The Class of ‘81 Revisited
I spotted an interesting note in the July issue of SportsCar magazine. On page 114 is the
“25 years ago in SportsCar…” sidebar that states the following:
“ . . . a feature article pointed out that of the 10 rookie drivers at the Indianapolis 500,
nine had come through the SCCA ranks . . . The class of 1981 consisted of Josele Garza,
Kevin Cogan, Geoff Brabham, Mike Chandler, Bob Lazier, Bill Alsup, Scott Brayton,
Pete Halsmer and Tom Klausler.” Not surprising that the feature article sounded familiar
. . . I wrote it.
The year 1981 should have been my 20 th at Indy, but I missed both 1979 and 1980 events
because I was handling public relations for the Can-Am series at SCCA’s national HQ in
Englewood, CO. This was before CART and IRL, when Indy was the biggest race in the
world, and maybe the biggest of all sporting events.
By 1981, I left SCCA due to the revolving door bloodbath that was employment there, and
was looking forward to spending a leisurely month at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
with a friend of mine. He was working for Dave Psachie’s Indy car team with drivers
Josele Garza and Geoff Brabham. Geoff was also the ’79 Super Vee champ and later the
’81 Can-Am champion, and Josele was a rising Super Vee star. So, I stayed with the team
and took in the sights.
I had also handled the Super Vee series for two seasons, so I knew Garza and Brabham
well along with their fellow competitor Mike Chandler. Tom Klausler was a friend and
fellow Illinois resident who had built my Nissan 200SX race engine while working at
Prototype Engineering before joining McLaren Engines, and I knew Cogan from handling
Formula Atlantic PR.
No one at Indy had really heard of Josele, so I lined up his fi rst interview with a radio
station. It was a phone-in program and naturally, Mike Chandler decided to call and
disguise his voice, asking Josele about a Super Vee crash he had with Chandler at an
earlier race. Josele was wise to the gag and handled it smoothly, but we had a good laugh
later at the St. Elmo Steak House.
Of course, ’77 Super Vee Champion Bob Lazier lived in Colorado as I did at the time and
I knew him from regional and national race weekends. In fact, we were going to breakfast
before a race in Pueblo, and he brought one of his kids along. Bob got a little angry when
his son decided to cross a muddy drainage ditch on the way to McDonald’s which resulted
in a loud, “Buddy, I told you not to do that!” The child was appropriately chagrined, but
earned his father’s admiration some 15 years later when he won the Indy 500.
I didn’t know ’78 Super Vee Champion Bill Alsup or Scott Brayton that well, because
they preceded my time handling SCCA pro series PR, but I spent a lot of time with Pete
Halsmer over the years in Super Vee and Trans-Am, and he was and is a great racer and
individual.
One of Halsmer’s most interesting stories didn’t deal with racing at all, but his time as a
soldier in Viet Nam. He explained that he had signed up for some non-combatant position
like quartermaster or something, but a paperwork snafu resulted in his assignment for
about six months as a helicopter door gunner! Their mortality rate was maybe exceeded
only by 2 nd Lieutenants, but he thankfully survived that ordeal.
Letters
I’d like to take this moment to thank you and the
rest of the Portland Rose Festival Association
team for another great Rose Cup. The fi nal
numbers aren’t in yet, but preliminary reports
indicate that we exceeded our expectations on
entries this year, and that’s no mean feat with
today’s gas prices. I believe that as people
are making their competition decisions, they
recognize the stature of the Rose Cup.
That stature comes not only from the race’s long
history, but from great coordination between
PRFA, SCCA, PCA, and our newest partner,
Willamette Motor Club.
Organizing these races and coordinating
between SCCA, PCA, WMC and our sponsors
is a tremendous undertaking, but with teamwork
and a clear focus on our shared goals, we get the
job done with pride. I also want to acknowledge
the sponsorship from Temp Control Mechanical
Corporation and Sunbelt Rentals. Our sponsors
not only pay some of the bills, but they bring
more public attention to the event.
With the current controversy over the future of
PIR, positive community-oriented multi-use
events such as the Rose Cup show the combined
economic and social value of racing and of the
PIR facility.
It’s always a pleasure to work with our whole
Rose Cup team, and I believe we are wellpositioned
to raise the civic profi le of the Rose
Cup race in the years to come.
Very Truly Yours,
Jeff Zurschmeide, Regional Executive
Page 6
I had the misfortune to have a small-ish
fi re in my Sports 2000 at the April regional.
I thought it might be good to share my
observations via the Loud Pedal: Things I
Learned About Being On Fire
1) We have great corner workers, safety and
medical crew. It’s great to be in such good
hands when you need help!
2) When what you are breathing doesn’t
seem to contain any oxygen, an otherwise
manageable situation isn’t. No matter how
calm you were when you saw a lick of fl ame
coming from the engine bay, you won’t
remain calm when you run out of breathable
air.
3) When you make a change in the race
car that might impact the operation of the
emergency equipment, you should evaluate
how the change will affect a panicking driver
(see item #2). In my situation, the placement
of my mirror post made it about 5% more
diffi cult to get to the extinguisher trigger.
