Vol. 54 No. 9 * March 2012 * Temple Emanuel Bulletin Page 12 Community Opportunities & News Community Workday B’NAI SHALOM NEWS The Hebrew Cemetery located at the corner of High Point Road and Vanstory Street is owned by Temple Emanuel, but serves the entire Jewish community. Over the years, many of the headstones have become discolored with tree droppings and pollution. Since this is not part of the weekly maintenance, people are needed to clean these stones. This is a family-friendly activity and a great way to teach our children Jewish values and explain Jewish life cycles while fulfilling one of our tradition's highest mitzvot, caring for the dead. A community workday is planned for Sunday, March 18, at 1:30 pm, with lunch at a local eatery close to the cemetery so that families can participate right after religious school without having to go home first. Are you thinking about Jewish summer camp for your child this year? JFS has needs-based partial scholarships available to help send children and teens in our community to approved Jewish summer camps. Application deadline is Feb. 29. JELF loan applications open March 1 and close April 15 at www.jelf.org. These are interest free loans for post-secondary education for Jewish young people in our community who qualify for financial assistance. Music Committee Happenings The Temple Emanuel Music Committee supports a variety of musical programming, including professional, volunteer and youth choirs, holiday concerts and special Sabbath services. Please show your support by contributing to the Pearl Music Fund. The second in the Open Door Music Series, "Funny Valentines," was held on February 12. Elena Kuschnerova on the piano, Janet Orenstein on violin and Brook Whitehouse on the cello shared the stage with guest bassist Paul Sharpe and violinist Sheila Browne. It was a fun and uplifting musical evening and enjoyed by all. Part three of the series will be held on April 1 at the Greene Street campus. The concerts are free and open to the community. The Music Committee acknowledges the passing of Dorothy (Dot) Pearl Hamburger, 93, eldest of four children of Kate and Charles Pearl, whose family established the Pearl Music Fund in 1995. Our sincere condolences go out to the family. Pick up a copy of our CD of High Holiday music, entitled “Bless This Year,” available in the Temple gift shop for $18. Proceeds benefit future musical programming at Temple Emanuel. We are working on additional 2012 music programming. Please stay tuned for further announcements. Enrollment for 2012-2013 Enrollment is now open for the 2012- 2013 school year. Financial assistance is available to qualifying families for Grades K-8. Parents, faculty, alumni and friends of B‟nai Shalom enjoyed the Casino Royale Cadillac Dinner on January 28 at Temple Emanuel. The gala, chaired by Tracy Lurey and Jen Strasser, is a major fundraiser for B‟nai Shalom. Over 200 attendees enjoyed an evening of casino, auction, dancing, good food and fun! The Adult Center for Enrichment (ACE) is here to help! ACE is a non-profit agency that offers support to older adults and their caregivers in the community with four services. ACE has three Group Respite Program sites; I told you in the January article about the program at Temple. ACE offers three certified Adult Day Centers. These centers offer lunch, activities, and a nurse on site at least four hours a day and enable a caregiver to work. CarePartners at Home offer a caregiver a few hours a week to recharge his/her energy. There is no cost to the family for this wonderful service. Lastly, ACE offers ongoing Caregiver Education sessions at no charge. Professional staff can also speak to community/professional organizations. Each session explores what the Jewish tradition teaches us about parenting. As one mom put it: “The stories highlighted in the class are relevant to my life.
