Asphalt with Lucobit®
History – Origin of the LUCOBIT AG since 1966
LUCOBIT AG was founded as an independent company in
the year 2000 and, based on the available know-how, has
since specialised in the production, marketing and sales of
flexible polyolefins.
But the LUCOBIT story starts far earlier, because Lucobit® was
developed and patented by BASF more than 40 years ago. It is
the trade name for ECB (Ethylene Copolymer Bitumen), a qua-
Netherlands
lity material that has become firmly established worldwide in
the production of sealing products, e.g. for sealing membranes
of flat roofs & green roofs, as well as a polymer additive in
asphalt for road construction.
The additive to polymer modification
_ Current problems in road construction
The efficiency and utility value
of our roads is dependent on
various climatic forces and traffic-related
developments. The
number of motorists increases
exponentially and particularly
the rise in HGV traffic with higher
axle loads is straining roads in a
way that one can detect poor resistant
of road by ruts and cracks
just by looking it. Taking into account
the structurally accurate
execution, we have to confront
_ The product
Lucobit 1210A is a grained thermoplastic
synthetic material existing
of a mixture of premium
polyethylene copolymer and a
special type of bitumen (ECB).
The pure bitumen is homogeneously
dispersed into a polymer
matrix. Lucobit 1210A can be
mixed into common asphaltic
surfaces like asphalt concrete,
stone mastic or mastic asphalt
either by pre-mixing it with bitumen
(PmB) or simply by adding
it into the mix during the asphalt
production (PmA). Lucobit 1210A
can also be used for industrial asphalt
or binder courses because
of high strains. In research and
development Lucobit 1210A is
viewed as a modern product,
which can be employed in various
special asphalts for stabilis-
top layers that are especially
strained have to be technically
enhanced with regards to their
durability. With budgets being
tight and natural reserves becoming
more rare and therefore
more expensive, future approaches
will result in recycling
and working with increasingly
The additive to polymer modification
_ Technical background
The usability of Lucobit
1210A could
be confirmed again
by scientific research
from registered and
independent institutions
and advantages
comparing to the
established competitors
became evident
(cp. Index- research
in product file folder LUCOBIT AG). Concerning
the constantly growing strain on roads caused
by HGV traffic, it was proven that Lucobit 1210A
increases the resistance against rutting compared
to any other kind of unmodified standard asphalt.
Lucobit 1210A verifiably holds up to the strains of
climatic forces like heat or chill by widening the
range of plasticity of the bitumen, through a significant
rise of the softening point ring and ball
and improved Fraass breaking point. The penetration
of the bitumen decreases accordingly when
adding the Lucobit 1210A.
_ Production and mounting
Lucobit 1210A has a very high thermal stability.
At temperatures up to 300°C, it shows no sign of destruction
of the polymer matrix which leads to sufficient
support for extended production – and transport
periods even after hours of high temperature
exposure.
When adding it directly into the asphalt mix for the
production of PmA, the amount of Lucobit 1210Agranulate
is chosen according to the percentage
wanted (3.0 to 7.5% by mass based on the percentage
of binder while simultaneously reducing the bitumen
as to the percent by weight of the polymer
added). The adding can be done before or after ap-
_ Long-term results
on the composition and batch size
(temperature of mixture is due to
table 5 in ZTV Asphalt-StB 07).
For producing PmB (C) a homogenous
mixture of common bitumen
and Lucobit 1210A is composed
at temperatures between 175 and
195°C. Even with a screw-type agitator
at a low rotation speed a very
thorough mixture of the Lucobit
1210A according to PmB-standards
is detectable under an electron
microscope. The bitumen incorporated
into the polymer matrix
guarantees an easy and rapid
blending of the polymer into the
bitumen or asphalt. For mounting
with Lucobit 1210A modified asphalt,
there is no further requirement
existing.