Thanks SCCA Workers!
www.Blish.com
When I installed the mirror I thought about it
briefl y and dismissed it as being too trivial to
matter. When you can’t breathe, you may only
have one shot at triggering the extinguisher,
and that 5% may matter. A lot.
4) If you see fi re, trigger the extinguisher
immediately. My biggest regret is that when I
saw fl ames my response was “I need help. I’ll
drive to the nearest corner station”. I’ll never
know for sure, but I suspect I might have
been dealing with relatively minor repairs if I
had triggered my fi re system and then headed
for help.
5) Even after arriving at the corner station,
you may well be the only person dressed in
Nomex. If the body needs to come off to
deal with the fi re, you are probably the best
equipped person to do that. If it requires a
little wiggle and shake to get it free, for sure
you are the best person for the job. Thanks
again to all of our race workers!
(continued from page 4)
In 1981 they were all SCCA rookies at the
500, many were personal friends and we all
found ourselves together at Indy that May;
so it seemed appropriate to pen an article
on the subject that SportsCar published in
July 1981. Maybe I can dig out a copy and
reprint it here one of these days.
Josele caused the biggest stir at the
Speedway because he led the race as a
rookie and could have won. A mechanical
failure caused him to crash out. Most didn’t
know at the time that he was only 19, not the
required 21 to race at the 500. Josele and
Geoff both had problems during the month
of May with stalling their engines leaving
the pits, but sorted it out by race day. Geoff
told me after the race that when he took the
checkered fl ag and felt his car cross the
famed yard of bricks, his engine blew. He
fi nished a remarkable fi fth. Brabham’s best
500 fi nish would be fourth in 1983.
For many of those nine SCCA rookies,
the 1981 Indy 500 was the peak of their
careers. Kevin Cogan fi nished fourth in
1981 and tied with Garza for rookie of the
year honors. He would nearly win the 500
in 1986 but lost to my fellow Illini and
SCCA school instructor, Bobby Rahal.
Cogan won at Phoenix in 1986 and retired
in 1992.
Scott Brayton would qualify on the pole
position in 1996 but lost his life at the
Speedway in a practice crash. Michael
Chandler’s 12 th was his best fi nish in three
starts at the 500, but later suffered serious
injuries. He was present at the memorial
tribute for his father this past February,
L.A. Times publisher Otis Chandler, and
now lives in Bend, OR.
Tom Klausler would race Indy cars again
in 1983 before retiring, but not again at the
500. I have heard confl icting stories that
he still works with McLaren Engines in
Michigan, or that he died of cancer.
Josele would never repeat the magic of that
day in May though he would continue on
for many years. He had a career-best fi nish
of second at Michigan in 1986 and is now
apparently into Scientology.
Brabham would become one of the most
successful of IMSA GT drivers ever
in the Electramotive Nissan with four
championships, and he went on to twice
win the 12 Hours of Sebring and once the
24 Hours of Le Mans.
Bill Alsup would retire in 1984 with a best
fi nish of 11th at the 500, and Buddy’s dad,
Bob, would never race there again after
fi nishing 19 th . I ran into him at a Champ
Car race in Fontana a few years back and
asked him why he never drove at Indy
again. He told me the costs involved with
that one race were so prohibitive that it
took him years to recover.
Pete Halsmer was 24 th that year, nearly
won at Cleveland for Dan Gurney’s All
American Racers in 1983, would compete
successfully in the Trans Am, and to this
day can be seen on the Speed Channel
racing in Grand Am Cup.
The “Class of ’81” as I called them then
had their triumphs and tragedies. These
nine were the largest and last rookie crop to
work their way through SCCA’s minor and
major leagues to challenge the pinnacle of
motorsports at that time, the Indianapolis
500.
In 25 years we have yet to see their equal
in a group so numerous and talented, and
perhaps we never will.
Ryan Justice storms to top ten after 1
minute penalty in Montreal
June 26th 2006, Montreal, Quebec,
CANADA - It looked to be another great
weekend for Ryan Justice and the #38
Northwest Autosport team in Montreal.
That was until suspension damage as a
result of a horrifi c 17 car accident on lap
one of the race left Justice’s Northwest
Autosport crew with some tough decisions.
Afl ying suspension component from Daniel
Herrington’s car had made contact with
Justice’s right front suspension, severely
damaging it, and the car’s handling. While
under red-fl agged conditions, the crew of
the #38 car decided to gamble on whether
offi cials would penalize them for bending
the component back in order to fi nish the
race. This gamble resulted in a 1-minute
penalty at the restart, which put Justice at
the back of the fi eld from his third place
restarting position.
When Justice re-entered the track he was in
26th place, but he certainly made the most
of the little time remaining in the race.
In the remaining four laps, Justice drove
fl awlessly, passing 17 cars to fi nish ninth,
setting the fastest lap of the race by a large
margin in the process.
Despite a result a lot lower in the fi eld than
normal, the Northwest team was happy with
how the team performed in this situation.
“Ryan did a great job all weekend. He was
fastest in both practice sessions and did all
that he could to try and win this race. The
way the race unfolded would discourage
most drivers, but Ryan drove his heart out,
even when he was looking at a not so great
result,” Peter Jacobs, the team’s engineer
commented.
New addition to the Northwest Autosport
team, Tom Sutherland, had the sort of
building weekend needed to lead to
some good results in the #40 ClickAway
Computers & Networking Pro Mazda.
