Mentored by her mother, REALTOR ® Joye Kuhn, Jeanne put into practice her many words of wisdom. Her first encounter with real estate industry began in Houston in the early 1980s. “My parents had the first relocation broker business in the city. My pioneer mother created the ‘neutralization of the house’ concept,” Jeanne recalls. “Neutralization” meant Jeanne, along with her younger siblings, scrubbed floors and washed windows in homes, sitting empty for years due to the bust. This family experience not only provided new tenants with a “picture-perfect home when they turned on the lights,” but sealed young Jeanne’s goals. “I ran from real estate! I was not going to clean another house,” she says with a laugh. Her journey back to the industry didn’t come until years later. A Southern Methodist University (SMU) business graduate in 1986, Jeanne entered insurance. The five-foot, 10-inch, outspoken Jeanne soon discovered the industry challenges women faced.
A Family Affairby Terri Schexnayder “Very few women succeeded. One of the few who did, my mentor, got the arrow to her back as a target in that male-dominated world. Although equal to my male associates, I was expected to be back at the office, holding down the fort,” says Jeanne. Her mother, who had since moved to Dallas, again encouraged Jeanne to expand her horizons. Joye, an independent REALTOR ® , invited Jeanne to join her. They partnered in 1996 and Jeanne’s career took off. Inducted into the REMAX 2010 Hall of Fame and gaining membership into the Platinum and 100% Clubs, she soared through the glass ceiling and beyond. Jeanne attributes her success to her faith, her mother’s mentorship, and forward-thinking. “Back then, my mom and I were among the first documented Internet users. We sent a gentleman looking for horse property emails about different real estate, before he actually came to look at them.” The mother-daughter team (also one of the firsts in the industry) tapped into new technology to create a website where builders could centralize their spec home inventory.
