the journey begins 

Believing in ones Journey, begins with believing in one- 

self. Each year at Camp Boggy Creek, thousands of seriously ill 

children and family members are guided on a Journey of selfdiscovery 

and love. Hundreds of selfless 

volunteers work with dedicated staff to 

ensure that each child is empowered 

to experience unlimited possibilities 

and opportunities. For one young girl 

and her family, the Journey at Camp 

Boggy Creek became a wonderful 

transformation from being scared and 

angry to acceptance and enlightenment. 

Katie was a goalie on her soccer 

team and had just made the Junior 

Varsity Volleyball team when she was 

diagnosed with epilepsy in the Fall of 

2008. Ironically, her Mom, Barbara, 

was just completing an Epilepsy Retreat application for their family 

because Katie’s brother, Patrick, was also recently diagnosed 

with epilepsy. The Retreat, “was just what we needed,” Barbara 

stated. For Katie, it would help her to find her own special path 

and begin an impressive Journey of self-discovery. 

After attending the Epilepsy summer session, Katie’s 

enthusiasm became contagious as she talked about all the 

different activities that she participated in without restrictions. 

Her tone, however, becomes more modest when she shares how 

believe

she was surrounded by people who genuinely care, appreciate, 

and cherish her and who helped her to believe in herself. She 

states, “The most wonderful thing about Camp Boggy Creek is 

how I am accepted for who I am. I can open up and have a great 

time without having to hold myself back.” 

At the end of each day during camp, Katie and other 

campers would sit on the floor in a circle in their cabin and participate 

in Cabin Chats. This special time not only allows each child 

to share all the fun that happened that day, but it also allows 

each child to participate in discussions that are deeper and more 

personal with empathetic ears listening and sharing similar heartfelt 

stories. Katie describes her Journey by saying, “Camp Boggy 

Creek is what keeps me going, what helps me put one foot in 

front of the other, and to overcome any and all challenges set 

before me.” 

The Journey does not end for Katie or others like her 

when they leave Camp to go home. As Katie said, “When I need 

some Boggy Creek spirit, I only need to hug my Boggy Bear and 

blanket and close my eyes and the spirit wraps itself around me 

and reminds me I can make the best of whatever life throws at 

me.” Her Mom adds, “Katie’s entire life focus has changed 

because of Camp Boggy Creek.” 

Children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses will 

often experience uncertainty and concern, but for those who visit 

Camp Boggy Creek, their Journey will be filled with love and 

respect and a deep belief in themselves.

we remain strong to face the challenge 

Despite a challenging economic year, our programs remain 

strong as ever. During 2009, we reached over 4,000 children and 

family members, either through our summer camp sessions or one 

of our 18 Family Retreat Weekend Programs. Our theme, Believe 

in the Journey, was evident in all of our camp sessions as we 

rededicated ourselves to our mission and focused on our core programs. 

Over 1,000 volunteers gave their time to make 2009 an 

exceptional year for our campers and their families. Along with 

our volunteer counselors, over 200 volunteer medical professionals, 

including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, child life 

specialists and emergency medical technicians created a supportive 

environment for seriously ill children. We are fortunate to have so 

many loyal friends! 

On April 4, 2009, the Camp hosted the 2nd Annual 

Schwarzkopf Society Recognition Luncheon. The Schwarzkopf 

Society was created in honor of General Schwarzkopf and his 

unwavering support of our campers. Under the leadership team of 

Development Committe Chair, Wendy Durden and Society Chair, 

Hugh Durden, Schwarzkopf Society members contributed over 

$700,000 to support seriously ill children. And we are extremely 

grateful to Board member, Dave Pickens, and Olive Garden for 

underwriting the event and providing an outstanding luncheon. 

While we celebrated many accomplishments last year, we 

also experienced immense sadness with the passing of two of our 

inspire

Founders and Board members, Lawrence J. De George and 

Bruce Rossmeyer. They were both champions for our campers 

and we were blessed to have them as a part of the Boggy Creek 

family. 

Larry was an active Board member, serving in leadership 

roles on the Executive Committee and Finance Committee. 

His desire to help seriously ill children experience the joy of camp 

was steadfast. We are honored to have Larry’s son, Lawrence F. 

De George join our Board of Directors. Larry and his wife, 

Suzanne, have been involved with the camp for many years 

and it is a pleasure to welcome them to the Boggy Creek family. 

Last October, the tradition of the annual Ride for Children 

continued as a tribute to Bruce Rossmeyer and celebration 

of the 15th year of raising funds to support our campers. 