Due to the regulations for the Montreal
weekend, it meant that Sutherland would
have to start 31st in the deep 41-car fi eld.
After a great start that launched him into
the top twenty, contact with a fellow driver
ended his racing for the weekend.
Northwest Autosport team driver Phil
Fogg had another great weekend going
in the #29 Consonus Pro Mazda, until the
massive 17 car accident collected him
on lap one. Fogg was one of the expert
drivers to beat, being as high as ninth in
the fi rst practice session. Fogg continues to
impress, regularly running in the top ten,
in both practice sessions and races, in the
overall championship.
The Northwest Autosport team heads back
to Portland to prepare for the next race at
Salt Lake City, Utah, on July 16th. Until
then Ryan Justice and the Northwest team
will be working on their charity programs
with the children’s hospitals in the Portland
area in preparation for the Portland round
of the championship in late July. Northwest
Autosport and Ryan Justice are dedicated to
these causes throughout the year in almost
every city that they race in, working closely
with the Racing For Kids® group.
Shuffl e Up and Deal
Champ Car at PIR
by Randy Unsbee
Morning practice started out more than a little confusing. First, A.J. Allmendinger
went by in Mario Dominguez’ Indeck car, then Cristiano DaMatta went
by in A.J.’s Rusport car, and then Mario went by in Cristiano’s Sonny’s BBQ
ride. Okay, in less than a week three teams shuffl ed three drivers in Champ
Car’s version of MLB’s “let’s trade our players before the All Star Break.”
But that wasn’t all. A.J. didn’t want to let on if he was disappointed by getting
fi red from Rusport, so he went and got himself engaged at Niagra Falls just
a week before the Portland race. In fact, he got fi red, engaged and won his
fi rst Champ Car race in little more than a week. And, to prove that wasn’t all
afl uke, he went out and did it again the following week at Burke Lakefront
Airport in Cleveland. Of course, he slid off the track, damaged the nose, had
to pit for a replacement as did many in the fi eld after the fi rst lap fracas, and
then he charged from the back of the fi eld to win. Geesh, what’s this guy taking
for vitamins?
(Photos by Howard Allen, Doug Berger, Wayne Flynn, Randy Unsbee)
Paul Tracy’s (above) troubled season didn’t improve much at Portland, though he
was one of the fi rst to congratulate teammate Allmendinger in victory lane. The
season-long juggernaut of Sebastien Bourdais (right) ended with a third-place in
Portland and lots of pouting about the race start that probably was messed up by his
own teammate, Bruno Junqueira, when he tried to short brake the fi eld.
Page 8
The race itself was probably better than most in recent years at Portland International
Raceway. Former Rusport teammate Justin Wilson, who came so
close to winning here a year ago, made valiant charge after valiant charge at
A.J. He fi nally reeled-in the Indeck steed only to fl at spot a tire overcooking
it into turn one and had to settle for second. A great many other battles raged
throughout the fi eld before a crowd estimated at over 40,000 spectators under
cloudy, cool but ideal racing conditions. As for the pre-race politics surrounding
Champ Car at PIR, things were, and are, less than ideal.
With numerous cities in the U.S. and Canada coveting Portland’s increasingly
valuable Champ Car race date, this event’s days may be numbered. Portland’s
city government has a vision fi rmly entrenched in the 19th century. With a
Mayor more concerned about attending noise complaint meetings and marching
in parades rather than championing his city’s largest international event,
one must wonder why Portland even deserves a Champ Car race.

Everyone wanted to meet Bud (top left), even top qualifi ers Junquiera, Allmendinger and Bourdais (top right). Speed Towing got the job done
throughout the weekend (lower left) while Justin Wilson kept racking up points with yet another second place fi nish (lower right).
Rose Cup was ...well... Rose Cup. We had
over 380 total entries at one point and when
the dust settles from withdrawals, no-shows
etc, we’ll be close to 350 entries, which is
where we’ve been hovering for 2004/5.
It was exciting. Monte managed to fi nd a
hole in the rules and drive the 962 thru them,
not that Steve Hodge seemed to worry too
much watching him almost lap the fi eld in
the Rose Cup Race. The Miatas put on a
great show for the Sunbelt Festival Trophy
Race, and we hit the weather window
*exactly* perfect in between showers
before the weekend and starting the Monday
after. Rose Cup ended with those immortal
words from Paul Aragon, of Rose Festival
Association: “Great job everybody....Let’s
do it again next year” I have to echo that.
Annual Elections Coming Up
GREAT JOB EVERYBODY.
Any unusual incident that can happen
during the year seems to make a point of
showing up at Rose Cup. Everybody did
a great job of coping and dealing with the
changes for the one time a year we are back
“home” in the South Paddock.
By the time you read this July 1-2-3 will
have come and gone and we’ll be setting
up for late August Regional. Entry and
Schedule will be in the August LP. It will be
a single regional and the track confi guration
is with chicane (September will be straight
thru to see if you still have a 5th gear in
your gear box or a taller 4th gear for the
Hewland/Webster folks).