_ Application with regards to German
rules and regulations
Lucobit 1210A as a composite of bitumen
complies with the technical
requirements of the TL Bitumen-StB
07 as well as with Index 3 for plastomer
modified bitumen (PmB C).
Irrespective of whether the polymer
modified asphalt has been mixed
with PmB (C) or PmA (C), the quality
of the asphalt is increased in a way
that does and will comply the requirements
of the TL Asphalt-StB 07
and ZTV Asphalt-StB 07 and exceeds
considerably those of any other
standard product. This is especially
relevant regarding the rutting on
roads. For even if so far no regulation
concerning a limit of rutting has
been implemented, it could well be
mandatory in the future for constructors
to indicate them under the TL
Asphalt-StB 07.

also be designated as 0/8 S resp. 0/5 S.
Attention
1. Stabilising additives in form of binder carrier, like for example fibres in stone mastic asphalt, can result when using
Lucobit after ZTV-Asphalt StB Chiffre 4.1 to the non. Applicability of the corresponding suitability test and correct
processing.
2. The mixing times for asphalt mixtures after addition of Lucobit is to be matched to the capacity (volume) of the
mixing plant. With a 1 t-mixer, we recommend to lengthen the mixing time by min. 10 sec. If you are using fibres,
refer to the recommendation of the supplier.
3. Lucobit count as binder. The binder content of a reference sample will therefore be the same.
Product Data Sheet Lucobit® 1210A
Product description
Lucobit 1210A is a mixture of ethylene copolymers and special
bitumen. The resulting formulation is a concentrate or
„masterbatch“.
Product properties
Lucobit 1210A consists of thermoplastic polyolefins. Addition
of Lucobit to bitumen increases its viscosity and broadens
the range of plasticity. Although the minimum value of
the Fraass breaking point of Lucobit is as low as for unmodified
standard bitumen, the ring and ball softening point
increases considerably, depending on the proportion of Lucobit
that was added.
Penetration values decline accordingly. Ductility determined
according to DIN EN 12591 decreases, however, the values
ascertained for the so-called ductility at low temperatures
are usually more favourable than those for standard bitumen
without addition of Lucobit.
Product advantages
Compared with other standard binder Lucobit 1210A displays
significant advantages in improving resistance to
deformation. Rut formation tests at high temperatures demonstrated
that asphalt can bear a two- to three-fold load
when modifying it with thermoplastics or altering binder
viscosity by adding Lucobit. This does not impair the lowtemperature
performance of Lucobit 1210A, but rather improves
it.
Applications
Even relatively small amounts of Lucobit 1210A in asphalt
mixtures improve:
resistance to mechanical stress, in particular deformation
and wear
stability / rigidity and reduce the tendency to flow
when hot and under load
low temperature flexibility
ageing behaviour
Examples for application:
s-wearing courses to ZTV-Asphalt - StB
poured asphalt, also on sloping surfaces (ramps)
stone mastic asphalt
special asphalt surfaces, e.g. porous asphalt
thin bituminous wearing courses (hot laying)
18
Processing into PmB
Bitumen is mixed homogeneously with Lucobit 1210A at the
temperatures range 165 °C to 195 °C and is then ready for
use. Depending on mixing intensity, the time required to
mix large quantities (approx. 20 t) is 1 - 3 h. The usage of a
high-speed shear mixing unit leads to a higherquantity of
mixture. The proportion of bitumen already contained in
Lucobit 1210A greatly facilitates the incorporation into bitumen.
