running and
building the ARRC, as a past At-

lanta region race director, and GT1
driver).
Ok so how do the Majors, Rationals,
Nationals, and Regionals all fit
together?
They don’t. I’ll give you a minute to
think that over…….
National racing is like that village
in Vietnam. In order to save it we
had to destroy it (Google that kids,
it’s paraphrased, but more or less
actual quote from that jungle war).
In order to save National racing it
will have to be destroyed. So what
do we have left? Just racing at the
regions. All GCR defined classes as
well as regional only classes in regional
races. And Majors. 4-6 majors
per zone, no more than 18-24 across
the country. The path to the Runoffs
will be via Divisional championship
and Divisional points, and the
Majors. This change will not happen
overnight, but I fully expect in
about 3 years time this will be the
scene. Just racing at the regions and
the Majors. Yes we can still have a
Regional vs National license distinction,
where a national license is
required to run a Major or run the
Runoffs.
Think about it…this preserves the
SCCA 2-tier system of local (Regional)
racing with a solid national
scope (Majors) racing program. It
should strengthen regional racing
as well as make racing for a national
championship in well subscribed,
tightly contested classes attractive
again. Keeping a lid on the number
of majors controls the proliferation
and keeps them from being watered
down, just racing at the regional
level gives regions the flexibility
and car counts they need to survive
and hopefully thrive.
Next column…on to class consolidation…oops
I mean “active class
management”.
See you at the track!
Let me tell you about My Friend,
Norton Gaston
Two and a half years
ago I composed some
thoughts after we lost a
great friend and racer. I
started that piece by saying
“Dan Hall was a good
racer”. I will similarly start
this commentary.
Norton Gaston was a good
racer, a great friend, and a
mentor for many people. He
was brilliant in many areas,
and a student of everything
from race car engineering
to human behavior and
cosmology. Norton had a
great sense of humor, and
he knew both when to use
it and when to keep quiet.
What an amazing life he
had, and how many people
he both learned from and
taught! How could anybody
not just love this guy?
My world did not rotate
around Norton, and his did
not rotate around mine, but
like a lot of others I considered him
a close friend. There are legions of
people out there with whom I share
the pain of loosing him.
There are also tons of “Norton
Stories” out there. I’ll share a few
of mine as my way of reliving good
times and remembering our buddy.
Many years ago I called Dane
Pitaressi to see who could help me
make our Volvo handle like a race
care and not like a pig. To my shock,
he gave me Norton’s unlisted phone
number, and beyond belief the
god of race cars agreed to look at
it! When we rolled it into the shop
I kept quiet. Norton looked under
it for a couple of minutes, then
walked from corner to corner and
pressed down on the fenders, grunting
each time. “So, it won’t turn in,
but once you get it straight it goes
like stink.”
My astonished reply was “How did
you know that?”. “Just a guess” he
said. Yeah right, not a guess at all…
and that was the last time he pulled
my chain (or at least that I knew
he had), and also the start of a long
friendship.
We took that Volvo to the Runoffs
at Mid-Ohio, and shared Norton’s
time with some other racers. We
had an OK but not great week and
on the way out of the track to start
the trip home we paused to watch
a race from a hill overlooking a section
of the track called the “keyhole.”
It was windy and cold, and Sue and
I were freezing. Suddenly, the wind
stopped and I realized there was a
huge black thing behind us. It was
Norton, dressed up in his Arctic/
Ohio weather gear! As we watched
the race I heard from behind me
“You did well out there. I was
proud of you”. That was as good as
the win we didn’t get.
Years later we went back to Mid-
Ohio with a GT car. In looking

at the data during runoffs week,
Norton told me I was only pulling
a G under braking at the end of
the back straight, and I should go
deeper. My incredulous but good
natured response was “Look that is
scaring the (expletive) out of me. If
you think you can go deeper go get
in the seat!”
Months later, after modeling the
geometry from the front suspension
on the car, Norton called me and
said that based on what he had, I
should have been really unstable
under hard braking. No kidding.