Annual elections will be coming up soon
and the Region is looking for a few good
volunteers for the BOD. Right now, I’m
planning on running for RRD again but I
know there are seats at the table for RE and
Asst RE as well. There are also plenty of
seats at the table in various specialties as
well. Tech is one such area we could use
more help. Many of us have been helping
out and pitching in working Tech when
our regular workers could not be present.
Frank McKinnon has done an outstanding
job, Bob Skinner, Gail Fetterman, Dave
Franks and many others have pitched
in to help in past events this year. Got
a spare hour or two? We can get you a
Regional Scrutineers license and you can
help process cars thru Tech or check for
compliance before issuing Tech Stickers.
Scope out your competition’s car :-)
All for now. See you at the track.
Solo II Report
Our fi rst event in Packwood for 2006 was
held on June 3rd and 4th with mixed results.
The course was great and was designed by
Andy Howe and Jim Daniels. The weather
however caught up to us and brought our
string of wonderfully dry events to an end
for the year. The rain is a mixed blessing
because if it needs to rain, Packwood is the
place with its covered paddock helping to
keep everyone dry.
We had over 100 entries throughout the day
at Saturday’s practice and 76 competitors in
Sunday’s autocross. Saturday was a great
day of autocrossing with clear skies and
plenty of runs and many people entered
in the afternoon to run the course again
with an estimated 6 runs for each session.
Sunday opened to a wet day and the rain
came and went. Autocrossing in the rain
can be a fun and challenging experience.
Ok, more challenging than fun, but learning
to drive the course quickly is the challenge
and the fun of the rain.
Michael Gatza, Solo II Director
Email: gatza@comcast.net
Fun in the Rain in Packwood
One of the things that I enjoy about
Packwood is the social scene afterwards in
the town. I really enjoy spending time with
all of my fellow competitors after the day
of autocrossing is done. In Portland, with
everyone close to home, most people pack
up their things and head for home.
In Packwood everyone is from out of
town so you can really enjoy the company
in a relaxed atmosphere away from the
competition.
Our next couple of events will be bouncing
back and forth between Packwood and
Portland. July 23rd and 24th fi nd us in
Packwood again, returning to Portland for
an event in PIR’s south paddock on August
26th.
Our last event will be held in Packwood on
September 9th and 10th and if you’ve been
autocrossing for a while you know this will
be an event not to miss.
Our class championships inevitably come
down to the last event in many classes and
sometimes to the fi nal runs. It’s incredible
to watch such talented drivers vie for their
best results.
Also coming to Packwood will be the
return of the National ProSolo series to
the northwest after many years of absence.
The ProSolo series is a different uniquely
formatted autocross held in a side by
side confi guration where you and your
competitor are driving mirror courses at
the same time.
To add another element of challenge
a Christmas tree is used to start the
competitors and the clock starts ticking
when the light turns green. The Packwood
ProSolo will be held on August 5th and
6th.
The Packwood National Tour is the
following weekend. This is the fi nal stop
of the National Tour before the National
Championships in September at the new
Heartland Park. The Packwood NT is the
standard format autocross with your fi nal
time resulting from your best Saturday and
Sunday runs combined. It’s a ton of fun
and the competition is simply amazing.
The Packwood National Tour will be held
on August 12th and 13th.
Our novice school has once again fi lled
up for 2006. We’ll look into having
another school during 2007 so watch for
announcements because they fi ll up quickly.
For people that have been competing for a
while, I strongly encourage you to setup
and assist at future novice schools.
There are plenty of jobs that need to be
done for us to simply have the schools and
it’s a great way to give back to the sport
that we all enjoy.

Top Dead Center
With Rose Cup’s sunburn still fresh on
my arms and ears, I’m happy to say that
things are going well this year. Our midyear
reports show the region and our Club
Racing venue are running in the black, and
our entries to the Rose Cup weekend appear
to be up from the past 3 years by about 40
cars. Good Job!
Controversy is no stranger to the Rose Cup
race, and this year is no exception. No one
likes it when protests fl y back and forth
during a race weekend – not only does
it cause bad feelings among the people
involved, but no one knows how the rulings
may come down.
I know both Monte Shelton and Steve
Hodge, and they are both among the fi nest
people I’ve encountered in racing. They
are both great drivers and men of integrity,
and while we all have our opinions on the
nuances of the rules, nothing that happened
over the weekend changed my high opinion
of either man.
You all know I write for a competing paper,
but I have to say I was disappointed in the
Oregonian’s coverage of the Rose Cup
– especially the Monday morning article. I
watched the race, and I was in awe of Steve
Hodge. Yes, his car is very fast – but he
built it himself in his own garage with his
pre-teen sons to help him.
And a race car doesn’t drive itself. I saw
Steve give a fl awless 10/10ths drive for
half an hour. He remarked after the race
that his radio came unplugged on the pace
lap, and his crew couldn’t tell him that he
was far out in front.
So he raced for the checker on every lap,
and left everyone else behind. Those who
know good racing know that this was not
a mockery of the Rose Cup, but the purest
expression of what we should be doing in
amateur racing.
Highlights from this Year’s Rose Cup
If no one else could keep up with a homebuilt
race car driven by a man who does
one race a year, well, I don’t know about
you, but my response is: That’s one hell of
a driver, and he earned that big silver cup.
Good on ya, Steve.