Direct addition of Lucobit granules into asphalt
mixes
The required amount of granules (3 to 7.5 % based on the
binder content while simultaneously reducing the bitumen
as to the percent by weight of the polymer added) corresponding
to the desired proportion of Lucobit 1210A is added
batchwise to the asphalt mixer either before or after
adding the binder as usual. The mixing time of any asphalt
Product Data Sheet Lucocell® FG3000
Product description
Lucocell® FG3000 micro grains – cellulose additives for SMA –
Stone Mastic Asphalt or Split Mastic Asphalt, which is used
as finish for all road types, including motorways with high
frequency traffic, fast roads, roads with high traffic loads,
bike paths and sidewalks. Due to their 3D structure, cellulose
fibres maintain a comparatively high viscosity of bitumen,
thus preventing its seepage and formation of asphalt mix
segregation at high temperatures during storage, transport
and SMA placing. At the same time they enable creation of
a thicker bitumen layer around each rock particle, thus preventing
oxidation, moisture penetration and lifting or cracking
of the aggregate.
Lucocell® FG3000 microgranules of cellulose fibre is very
safe and easy in handling. We strongly recommend to pay
attention to the below mentioned aspects of use. The advantage
of microgranules is the quicker distribution in the
mineral mass during dry mixing. Microgranules release
Lucocell® FG3000 fibres easily and safely for increased efficiency
and improved production quality. Lucocell® FG3000
microgranules are ideal for use in automated batching.
Lucocell® FG3000 is a bulky material with advanced properties
and quick and safe dispersion in the asphalt mixer. It can
be added manually or by means of standard dosage systems.
Because of the nature of the product cellulose fibres
may not be exposed to water and mix temperatures higher
than 200°C.
Packaging and Storage
Lucocell® FG3000 is delivered in Big-Bags (500/1000 kg) packed
on wooden pallets, shrink wrapped and additionally
protected with a PE rain cover. Even this packaging protects
the material from rain we recommend dry storage under
roof. Please make sure that the rain cover is placed back on
the material after part of it has been used. Pallets without
damages on the packaging can be stored in the warehouse
in dry condition for 2 years.
20
Dosage
For dosage of Lucocell® FG3000 shall be introduced centrally
into the mixer. The standard dosage rate of cellulose
fibre is 3,0-4,0 kg per ton of asphalt mix. To achieve this
result batch-sized bags, gravimetric or volumetric fibre
blowing systems can be used. A gravimetric system is preferred
for receiving the records about the accurate quantity
of fibres in the mix. If a volumetric system is used, it
shoud be calibrated frequently.
Mixing Sequence
The mircrogranules of Lucocell® FG3000 shall be added centrally
into the mixer approx. 5-15 seconds prior to the addition
of bitumen and even distribution of the fibres in the mix.
In case the fibres are pre-dispersed by means of a automatic
fibre blowing device the dry mixing of the fibres might not
be necessary.
The total mixing time for SMA according to the German recommendations
(Leitfaden Splittmastixasphalt, Dezember
2000) should be minimum 53 seconds. This time includes 8
seconds for discharging the mixer.

Product Data Sheet Lucolast® 7010
03.2012
24
Product Data Sheet Lucolast® 7010
Product description
Lucolast 7010 is a polar copolymer consisting of ethylene
and butyl acrylate with low crystallinity.
Product properties
Addition of Lucolast 7010 to bitumen increases its viscosity
and broadens the range of plasticity. Although the minimum
value of the Fraass breaking point of Lucolast 7010 is
as low as for unmodified standard bitumen, the ring and ball
softening point increases considerably, depending on the
proportion of Lucolast 7010 that was added.
Penetration values decline accordingly. Ductility determined
according to DIN EN 12591 decreases, however, the
values ascertained for the so-called ductility at low temperatures
are usually more favourable than those for standard
bitumen without addition of Lucolast 7010.
Product advantages
Compared with other standard binder Lucolast 7010 displays
significant advantages in improving resistance to deformation.
Rut formation tests at high temperatures demonstrated
that asphalt can bear a two- to three-fold load when modifying
it with thermoplastics or altering binder viscosity by
adding Lucolast 7010. This does not impair the low-temperature
performance of Lucolast 7010, but rather improves it.