We watched the video in slow motion
and it showed I was going back
and forth across the track like I was
on ice. I was vindicated! Norton
loved to tell this story, and I loved
hearing him relive it every time.
The last Runoffs we did together
was 2008 at Heartland Park. We had
a miserable qualifying week, but
wound up with a pretty good 5th
place on the grid. I asked Norton to
tweak the front shocks just a bit before
the race… he did two “clicks.”
I could tell when we were on the
pace lap that we had the setup, and
I radioed to him that we had a really
good race car that day. I managed
to move into second place by
the time we completed the first lap.
When we went by the hot pits the
first time, in his own deadpan way
Norton simply said to Sue “It must
be working OK.”
We had our chances that day, but
after dicing for the lead for fourteen
laps my own ill advised move took
me off the track and I wound up being
the last running finisher. When
we all met back at the trailer after
the race Norton walked up and
gave me a giant hug but didn’t say
anything for what seemed like forever.
He finally said “Don’t forget
that you were there, that not a lot of
people can say that, and nobody can
take that away from you”.
Nobody can ever take away the
things I learned from Norton, or the
good times.
It’s OK old buddy, you can go
now… but we really miss you.
Norton Gaston stands in the
shade of the tower at Portland
International Raceway, his hands
holding an imaginary steering
wheel.
As he turns the wheel to the left, his
hips sway to the right, mimicking a
race car powering through turn
three.
He pauses halfway through the
turn, his eyes narrow as he considers
the dynamics of motion.
``More front swaybar.’’ He smiles
and walks away to tackle another
problem.
Gaston has turned his love of things
automotive into a full-time
career. Today, he and a small group
of employees massage customers’
race cars from FMR Industries, located
in a series of shop buildings in
the 205 Industrial Park at 5705 N.E.
105th Ave.
He left Santa Ana, Calif., in the early
‘70s to attend the Oregon Institute
of Technology in Klamath Falls, majoring
in automotive engineering.
He worked as the service manager
for a local auto repair shop and
pursued auto racing as a hobby on
weekends.
For awhile he worked for Greg
Lapinsky, who runs Motor Sports
Engineering, a racecar building
and maintenance shop.
“We could work on the customer
cars and get paid, or we could get
weekends. I always took the time.
“I was good,” he says, matter-offactly.
But not good enough to make
a ;iving behind the wheel.
“But people began realizing my cars
-- the ones I worked on -- handled
better than most of the others. So
I began spending more and more
of my time doing that, setting up
other people’s race cars.”
Word got around. People began
showing up at his front door with
trailers full of expensive toys.
Success bred success, and soon he
outgrew his garage shop.
“That’s when I decided to go full
time at it. I got to the point where if
I didn’t do it then, I might never do
it at all.”
Formula Motion Racing opened its
doors.
“At first we were worried about just
paying the rent. Then we wondered
if we could pay it for two months
in a row.”
The jobs kept coming in, and today
he’s got a crew of four people working
full-time.
Inside his shop is an eclectic grid of
race cars. A brace of purpose-built
sports racers. A slender, open wheel
Formula Ford sits on stands, partially
assembled. There’s a couple
of sedans, with mostly fiberglass
bodywork covering skeletons of
steel tubing. In the warehouse is an
old International Motor Sports Association
sedan chassis.

Tools of the trade range from computers
to hammers. He’s willing
to take on almost any task, including
building specialized parts for
million-dollar yachts.
“We finally changed our name
to FMR Industries,” he explains.
“Folks building yachts wanted an
invoice without the word `racing’
in it.”
His services are in demand around
the country. It’s not uncommon for
a race team to send out a call for
help and have Gaston or
one of his crew on the next
plane to Elkhart Lake, Wis.
In October he’ll be going to
the Mid-Ohio road course
to help a half-dozen local
racers compete in the Sports
Car Club of America’s
invitation-only National
Runoffs.