The American Le Mans Series returns to the Great Northwest for another thrilling weekend at
Portland International Raceway, the sixth round of the 2006 season. The 2005 edition was a classic,
as all four classes set new qualifying and race records. Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro won
for Champion Racing last season in a tremendous sports car sprint race. This year’s running of
the Grand Prix of Portland is certain to live up to last season’s classic.
The Penske Porsche RS Spyder of Romain Dumas of
France and Timo Bernhard of Germany scored a fl agto-fl
ag LMP2 class victory - their second of the season
- at the American Le Mans Series New England Grand
Prix at Lime Rock Park.
Dumas, who put the Porsche prototype on the overall
pole, led the fi eld through the fi rst turn and for the fi rst
40 minutes until relinquishing the overall lead during a
yellow fl ag, They regained the overall lead on lap #84
during another yellow fl ag, but lost it back to the more
powerful LMP1 Audi R8 on lap #140 when Dumas was
caught up in traffi c and Audi’s superior torque powered
it by the Porsche to fi nish 11.8 seconds ahead.

The Sascha Maassen/Lucas Luhr
Porsche RS Spyder, who qualifi ed
second overall and second in LMP2,
was running second on lap #7 when
hit by a lapped car, and suffered a
fl at tire and nose damage, losing
21 positions and three laps during
the pit stop. Maassen re-entered the
race after the stop, and brought the
car through heavy traffi c all the way
back to third place overall and second
in class by the time he handed
the car the Luhr. Lucas brought the
car home in second place in LMP2,
and now he and Sascha are within
fi ve points of the LMP2 Drivers
Championship lead.
OREGON REGION SCCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING-
MINUTES APPROVED
DATE: 6/1/2006
PLACE: Canyon Pearl Restaurant
PRESENT: Board Members: Jeff Zurschmeide, Win Casey, Todd, Butler,
Dave Franks, Michael Gatza, Judy Cox, Jim Daniels
Members: Mary Thompson, Karen McCoy, Bob Smethers, Randy Unsbee,
Paul Eklund Absent: John Elkin, Bud Mansur
CALL TO ORDER – Jeff called the meeting to order at 7:10.
MEMBER COMMENTS – None
NEW BUSINESS – None
REGIONAL OFFICE REPORT – Karen reported 161.5 hours for the month
of May and feels that June should be about the same. She reported on our
involvement at the ATV show. Rally provided a very nice display of one of
their cars and it did draw a lot of interest. The region on a whole did not
generate much interest from this group and Karen felt that it might have been
the wrong fi t for our type of racing.
Karen played a short video that Ntl had sent out that is targeted at recruitment.
Additional copies for any interested can be obtained from Ntl. for
$10 each. The Region fi nancial status was presented by Karen with some
suggestions from Paul that might better clarify some items for the general
membership. Karen will look into this for the future.
The Road Race fi nancial status was presented and discussed with Todd advising
that the fi gures are looking positive. Note: These fi nancial reports are
always available in the offi ce for viewing by any interested members in good
standing. As of today before leaving the offi ce Karen had 265 entries for
Rose Cup and the fax was going as she left.
Karen expressed her desire to re-locate the region offi ce to a site that would
allow more space. She has folks volunteer to assist before the events but
there is no room to accept their help. The lease on the present site is up
on Oct 31st and she would consider it a, “big treat” if she could be out of
there before that time. Jeff asked all who might have any info on a site to
let Karen know and that he will have Don Smethers be on the search for a
site as well.
Karen mentioned that she had a call from a driver who expressed his pleasure
at the service that he receives from Or. Region. He said that he has raced
elsewhere but fi nds the pleasant nature of those that he deals with here to
be the best.
TREASURER REPORT – None
LOUD PEDAL REPORT – Jeff started out this report by saying that he had
a positive comment from a member saying that the LP seemed to be getting
back to its good old self!
Randy reported that the ad sales are going well and he is pleased to advise
that sponsorship has been secured to cover all of the worker meals for the
season. He is already busy at work on next year’s sponsors as well. He
reported $11K worth of sponsor advertising sold with expenses for selling,
which include commission, fees, fees to advertise sponsors at additional sites
etc. running a little over $3K.
Jim Daniels asked if he could work on a title sponsor for Solo & Rally as
well as Road Race. Randy advised that he takes every opportunity he can
fi nd to solicit business for all venues and will continue to do so.
COMMITTEE & DIRECTOR REPORTS:
OREGON SCCA PROPERTIES REPORT – Jeff talked about a site that the
committee visited in Sheridan but that they considered the terrain too steep
for our use. This did however; provide the group with some good contacts
who will be on the lookout for suitable acreage.
RACE OP’S REPORT – Bob reported on the Chief’s meeting that was held
at The Columbia Cottage in No. Portland and catered by Kenton. They are
trying to hold these meetings as well as others that may be needed in the No.
Portland area to show our commitment to the neighborhood. Michael suggested
that perhaps there would be a site in that area that would be conducive
to holding future banquets as well. Bob advised that Race Op’s and the chiefs
are set and ready for the upcoming Rose Cup weekend.