Bruce’s wife, Sandy, and their children, Mandy, Wendy, Shelly, 

Will and Randy will continue his legacy of giving back to help 

those less fortunate. 

Thanks to our donors, volunteers and dedicated staff 

the Journey at Camp continued even in difficult times, providing 

strength, courage, hope and determination to thousands of 

children. On behalf of our Founders and Board of Directors, 

we are forever grateful to you for believing in our mission, giving 

your time, and investing financially to improve the lives of 

seriously ill children and their families. We hope you will continue 

to to be part of this life-changing journey.

Camp Boggy Creek is the only multi-disease, therapeutic 

camp in Florida offering programs at no charge to children or 

their families. Meeting the needs of each 

child from 14 illness groups requires the 

expert and compassionate care of hundreds 

of dedicated medical volunteers 

who help in countless ways. Whether it 

is a child life specialist who helps refer 

eligible children, or a doctor or nurse 

who volunteers for a week or weekend, 

or a partner who helps to organize 

transportation to Camp, our Healthcare 

Partners and medical professionals are 

invaluable to helping seriously ill children 

discover and Believe in their Journey. 

Also, for every medical volunteer 

who gives their time at Camp, there are 

many more working behind the scenes to ensure that every child 

has the time of their life. 

For Brenda Phillips, who has a Master’s Degree in 

Social Work, Camp Boggy Creek is a “special place where her 

heart kids (from Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami) discover 

themselves in a place of love and respect.” For years, Brenda had 

referred many of Miami-Dade County’s most seriously ill children 

and although she had never been to Camp, her contributions 

helped many to discover a unique place where magic happens. 

In 2009, Brenda’s role changed from caregiver to camper parent

when she and her family attended a Spina Bifida Retreat after her 

daughter turned seven years old and was accepted to attend camp.

Campers, family members, staff, and volunteers greeted 

over 100 guests at Camp Boggy Creek’s 2 nd Annual Schwarzkopf 

Society Recognition Luncheon on Saturday, April 4. The day was 

a celebration and recognition of Schwarzkopf Society members 

who contributed a minimum of $10,000 (in 2008) to support 

Camp Boggy Creek’s mission. 

One of the many highlights was when Boggy Creek 

campers sang a couple of their favorite camp songs before 

welcoming fellow camper and featured speaker, Kyle Coon to 

share his personal and inspiring story. Kyle Coon first attended 

Camp Boggy Creek in 1999 at the recommendation of his 

doctors at Nemours Children’s Clinic in Jacksonville. He had been 

diagnosed with bilateral sporadic retinoblastoma (a rare cancer 

that affects the retina) at 10 months old and by the age of seven, 

he had lost his sight. Kyle’s determination, however, to live as 

normally as possible never wavered. At eight years of age and at 

the encouragement of his new friend, Erik Weihenmayer (the first 

blind man to climb and summit the tallest peaks in each of the 

seven continents), Kyle began competing in rock climbing 

championships in Florida. Since then, the 17-year old climber has 

reached many goals including the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, 

the highest mountain in Africa, and the Ankascocha Trail into 

Machu Picchu. 

Kyle shared several examples of his camp experience at 

Boggy Creek, including some of his favorite activities such as 

performing in the theater during “Stage Day” and Silly Olympics. 

He shared “it was the most fun I had ever had” and added 

“these were things I’d never done before, and, most important, 

I gained self-confidence.”

Kyle attributed his years attending Camp Boggy Creek for helping to instill in 

him the determination and resolve to reach for the stars and to know that he 

can do anything! Members of The Schwarzkopf Society are committed to

overcome obstacles and, like Kyle, reach their own personal summit.

Bruce Rossmeyer 

“Accelerate Your Dreams!” Bruce Rossmeyer placed 

this quote over the entrance to his Daytona Harley-Davidson 

dealership. While the meaning is clear to most who enter his shop, 

those who knew him well knew that his 

meaning lay in his belief that everyone 

has the right to his or her dreams, 

especially children who may be afraid 

to try. The “big man with the big heart,” 

Bruce Rossmeyer, will always be remembered 

for helping Florida’s most seriously 

ill children to believe in their Journey 

and themselves. 

As a Founder and Board member 

of Camp Boggy Creek, Bruce committed 

his success, influence, time, and talents to 

the cause of enriching the lives of children 

with chronic or life-threatening 

illnesses. In 1995, he took his love for 

motorcycles to the road when he began the first Daytona Harley- 

Davidson Ride for Children to raise money for Camp Boggy Creek 

and in 15 years, he helped raise almost $4 million dollars for 

Florida’s only multi-disease, therapeutic, year-round camp. 