Portland’s Don Walker is
one of the Gaston success
stories at the Runoffs.
Walker combined a series of
high finishes -- but never a
win -- in his Mazda coupe
to secure an invitation to the
national championships in
1990.
“We were working on the
car by ourselves,” Walker
says.”I knew how to drive
the car fast, but up to the point
Norton came on board we never got
the car balanced, never really got it
to work well without being hard on
it.”
“He took over the preparation, so I
could concentrate on driving.”
Walker came home with the national
title.
Last week Gaston was at PIR, working
with some of the drivers headed
to the national championship meet
next month.
A hands-on innovator, Gaston
wedges his 10EEE frame into seats
made for 9-narrow drivers, to put
his theories to the test.
“It’s like a dance,” he explains to
one frustated pilot. “You go right to
the edge and see what your partner
is willing to do next. You keep doing
it until it doesn’t work anymore
. . . until it doesn’t get better . . . then
you try something else.”
A sports racer comes in off the track
and Gaston plugs a computer into
its brain and downloads a record
of each of the preceding laps, a log
of engine speed, G-loads, throttle
position, temperatures and so forth.
“It’s valuable stuff,” he agrees, “but
it’s easy to get lost in the data.”
“Sometimes you can know too
much.”
He recalls a time when he was helping
an Indy-car team doing setup
work on its chassis.
“They had a whole trailer full of
computers and a crew of German
engineers and yard after yard of
data coming out of the printer.”
Still, they couldn’t get the car
right.
“Al Unser Sr. was working with
them. I finally asked him what the
problem was.”
“It just needs more bite
in the rear,’ Unser said.
So we adjusted the rear
wing. That’s all it took.”
The sun is baking the
asphalt along the pit road,
turning it into a sticky
tar that squeaks beneath
the feet of his crew as
they take another stab at
dialing in the suspension
of a car trailered in from
Canada.
The clock is moving closer
to the 4 p.m. track closing
time as they motion for
the boss to make one last
round of laps in this rolling
classroom of applied
physics.
Gaston settles down deep
inside his dancing partner,
snugging up the belts and shoulder
harnesses until they create valleys
in the surface of his padded blue
racing suit.
He pumps the throttle once and fingers
the starter button. The engine
comes to life, and the music begins.
The Solo National Tour and
ProSolo weekends have come
and gone. In spite of the events
being scheduled around July 4th,
the weather mostly held off. Only
about one run of one heat of one
day of the National Tour event was
damp. Sadly, the rain fell on third
runs and (with nothing to gain)
drivers already sitting on a good
run chose to skip their third runs in
favor of the covered Impound area.
Some drama was spoiled, I’m sure.
It was the Prepared classes where
Oregon Region’s star shined brightest.
With only five Prepared classes
being contested, Oregon Region
claimed four wins! From the top
down, Britain Smith claimed X
Prepared. Britain’s done a lot of
hard work on his (mostly) Porsche
914 over the past year and a half
and it is finally starting to pay off.
Smith topped an all Oregon Region
podium filled out by the team
of Josh McCall and Zack Morgan
driving a V8 powered RX-7. Jim
Daniels won D Prepared (which
had 7 drivers!) by just 0.089 seconds
over Ron Bauer. Tami Daniels can
claim a larger margin of victory in D
Prepared Ladies (5 drivers!). Tami
enjoyed a small lead after Day 1,
but made a stellar first run on the
second day and won going away.
In E Prepared, it was Dan Kuehn
over George Wilder.
I can thank Dennis Healy for giving
me the perfect segue between the
two events. On the second run of
Day 1 of the National Tour event,
Dennis experienced a mechanical
failure. The final drive gears of his
Super Stock class Lotus Elise de-
Solo National Tour and
Pro solo
Flying Solo with
Andy Howe
cided to go on vacation. I watched
from the course control position
as the car rolled to a stop and was
towed off course. His co-driver,
Matthew Braun from Michigan,
jumped in a Tesla to finish the day
and then the fun began. Dennis and
Matthew found the Road Tire Rear
Wheel Drive Lotus Elise belonging
to Michael Walker of Pasco,
Washington. Somehow, they talked
their way into borrowing the car
for Day 2. Both cars went up into
the air and the entire suspension
package of one car was swapped
onto the other over night. On Day
2, Matthew was fast enough to win
and Dennis claimed third place.