DIRECTOR’S REPORTS –
SOLO II REPORT – Michael reports that Solo is doing well. They are preparing
for an outing in Packwood this next weekend. This is a good facility
and hopefully the rain will not dampen too many solo spirits. However, they
do expect a smaller turnout than usual because of the possibility of rain and
other events that are confl icting.
Page 22
He also mentioned that the rental of $1K for this site in Packwood goes
entirely to a local charity that benefi ts families in need. Jeff mentioned that
this is also a positive for the region as we are required as a non-profi t organization
to donate a % to charity each year.
July 1 Novice School is half full to date and should be a positive event. A
new treasurer resides on the Solo team and Michael presented and explained
their expense sheet to the group. Karen reminded Michael that she still needs
serial numbers of the equipment that Solo owns. Michael has the list and
will get it to her shortly.
RALLY REPORT – Absent, Jeff had met with John the day before the meeting
and he advised that all of their planning for up-coming events is on
track.
DIRECTOR I REPORT – Jim noted that Oregon Region membership income
is 33% ahead of forecast for the year to date. Jim also thanked Karen
for spearheading the involvement at the ATV Show for the region.
DIRECTOR II REPORT – Judy has received word from Carrie Sutherland
that she will once again take on the job of awards for the 2006-2007 banquet.
Judy is still researching caterers for the banquet and will make a decision
shortly. She will also start seeking members who are interested in running
for election to the BOD. Several current members gave her notice that they
will not seek re-election.
ROAD RACING DIRECTOR REPORT –
Todd reported that the July sanction is into Ntl. and the schedule has been
prepared. We will have a Dbl. Regional on Sat/Sun with the HPDE on Monday.
Todd requested some help from Solo to lend helmets for the HPDE
event and they advised that they were happy to help.
Todd mentioned that there has been some vandalism on site at PIR of region
vehicles that are stored there. A few of the groups that store vehicles there
have suggested looking into some good fencing for the area that would deter
this activity. Any expense to be shared by PIR and the other involved
groups. Michael mentioned that his group would like to be a part of this and
would allocate a sum to the cause. Jeff said that he too was aware of this and
asked for BOD approval to be able to place the regions offer of up to 3K
from Road Race & Solo. M/S (Win/Jim) M/P
PAST RE – Win has been asked about a Ferrari track day and was wondering
if anyone had information concerning one. Todd advised that he was aware
of a test day and an up-coming event in August called , Ferrari Challenge. In
reading the latest SportsCar Win was concerned because it did not seem that
there was much coverage on Oregon Region and our program. Randy said
that he would follow up with some current to them and Jeff advised that he
would mention it to Howard as well.
ASST RE REPORT - No Report
RE COMMENTS – Jeff attended a meeting concerning the sound variance
required by Champ Car and said that he felt that the city council created
a very negative atmosphere concerning the issue. He spoke on behalf of
Champ Car. There were about ten North Portland residents in attendance
and they spoke at length about how undesirable the track is where it is located.
He also reinforced the recommendation that Dave gave to the BOD last
month that we should form a political action group of the tracks users to assist
in our efforts to save PIR. Jeff has agreed to head up such a committee
to get it organized and off the ground.
Global has requested worker coverage by F&C on Wednesday of Champ
Car week. Jeff negotiated with them on this and we will provide the needed
workers.
Jeff mentioned that in April he, Ben & Howard had the opportunity to staff
a test day for the Mercury Mariner vehicle that was hosted by Wild Oats
Mkt. The region received $100 for their involvement. He said that it was an
enjoyable day and that the vehicle surprised him with its performance.
M/S to adjourn at 9:45 (Dave/Win) M/P
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Thompson
Road Racing Meeting – Todd and Bob discussed logistics and issues surrounding
the two upcoming events with no major issues arising.

Where the Road Don’t Go
The response to my explanation about how
this column got its name has been amazingly
popular. Don’t you people have anything
better to do? To the few people who seem to
like the pair who got the lions share of credit
of the Beatles success, while I did not mean
to slight John and Paul and their contributions
to the Beatles and their subsequent solo
careers I simply meant to state that I prefer
the contributions and solo careers of George
and Ringo more.... because they’re more
talented!
Rallycross #3 for the season is in the history
books and once again we came near or topped
100 entries. At the time of writing I have not
been able to process the offi cial event audit
so pardon the fuzzy logic about the entry
number. Every event we prove why Oregon
Region was
among the fi rst to offer rallycross and why to
this day we have the highest entry numbers
of any region in all of SCCA. Our directors
of rallycross both past and present should be
commended for attaining and maintaining
these high standards, the bar which is set for
all SCCA to follow.
The fi nal Washington County event for the
summer came off perfectly with great weather
and a fun Paul Eklund designed course. Paul
has been integral to our early and current
success. Initially being the only well versed
Solo driver in our rally group (and a National
Champion) we relied on him to design our
initial courses all those years ago, and today
the mention of one of his courses is good for
some extra entries as everyone knows he lays
out some serious challenging fun.
His Primitive Driving Schools have been
helping rallycross drivers learn how to wring
the most out of their vehicles and the couple
he puts on per year are always sold out
quickly.
