Senior Editor
About Wiener Urtext Edition
Wiener Urtext Edition is a highly acclaimed critical edition of musical works from the
baroque to the early modern period. The musical text itself is edited by experienced musicologists
from all available sources such as – autograph manuscripts, first editions, copyists’
manuscripts and engravers’ copies. In some cases, this material is given thorough
analysis for the first time.
The extensive notes provided include: information about the work, its genesis and the
significance of its place in musical history as well as the methods applied to the editorial
work. Despite their necessary briefness, the critical notes clearly account for editorial
decisions and with reference back to the sources.

Content: 8 Polonaises App. G1, Pictures
Fingerings and Notes on interpretation:
Grade: 3-4
UT 50079
will be released in June 2008
Although Robert Schumann absolutely loved
to play a duet, he wrote only few works for
piano duet. Created in 1848, Pictures from
the East Op. 66 was one of the best-known
and most frequently played works in the
piano duet literature until the 20 th century.
But the Polonaises Op. 3 by the 18-yearold
composer following the example of
Franz Schubert and even exceeding him in
harmonic boldness and tonal ingenuity
already showed the self-taught Schumann
was on the way to his own style. After
volume 1 which contains the easier works
composed for music teaching purposes,
volume 2 now contains the charming,
yet hardly known Ballszenen Op. 109 in
addition to the two above mentioned works.
ROBERT SCHUMANN
Works for piano 4 hands
- Volume 1
Content: 12 four-handed Piano Pieces for
Children Large and Small Op. 85, Children’s
Ball Op. 130, Easy four handed Piano Piece,
Op. 85 App.
Editor: Joachim Draheim
Fingerings and Notes on interpretation:
Noriko Ishikawa, Manfred Kratzer
Grade: 2-4
UT 50078 already published
Robert Schumann’s intention to create
valuable and, with regard to didactics,
sensibly created music for children and
young people was not limited to the worldfamous
Album for the Young Op. 68. Apart
from Liederalbum for the Young Op. 79,
he also created two works which should
encourage four-handed piano playing which
was very popular in 19 th -century domestic
music: the progressively arranged 12 fourhanded
Piano Pieces for Children Large and
Small Op. 85 and Childrens’s Ball Op. 130
which put the six easy dance movements
together into a charming archaic suite.
NEW PUBLICATIONS • VIOLONCELLO SOLO
JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH
Suite I G major BWV 1007
for violoncello solo
Editor: Ulrich Leisinger
Grade: 3
UT 50260
The separate edition of the first Suite
for violoncello solo by Johann Sebastian
Bach contains the musical text of the well-
regarded Wiener Urtext edition with the
complete six cello suites of Bach by Ulrich
Leisinger. Thanks to new findings on the
transmission, Leisinger managed to re-
evaluate the sources which did not leave
the structure of the musical text and the
associated delicate problem of the slurs
untouched. His re-evaluation gave reasons
for a stronger emancipation from the manu-
script copy of Anna Magdalena Bach which
had always been cited as main source
until then though it was very unreliable
with regard to the articulation; thus the new
edition leads to more convincing solutions.
The present separate edition is the perfect
starting point to study Bach’s suites for
violoncello solo.
NEW PUBLICATIONS • VIOLONCELLO & PIANO
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
Sonatas for Violoncello and Piano
Content: Sonatas Op. 5,1-2; Op. 69;
Op. 102,1-2; Appendix: Sonata Op. 17
(Horn Sonata arranged for violoncello
and piano by the composer)
UT 50247
With his sonatas for violoncello and piano,
Beethoven laid the foundations for a totally
new chamber music genre which inspired
subsequent composers such as Johannes
Brahms and Richard Strauss among others.
The present edition is based on a strong
examination of all relevent sources. This
volume also contains the cello version of
the Horn Sonata Op. 17 the alternative
instrumentation of which can be regarded
as absolutely authentic according to recent
research. The edition is additionally pro-
vided with historical comments on the
cello sonatas by Carl Czerny and notes
on textual problems and interpretation by
Heinrich Schiff. The latter are printed
within the separate violoncello part and thus
available to the violoncellist any time. In the
separate violoncello part the music arrangement
is optimized to eliminate problems of
page turning.
ANTONIO VIVALDI
The Complete Sonatas for Violoncello
and Basso continuo
Editor: Bernhard Moosbauer
Notes on interpretation:
Gerhart Darmstadt
Piano score with a realized figured bass,
parts: violoncello solo and basso continuo
(figured bass not realized)
Grade: 3
UT 50175
The nine sonatas by Antonio Vivaldi are
among the most famous cello works of
the Baroque era. Thanks to their moderate
technical demands, the pieces are an integral
part of music lessons as well as of private
music-making. But even for the professional
ancient music scene, they form a focus
of the cello repertoire. The new edition of
the Wiener Urtext Edition serves the needs
and demands of all three target groups alike,
providing a reliable musical text which is
no longer based on the unauthorized first
Paris edition by Le Clerc & Boivin but
on a copy from Naples revised by Vivaldi
himself as well as on two other manuscripts
associated with the composer from the
Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and the
music library of the Counts of Schönborn
at Wiesentheid. More detailed information
on the performance practice is provided
in the notes on interpretation by Gerhart
Darmstadt which are based on contemporary
sources.