After the event was over, the entire
suspension was swapped back
and Dennis went home to away
the UPS guy with his new transaxle.
The following Friday, Dennis
and Matthew were headed back to
Packwood for the ProSolo! Matthew
won Super Stock and Dennis
finished third in Road Tire Index.
Dennis would really like to thank
Michael for his generosity at the
Packwood Tour event.
At the ProSolo, Ryan Otis, Tom
Kotzian, and Jim Daniels were our
three class winners. Ryan won
10 Oregon Region SCCA
Tom Kotzian at Pro Solo Photo by Dennis Healy
Street Touring R in Morris Green’s
Mazda MX-5 by just under two
tenths of a second. Tom Kotzian
survived three DNFs (I’ve never
seen THAT before...) to win in Street
Modified Front Wheel Drive. Jim
Daniels won Race Tire Index 2 (Prepared
Classes) by a decent margin.
These three drivers did well in the
Gumout Super Challenge. Ryan
Otis qualified 13th and advanced
through two rounds before eventual
Challenge winner Stephen Hui
eliminated him. Jim Daniels took
the 6th qualifying spot to a fourth
place finish overall. Tom Kotzian
turned the top qualifying spot into a
third place finish.
On the Ladies side, Tami Daniels
turned 6th place in the tough Ladies
1 Class into a 4th place in the Ladies
Challenge. Tami took down her
class winner in first round - a tough
job!
Bonus Challenge - Allan Zacharda
claimed the second place which
won him... absolutely nothing. Of
note, it appears Allan broke out in
each of the first two rounds of the
Challenge. That means he must
have been sandbagging. Look out
Mr. Kotzian!

Summer time is always a popular
time of year for rally events and
we have a load of them in store as
summer winds down and the cool
winds of fall start to blow. Over
the summer we have enjoyed some
very successful rallycross events at
PIR, especially the event in conjunction
with Rose Cups weekend. Our
annual trek to rallycross in Chehalis
is underway as of this writing but
it always a favorite. Coming up in
August is our rallycross in Astoria
on the 26th and we are trying to
find a new date in September or
October but the schedule is pretty
tight. Check the website for more
information.
August is the opening of our busier
Road Rally season. One of the
Portland area staples is the August
11th Mountains to the Sea Rally.
This year the event runs from Milwaukie
to Lincoln City and should
be a scenic run to the coast. While
not an SCCA event it is a legendary
event among the locals.
September 9th is the Rally Against
Parkinson’s charity road rally. This
annual event is an SCCA Tour event
and features regularity laps around
PIR, a very simple road rally and it
all ends at Pearson Field Air Museum
in Vancouver, WA. The $25
entry fee includes the rally, dinner
and a silent auction. The silent
auction is chock full of great items;
check out the Facebook page under
2012 Rally Against Parkinsons.
October 5-7 is the grand-daddy of
road rallies, the Oregon 1000. Starting
in Portland the event runs down
the length of the state to an overnight
in Coos Bay before returning
to Albany with an amazing dinner
at Novak’s Hungarian Restaurant.
The organizers always have some
great surprises in store for competitors.
In stage rally it will be late September
when the Rally America National
circus comes back to the Pacific
Northwest with the Olympus Rally
in Olympia, WA and points west.
This is the season ending event for
2012 and should see some great
competition in several classes. Late
October is the Mount Hood Rally,
one of the most scenic stage rallies
in the country.
Summer and fall are prime time
for wringing out the cars on a good
rally event, be it rallycross, road
rally or a stage rally. Don’t let this
time of year pass you by, get out
there and RALLY!