As this comes to your mailbox our fi rst
attempt at a charity rally should be in the
record books. The Gran Prix Imports Rally
Against Parkinson’s scheduled for July 1st
is the reincarnation of the old Rally ‘Round
PIR. Next month we will cover all the fun as
TSD and charitable entries tackle TSD legs,
the track at PIR and a SOLO course, all for
John Elkin, Rally Racing Director
Email: johnelkin@comcast.net
Topping 100 entries for Rallycross
$20.00, plus any extra charitable offers you
wish to make to the fi ght against Parkinson’s.
This will be the fi rst in a string of events we
hope to bring you highlighting Parkinson’s
research to help aid our members and their
families affl icted with this disease.
The entire rally contingent is happy to hear
that Margie Swanson’s hospital stay was as
brief as possible and that she was back on
station quickly. Every year we know that
call is coming for rally to help out with her
Doernbecher efforts and the convention
in Reno. We look forward to those calls,
it is always a pleasure to help out Margie
because we know she genuinely appreciates
the donations. On the other side, we were
saddened by the passing of Bernice Stanley.
Our heart felt sympathies go out to her
husband Tim.
In other health related news we spied Laura
Stroke out at the rallycross handling some
scoring duties, she looked very good, is almost
done with various radioactive treatments and
now just has a pesky surgery to go after that
we all hope she gets a clean bill of health.
In other news remember that Monte and
Victoria Saager’s Rose City Challenge is
coming up August 12 and 13. This will be
another double course rally weekend only
this year based out of another nearby Rose
City, Centralia, Washington (still within the
Oregon Region, believe it or not). This is
becoming a popular event as rallymasters
Monte Saager and Bob Morseburg have taken
a different approach to course rallies.
Instead of a brain busting ultra devious event
that would lose most of us in the tire warm-up
section they write a more easily run event that
is still plenty challenging, but not aggravating.
Last year got rave reviews, expect no less this
year. Being the legendary Bob Morseburg’s
event writing debut that alone could be worth
the price of admission so that you can tell
people you were there for his fi rst!
Nominations will be opening soon for
positions on the Oregon Region
Board of Directors. I have decided not to run
for a third term, rather opting to concentrate
on being a full time Dad to my one year old.
This doesn’t mean you won’t still be seeing out
and about in this car and that, but it does mean
you can’t blame me anymore if something
goes wrong. We need a strong leader to step
forward and help guide rallycross, road rally
and rallysprint in Oregon Region. You have
the best possible supporting cast anyone
could ask for and if you like meetings this
could be for you. Working with the region
and all its Board members the past two years
has been rewarding. Contact Director Judy
Cox via the oregonscca.com website to be put
on the ballot.
Next month I will prattle on about Kevin
Poirier’s Rally Against Parkinson’s, which
would not be possible without the tremendous
support of Gran Prix Imports in Wilsonville.
I will talk about our July rallycross events,
and will probably have to further defend the
music of Ringo Starr and George Harrison.
The Duck Stops Here
Once again, it was another Rose Cup
weekend for the record books. The crown
jewel of West coast club racing shone
brightly. Steve Hodge’s victory on track
was only eclipsed by his comments on the
podium about the future of our favorite
city park and Oregon region. Steve, you
get the fi rst tip-of-the-helmet for telling it
like it is, and being spot on.
Rose Cup also marked the return of
“Pappy” Pearson after an eleven-year
hiatus. His brand new Corvette did not
race (Earl got a bug), but he promises
to return again soon. It was also great to
see Jim Norlin up and around (don’t ask
where Richard is), and to see Patty get
signed off on another race towards her
re-license.
It was also great to see the worker count
back up, Special thanks to the out of town
help that ranged from Mike Evans to
Roger Soloman, with many in between.
Believe a Spec Miata can fl y! Ask #71
Chuck Hall. But it was Al Crisp who
stuck the landing, and his RX-8 landed
on the tire wall at the exit of turn three.
Another tip-of-the-helmet goes out to
Dane Pitaressi (founder of ProDrive)
and Mark Z. Goodman, who were two of
the three recipients of this year’s Rolla
Vollstedt award for lifetime achievement
in racing. They got it for their yeoman
work as the Champ Car broadcasters.
Now we need to talk about who named
those chicanes for the celebrity go-kart
race!
Can anybody stop Todd Harris in a Spec
Racer? What is that, eight national wins
in a row at P.I.R?
In the not enough mustard in the world to
cover him category for Rose Cup winners,
I nominate Gary “Helio” Bockman for
his fence climbing. The crowd did eat
it up.
A get well goes out south of the border
to “Sweet” Sally Lane who recently had
heart by-pass surgery.
Sure was nice of Win Casey to bring Stan
Huntley out for Champ Car and Rose
Another tip-of-the-helmet goes out to
Don Knapp for loaning Russ Nyberg
his Mustang to be the pace car for the
FF-2000 race during the Champ Car
weekend.
Peter Olivola, the FF2000 series chief
steward, had nothing but praise for our
team’s efforts during his races. A huge tip
goes to the crew in turns 9, 10 & 11 for
keeping the tower on top of everything
during the chaos that was the end of the
second race.
On Saturday of Champ Car, our mayor
“brunched” with the thirty people north
Portland people who complain about the
track noise. I am told he visited the track
the next day, but with an invisible profi le.