Bruce Rossmeyer’s generous contributions to the community 

were always done without the revelry and celebrations 

synonymous with the many bike events that he helped organize. 

On the contrary, Bruce Rossmeyer preferred the benefactors 

of his philanthropy, especially children, to take the spotlight and 

dream

center stage, because, as Bruce would say, “it’s all about the 

kids.” On July 30, 2009, Camp Boggy Creek and the 

community lost a dear friend and true philanthropist in a tragic 

motorcycle accident. Bruce will always be remembered for his 

dedication to continuing Boggy Creek’s mission of compassion, 

its legacy of caring, and its commitment to give a “week of 

normal” to seriously ill children. 

Bruce Rossmeyer’s commitment to improving the 

lives of children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses was 

unequalled. His philanthropic endeavors benefited many 

children’s organizations and in 2007 he received the prestigious 

Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Outstanding Philanthropist 

award. Following the altruistic lessons taught to him by his 

mentor, the late Jim Moran, Bruce believed with conviction that 

each individual, each dollar and each action could make a significant 

difference and he received his greatest reward knowing that 

his good fortune was helping others. 

Over 1,200 friends attended the 15 th Annual Ride for 

Children and while the event was no doubt a success, the 

noticeable absence of the Ride’s founder and biggest supporter 

made the day somewhat surreal. Bruce’s wife, Sandy, and their 

five children (Mandy, Wendy, Randy, Shelly and Will) took the 

stage and graciously thanked all the supporters for their commitment 

and announced that Bruce’s legacy and the Ride will 

continue in his memory and will from hereon be known as the 

Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for Children.

member and Founder passed away on April 13, 2009. He first 

became involved with the Camp in 1997 when he participated in 

a fishing tournament hosted by General H. Norman Schwarzkopf 

to benefit Boggy Creek. It was then that Larry would not only 

learn of the Camp’s mission, but also dedicate his time and 

resources to making it a success. General Schwarzkopf recalls 

“Larry became involved with Camp because of what we do for 

kids and his influence as a Board member has been profound. 

We owe a great deal to his extraordinary vision — encouraging 

growth and sustainability of the Camp programs.” 

Larry De George began his career in the early days of 

cable television after serving in the Navy during World War II. 

His success came in New York City where he rose to be CEO of 

Times Wire and Cable, a major supplier of cable in that industry. 

After retiring in 1980, he continued to apply his entrepreneurial 

skills and enjoyed great success as a venture capitalist. Pat Cooper, 

Chairman of the Board stated, “Larry was an active Board member 

and brought skills he used successfully in the 

private sector to the Camp. We’re thankful for his guidance and 

unwavering support.” 

Over the years, Larry and his wife, Florence, received 

numerous awards for their philanthropic endeavors to help 

children’s charities. In 1998, Camp Boggy Creek welcomed Larry 

and Florence as Founders, a special group of friends who have 

contributed over $1 million. They joined The Schwarzkopf Society 

as Charter members, at the highest level, Four Stars, when it was 

initiated in 2007. 

The Camp’s main street is appropriately named 

“De George Blvd.” Each year Larry made several trips to the 

Camp for Board meetings and other events and always made 

time to visit with campers who held a special place in his heart. 

His presence is missed, but his legacy will continue giving 

to Florida’s most seriously ill children and their families at 

Camp Boggy Creek.

A Day of Remembrance 

Each year, Camp Boggy Creek receives many gifts in memory of loved ones who were touched by the magic of our mission. In October, Camp 

Boggy Creek held its first Day of Remembrance to celebrate the spirit of these endearing and heartfelt gifts and the people with whom they were 

made in memory of. Friends and family were invited to participate in the Day of Remembrance at Camp or, if not able to attend, participate in a 

special moment of silence from wherever they may be. The Remembrance Reading included over 300 names and attending guests were invited 

to inscribe their loved ones’ names on stones that were placed in a special garden area. For more information on the 2010 Day of Remembrance,

Medical Volunteers 

Camp Boggy Creek provides life-changing experiences to hundreds of Florida’s 

most seriously ill children. Our programs would not be possible without the 

passionate dedication, remarkable skills and selfless time given during each summer 

session and family retreat by our medical volunteers. In 2009, over 150 doctors, 

nurses, pharmacists, and therapists contributed over 13,000 volunteer hours!