DIRECTORS REPORTS:
of their group attended The Kenton
issues with the new timing system
that presents problems. The last
event was Mother’s Day weekend
in Packwood and was lightly attended.
They took delivery of the new
trailer and are pleased. The old one
is back in town and ready for reuse.
Decision on it’s fate is still to be
determined.
RALLY: Chris advised that their
entries are down. This may be because
of the late start of the season
and they hope that it improves as
it goes along. Space limits at PIR
are a big factor in their program. In
the past they were able to split their
day, ½ 2 wheel drive & ½ all wheel.
Now they have to do 1 day for each.
And that is not a popular option.
Future events = Parkinson Rally in
September and Rally X in Astoria &
He will pursue this.
Discussion was held on our upcoming
Pro Drive at the Rose Cups
By
Todd
Harris
The Pro Drive Racing Team
turned the 52nd Annual Rose
Cup Races into their own personal
playground. As the culminating
event of the Portland Rose Festival,
the Rose Cup features some of the
best sports car racers in the country.
Many high profile drivers have
competed in the event at Portland
International Raceway over the past
half century to the delight of local
race fans. This year Pro Drive was
ready to put its name in the record
books.
The co-feature race of the weekend
was the Festival Trophy Race presented
by Pro Drive Racing School.
The 24 car field was well represented
by racers from four western
states and Canada. With Pro Drive
Racing School sponsoring the race
I really wanted our racing team to
make a great showing. And we
certainly did that!
The weekend had plenty of festivities
off track, including a Friday
night kick-off party hosted by
Rose Cup sponsor and Pro Drive
alum Nick Fluge, plus a Saturday
Hawaiian BBQ hosted by Pro
Drive welcoming all the Spec Racer
Ford drivers from out of state. We
wanted to show the out-of-towners
that the Rose Cup is a social event
to be enjoyed by the racers as well
as their family and friends.
The Festival Trophy Race qualifying
session was dominated by Pro
Drive, with myself, Steve Fogg and
Johnny Tipton grabbing the top
three positions.
In an unprecedented move at the
promotors request, the top eight
qualifiers were inverted for the start
of the race. This meant Harris, Fogg
and Tipton would have to start 8th,
7th, and 6th! And Dan Halloran
was left holding the golden ticket as
he was moved to first on the grid.
“When that green flag falls, the fans
are going to see the widest Spec
Racer Ford ever!” he exclaimed.
At the start of the race, the fans in
the Festival Curves grandstands
got their money’s worth with the
field entering turn one three cars
wide! Tipton got pushed into the
dirt at turn two and had to use his
off road skills to keep from hitting
the outside wall. Halloran held
the lead for a lap before falling into
2nd place. But never fear, help was
on the way as I bump drafted Dan
back into the lead on lap four. Fogg
was right behind me while Tipton
worked his way through traffic.
Midway through the
race I had moved
into 1st with Fogg
and Tipton following.
We kind of ran off
into the sunset from
the rest of the field,
but the race was far
from decided. Fogg
passed me going
into turn one, only
to have me repass
him a couple laps
later. With less than
ten minutes remaining
in the race, Fogg
took the lead again
as the teammates
raced within inches
of one another. I
made a final bid for
the lead only three
laps from the finish
and won the race by
a mere three tenths
of a second over
Fogg. Tipton rounded out the all-
Pro Drive podium with a 3rd place
finish. Halloran crossed the line 7th
with Goudy in 9th after they made
contact mid race. Finishing 10th
was Irishman William Costello, who
did a few donuts for his countrymen
in the stands after the race.
Weller finished 16th and Freireich
was 20th after a late race spin.
“That was a hell of a race!” is
exactly what I said in the winners
circle. “It was all I could do to hold
off Fogg for the win. He and Tipton
have really become top-notch
drivers over the past few years. I’m
proud to have them as teammates.
And today marks the 40th anniversary
of my dad’s first Rose Cup
victory. What a cool way to spend
Father’s Day with him!”
This truly was a race weekend that
brought back memories of Rose
Cup races from the glory years.
The racing action at Oregon
Region’s first BF Goodrich Tires
SCCA Super Tour race was terrific.
Winners celebrated with a victory
lap, checkered flag keepsake, and
a beautiful trophy, followed by a
Champaign shower and post-race
interview on the victor’s podium by
SCCA President & CEO Jeff Dahnert.
The weekend featured Oregon’s
famous “changing conditions,”
where tire selection and car set-up
between dry and wet settings were
a constant challenge. In every race
group, the racing was clean and
tight. While few SCCA races are
bigger than a National Super Tour
event, there are still those who demonstrate
true sportsmanship -- even
if it could potentially cost him a
victory. During the GT-3 race, with
less than 2 laps to go, an emergency
vehicle was dispatched on track.
When the class leader came upon
the service vehicle, he mistakenly
slowed in order not to pass it, allowing
the trailing GT-3 Mazda
RX3, driven by Gary Bockman, to
pass both the leader and the service
vehicle and move into the lead.
When Gary saw what happened, he
slowed and motioned for the former
race leader to pass him. While
the re-pass was not taken, Gary’s
sportsmanship was outstanding.
One area of the race weekend
continues to be of concern: low
participation. Approximately 30%
BF Goodrich Super Tour:
Super Celebrations &
By Jim Weidenbaum
ORSCCA Road Racing Director
of entrants came from out of the Region,
which is not a surprise given
that Portland is one of only two
West Coast Super Tour events in
2012. It’s just that the total number
of entrants was well below expectation.
Super Tour events preclude
any Regional classes, so the loss
of Improved Touring and Vintage
race groups was expected. But
there were far fewer participants in
National classes, such as Spec Miata
and Spec Racer Ford than anticipated.
So, where did everybody go?
SCCA National races in the Pacific
Northwest have drawn smaller
fields than Regional races? Why?
I believe the issue is with limited
race budgets, Regional racers, more
concerned with Regional points,
skip the more expensive entry fees
and preparation of National competition.
I’d like to hear from you,
but in my mind, next season, with
the exception of the Super Tour, any
National race should be sanctioned
as a Rational to allow Regional and
Vintage race classes to participate.
Your BOD is working hard and
creatively to build the best racing
experience for our fellow racers,
workers, and officials. We want to
make racing with Oregon Region
SCCA safe, fun, and competitive.
We take your feedback seriously,
but there is seldom unanimity –
even within a single race class. Our

track time is strictly limited, most
race engines are too loud to run
prior to 9:00 AM and on Saturday’s
we need to have a cold track by 5:00
PM for drag racers. That makes for
a tight formula of time management
when constructing race schedules.
In August we are making a few
changes to the schedule to shorten
qualifying time in Spec Miata and
Spec Racer Ford … moving that
time to longer races. In Vintage, we
proposed shortening races (something
that had been requested) and
adding an incremental practice session
on Saturday. But, when taking
into account time needed to get cars
on and off the track for the incremental
practice session, it would
have meant cutting Vintage on-track
time by 5 minutes. Based on the
strong feedback from Vintage, any
reduction in track time was unacceptable,
so Vintage’s schedule will
not change.
While adding an extra 10 minute
practice session takes 30 minutes,
when accounting for time to get
cars on and off the track, extending
a race by 10 minutes, takes … 10
minutes. While some race groups
want longer races -- even if time is
available to extend a race – it won’t
happen, due to “Christmas calculations”
(if Johnny asks for and gets
a $50 video game, he may be upset
when he sees that Mary got a $100
bicycle). Without flexibility to make
moves for the greater good of the
Region, we are less able to compete
for race entries.
I very much want to build up our
race participation, without alienating
our loyal traditionalists. So, I’d
rather propose new things and then
modify them based on your feedback,
then passively accept dwindling
race entries. Remember, at the
end of the day, we’re all racers …
but, let’s be good sports too. Good