Makes you wonder how the wishes
of thirty can speak louder than thirty
thousand who bought tickets. Portland
residents, remember this next year when
the election comes around. It’s all about
priorities.
It will be a long time before the “Bud”
day at the track will ever be topped! It
was an instant legendary moment in track
history. I know, Bud! Do you?
A tip-of-the-helmet goes out to Scott
Rinde former novice of the year whose
fi fth place fi nish in the USTCC race was
the best for local heroes. Andrew King
came in twenty-second in the FF-2000
race Saturday, while former local driver
Scott Foutch came in 18th.
Our friends from FF-2000 were also
impressed with the Saturday night social.
I believe this region is at the head of the
class when it comes to partying. The TC
Blues Band never sounded better.
Champ Car: GREAT races, great specialty
Director Duck
It is with a heavy heart that I start this
month’s column off with news of lay-offs
in Topeka. The layoffs are solely due to
the cash shortfall; they were not related to
performance. With the departure of Barb
Lundquist, the future of the University
and Foundation is up in the air. Being
a foundation board member, I am very
concerned about getting the programs
back up to full speed. The board of the
foundation is meeting during the Run-
Offs and I will report back to you then.
All of this cash crisis stems from a signed
sponsor reneging on a contract to the tune
of Two hundred fi fty thousand dollars for
ProRacing. Jim Julow is in negotiations
as this is written for a settlement.
The projected Pro shortage of three
hundred thousand for this year has been
cut in half by the fi ve hundred dollar
increase in entry fees. With the new
management in place many things are
looking up for the 2007 season. Herb
Fishel has come onboard the Pro board
and his leadership and industry contacts
can only help to right this listing ship.
The Speed TV contract renewal is
underway. The bank note for Pro has
been restructured and repayment on the
principle is underway. The future of Pro
is the number one topic facing this club
and the BOD.
Many have asked why Jim Julow has
not traveled out to events as much as his
predecessor did.
This is because of the cost of travel and the
fact his time is needed elsewhere putting
his fi ngers in the dyke so to speak. But I
must say with each contact I have with
him my respect for him and his industry
knowledge grows. He is indeed the right
man at the right time for this job.
Jim has told the BOD that way too much
time, resources and money has been
spent on the Pro side and his mission is
Howard Allen, Competition Manager
Email: howduck@qwest.net
Business Recap from Topeka
to concentrate on the “club” side because
that is the core of our business.
Jim has fl oated some great club ideas
like an East & West Coast Run-Offs with
all three parts of the club operating at
once at the same site. Hopefully at our
August meeting the BOD will get the full
proposal. Remember at our May meeting
Jim had only been on the job sixty days.
Yes the SCCA and Fran Am lawsuit has
been settled. It is good to have this behind
us. As part of that settlement, there were
specifi c non-disclosure agreements,
which preclude us from providing any
further information on the subject. The
SCCA and its related parties will not
comment on any of the specifi cs, answer
any questions, confi rm, or deny any
statements made by any other parties.
Some more demographics for you: 56%
of our regions hold races, 97% of the
regions hold Solos. Solo puts on 1200
events a year (three to one over club
races) for 91 thousand participants. With
65-70% of them being club members.
Right now Solo has the best and largest
sponsorship in the club with the Tire
Rack package.
As of June 15th the Run-Offs had 443
entrants. Some of the enhancements
for these years Run-Offs are access
& transportation to local attractions,
Monday-Thursday Kids Zone (SORRY
NO day care), and a wizard of Oz trivia
contest. Also there are plans for an
inaugural photo of drivers and volunteers.
Also negotiations are on to make the
paddock Wi-Fi. Also there is a Regional
Road Trip challenge, that is the region
with the most workers and drivers will get
a free 2007 event sanction, free national
dues to the winning regions participants
along with a trophy.
Monday night will be the welcome to
Topeka dinner at the track (Wizard of
oz theme), Thursday night will be the
Disco fever party (moved from Saturday
to include more drivers. Also as this is
written the schedule is being revised to
make sure EVERY class has at least one
stand alone qualifying.
Now that the twenty-four races for the
Run-Offs motion has passed the CRB
has the direction to begin the process
of class consolidation and present new
classes in an effort to bring newer model
cars to the track to compete. Car classes
are not meant to be forever and this club
if it is to survive needs to bring newer
cars to the track. Especially a place for
the World Challenge cars, which attract
a younger crowd. Also there will be NO
2007 nationals this December.
The BOD has agreed to look into the
possible sale of Enterprises.
Here is a recap of the May fi nancials for
the club. Membership revenue came in
slightly above budget for the fi fth month
in a row, which is a very good trend for the
club. However, Insurance revenues are
running behind for the month and YTD.
Car counts are down in Club Racing and
Solo events, which has a negative effect
on insurance. This means that the entry
fees are down because of this. Pro racing
may be self suffi cient in any given month
in 2006, but overall they will not be able
to meet all of their obligations. This will
continue to put pressure on our cash fl ow
situation in 2006 for the club.
Now from a competitors note, the Seattle
double national runs a close second to the
Rose Cup when it comes to the tradition
of Northwest club racing. This year’s
event was the best one on record of the
12 or 14 so that I have competed in. So
a tip-of-the-helmet goes out to the NW
region crew for making it happen.
Until next month:
