Welcome to the Henri Lloyd Salcombe Yacht Club
117th Regatta.
Following on from the Olympics, the summer of 2012 is
going to be truly memorable.
The Flag Officers, together with my SYC team and a
host of club volunteers will do all we can to ensure a
unique week of close racing and good fun. Enjoy!
If you intend to keep your boat on Millbay beach you
must obtain a Millbay sticker from SYC. Please be
aware that it is a private beach, and that it is essential
that we retain the goodwill of the owners who live in
the adjacent houses. Public toilets are available at the
National Trust Car Park. Please make sure that your
boat is not in the way of the owners by keeping all
boats at least two boat lengths away from the house
side of the beach and slipways, also please respect their
wishes regarding behaviour, noise, litter and no
barbecues. Please also pull your boat up at least two
boat lengths above the high water mark and leave some
gaps in the boat line so that other beach users can get
to the water!

Please be mindful of other Estuary Users If you are
involved in an incident that causes damage to any craft,
property or person, you must file an MAIB Incident
Report form, available from the Harbour Office or SYC.
Please regularly check the Notice board just inside the
Club House for results and any changes to Sailing
Instructions or other notices concerning this event.

Salcombe Yacht Club Olympic connections
1908
Earlier this year Mary Berry kindly opened our new Galley with
Malcolm and Sue Squire.
The 1908 London Olympic Games included yacht racing. The
organisation of the Olympic Regatta was placed in the hands of
the Yacht Racing Association (now the RYA) which then chose
Charles Newton-Robinson to be its representative on the
British Olympic Council. This well dressed Edwardian yachtsman
was Vice-Commodore of Salcombe Yacht Club.
The regatta was quite unlike today’s Olympic sailing. Until the
1970s keelboats were predominant amongst the Olympic classes,
the only dinghy being the single hander, introduced in 1920. In
1956 the two
man dinghy
finally appeared.
Since then
dinghies and sailboards have steadily grown in
number leaving just two small Olympic
keelboats for 2012.

The Salcombe Store opened in December 1998 and became involved with
SYC the following summer by sponsoring the SYC Regatta. The
partnership has gone from strength to strenght since and SYC very much
enjoy working with D Collins in the Salcombe Store. In 2012 the daily
intelligent innovation
results sheet will also be posted in the Salcombe Store window.
Henri Lloyd also kndly provided the overall Regatta Trophy awarded to the must successful
sailor in any fleet. To win the Henri Lloyd trophy at Salcombe Yacht Club Regatta is indeed a
prestigious title!

It gives myself, Stuart Read and Dale Came, Directors of Sabre great
pleasure to further enhance our connection with the Yacht Club by
sponsoring this year’s Cruiser Class. Some of you will be aware of our
affinity sponsorship arrangement where all new marine insurance contracts effected by members
provide support for the cadets and to date this has provided nearly £500 for cadet funds.
I fondly remember my early days as a cadet when I was first introduced to sail power and the
Optimist class by Shirley Tyler; although I enjoyed ebing on the water after a couple of summer I
realised that sail power was not my thing and the more comfortable option was accompanying my
father and the likes of Roger Whiteway in the rescue boat. As time moved on the oval ball became
the attraction in Salcombe and thus my long association with the Rugby Club developed.
Sabre are now in their 15th year and we have evolved from a “two man band” to a Company that
employs 24 individuals offering specialism in many areas of both Financial Planning and Insurance
Broking. From a standing start we now look after more that 2500 clients across the South West
and beyond.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Where do I launch?
Batson Public Slipway, Salcombe, TQ8 8DU SX 5024 3767 Boat Park Open 9.00am-6.00pm
2. How do I get my Trolley to Mill Bay?
There will a SYC representative at Batson to help take trolleys across to Mill Bay on Friday 6.00-8.00pm and on Saturday
6.00-7.00pm. After the racing on Friday 12th there will be a return service.
East Portlemouth Council and the National Trust request that boats are not delivered to Mill Bay by road between 9.00am
- 5.00pm.
3. Where do I park my trailer/car?
Pre Book a boat trailer Space on the entry form or with the SYC Office. Follow signage to Salcombe Primary School. Car
Parking is available at the Salcombe Park & Ride. Season tickets can be bought from the Salcombe Post Office and the
Tourist Information Centre.
4. How do I get to Mill Bay for Racing each day?
Bring your own inflatable with outboard, or use the East Portlemouth Ferry. Depending on the tide you can walk to Mill Bay
along the Beach or along the road. Hire a tender. Whitestrand Boat Hire will give you a 10% discount for a daily or weekly
booking (not hourly or four hourly) for getting to Mill Bay. Please mention the code ‘WBHSYC’ when booking.
5. Are all my family welcome at the Yacht Club?
Yes, indeed they are! SYC is family orientated. However due to Licensing regulations children are not permitted in the bar
but we do have a Cadet room. This year we are making our Mid Week Regatta Stomp particularly family friendly.
There are discounts for multiple entries from the same family with second and subsequent cadet boats half price.
6. Who should I contact with any queries during Regatta Week?
The SYC Office will be open from (9.00am-6.00pm) 01548 842593 or contact the Fleet Captains

7. What is the Fairway?
This is a lane for non racing craft. It is set out in the Sailing Instructions and when you come to the briefing it will be
explained to you. The Briefing is 7.00pm on Saturday 11th August.
8. Where do I stay?
There are links to some accommodation on the SYC Website, also contact Salcombe Tourist Information 843927 or
Coast & Country Cottages 843773 or Salcombe & Dartmouth Holiday Homes 843485.
Last year Salcombe RNLI lifeboats launched 33 times,
with 11 rescues being during the hours of darkness.
The crew spent 474 man-hours at sea on emergency
callouts, rescued 44 people and 14 vessels.
Please come and support your local lifeboat crew at the following events
