Type of GHG emissions mitigation action Important conditions under which the methodology is applicable • GHG removal by sinks. CO 2 removal by increasing carbon stocks in the following pools: above-ground biomass, below-ground biomass, and optionally soil organic carbon. • The area does not include organic soils (e.g. peat-lands) or wetlands; • Crops cultivated, if any, are non-perennial crops; • Abandoned agricultural lands are expected to evolve into shrub lands; • The pre-project trees have no potential to reach a crown cover of more than 20% of the threshold tree crown cover reported for CDM definition of forest; • The project activity does not lead to displacement of pre-project activities outside the project boundary, or the increase in GHG emissions due to displacement of pre-project activities is insignificant. Important parameters At validation: • Tree biomass content in baseline; • Allometric equations or volume equations and biomass expansion factors, root-shoot atios, wood density and carbon fraction for each included tree species/species group; • Area of abandoned agricultural land growing into shrub land at project start. BASELINE SCENARIO Lands are either cultivated but degraded or have been abandoned and are expected to be encroached by shrubs. Few trees may be present. PROJECT SCENARIO Forests are planted on lands. Monitored: • Area planted, area cleared of shrubs and area of sample plots; • Diameter, number and possibly height, of planted trees; • Area subjected to burning for site preparation and clearing of harvest residue and forest fires. Lands need not to be degraded. Type of GHG emissions mitigation action Important conditions under which the methodology is applicable • GHG removal by sinks. GHG removal by increasing carbon stocks in the following pools: above-ground biomass, below ground biomass, and optionally: deadwood, litter, and soil organic carbon. • The land subject to the project activity does not fall into wetland category (as defined in “Annex A: Glossary” of the IPCC GPG LULUCF 2003); • Soil disturbance attributable to the A/R CDM project activity does not exceed 10% of area in each of the following types of land, when these lands are included within the project boundary: (a) Land containing organic soils as defined in “Annex A: Glossary” of the IPCC GPG LULUCF 2003; (b) Land which, in the baseline, is subjected to land-use and management practices and receives inputs listed in the methodology (e.g. fertilizers); • The pools selected for accounting of carbon stock changes in the project activity are the same as the pools for accounting of carbon stock changes in the baseline. Important parameters At validation: • Crown cover of trees and shrubs in the baseline at the start of the A/R CDM project activity; • Allometric equations or biomass expansion factors with volume equations, root-shoot ratio and basic wood density. BASELINE SCENARIO Any lands other than wetlands and no forest stands on the lands. PROJECT SCENARIO Forests are planted on lands. Monitored: • Area of shrub biomass strata and crown cover of shrubs; • Area forested (by species); area of sample plots; • Diameter, number and possibly height, of planted trees; • If pools are included: diameter and number of pieces of dead wood, weight of litter; • Area subjected to burning for site preparation and clearing of harvest residue and forest fires.