Applications
Even relatively small amounts of PmB based on Lucolast
7010 in asphalt mixtures improve:
resistance to mechanical stress, in particular deformation
and wear
stability / rigidity and reduce the tendency to flow when
hot and under load
low temperature flexibility
ageing behaviour
Examples for application:
s-wearing courses to ZTV-Asphalt - StB
poured asphalt, also on sloping surfaces (ramps)
stone mastic asphalt
special asphalt surfaces, e.g. porous asphalt
thin bituminous wearing courses (hot laying)
Processing into PmB
Bitumen is mixed homogeneously with Lucolast 7010 at the
temperatures range 165 °C to 195 °C and is then ready for
use. Depending on mixing intensity, the time required to mix
large quantities (approx. 20 t) is 1 - 3 h. The usage of a highspeed
shear mixing unit leads to a higherquantity of mixture.
In order to avoid a possible phase seperation a continuous
mixing process is required.
Environmental compatibility
Lucolast 7010 is environmentally sound in manufacture and
processing, free of plasticizers and chlorine, and not harmful
to health, water, soils, or plants.
Application of polymer modified asphalt (PmA) at the mixing
unit – Production and installation with Lucobit® 1210A
Delivery of Lucobit® 1210A portioned by the customer
• The picture shows the delivery of the Lucobit® 1210A previously
portioned in Big Bags.
• For the 1.7 t mixing unit in use and the intended bitumen
concentration of approx. 6 M.-%, a dosage of 5 kg Lucobit®
1210A was chosen.
• The apportioning of the Lucobit® 1210A has to be executed
View of the operational platform
• The picture shows three dial gauges. From left to right these
are for indicating the weight of the filler, the aggregate and
the bitumen (marked orange).
• The closed hatch of the mixing vessel is visible
(marked blue).
Adding of Lucobit® 1210A
• The Lucobit® 1210A is added while emptying the aggre gate
scale into the mixing vessel (discharge of dust through the
open hatch).
• At the same time the pre-portioned PE-bag is to be added
into the mixing vessel.
• The PE-bag will dissolve immediately upon contact with the
heat inside the mixing vessel and releases the Lucobit® 1210A.
• The aggregate and the Lucobit® 1210A mix due to the mixing
apparatus and the grinding effect of the hot aggregate.
• The filler is added after the aggregate and the Lucobit® 1210A.
• An amount of approx. 100 kg was requested for the produced
asphalt.
• The bitumen can be added simultaneously with the filler.
• Approx. 105 kg of bitumen were necessary for the production
of this asphalt.
by the customer e.g. in standard PE-bags.
Production details of the
operation platform
• The picture shows the open hatch of the empty mixing
vessel and at the side the measuring unit for the aggregate
being weighed in above the mixing vessel.
• At approximately 1,500 kg the aggregate is emptied into the
mixing vessel, following the produced formulation.
Dry mixture
• The extension of the mixing period due to adding the
Lucobit® 1210A depends on the equipment and should be
tested with a dry mixture (only aggregate and Lucobit® 1210A).
The dry mixture has to be a homogenous mix of the aggregate
and the melted bitumen adhering to the Lucobit® 1210A.
• Under the given circumstances, a mixing period of 45
seconds did suffice. The adding of approx. 10-15 seconds
(depending on the size 1-2 t) to the usual mixing period of
the asphalt mix deviates from normal instructions.
Transferring the batches to the storage facilities
Loading, weighing and covering
Installation by the manufacturer
• Loading of the polymer modified asphalt into the paver
while checking the temperature upon delivery
• Spreading of the asphalt throughout complete installation
width by means of a screw conveyor
• Subsequent installation with rollers
• The temperatures of the asphalt upon delivery and during
rolling have to comply with the norms TL and ZTV Asphalt-StB
42
• Loading of up to eight batches from the storage facilities
onto the truck
• Weighing of the goods up to the axle load limit
• Covering against airflow with loose asphalt mix,
against accelerated short-term ageing (oxidation)
