Vol. 54 No. 9 * March 2012 * Temple Emanuel Bulletin Page 6 ALL abou abou tt March Tot Shabbat Schedule (2nd and 4th Fridays at 6:00pm, at Jefferson Road) March 9 & March 23 (Shabbat Mishpacha) The Early Childhood Engagement Center at Temple Emanuel is currently enrolling children for the 2012 – 2013 school year. There are three and five-day options for children ages 18 months – 5 years. Please contact Louise Van Schaack for more information. March is a wonderful month filled with great events for families with young children! I hope you will join us on one or more of the following dates. On Sunday, March 4, come to Temple at 9:00 a.m. for a delicious pancake breakfast. The Early Childhood Engagement Center will serve up pancakes, fruit and coffee prior to Religious School. You do not need to attend religious school in order to join us for breakfast, but please note that breakfast ends at 9:30 when Religious school starts. Breakfast is $5.00 per person or $15.00 per family. All proceeds go to the pre-school scholarship fund. If you are not a morning person, the next event is for you and your family. Join us Saturday, March 10 at 6:00p.m. for Havdalah. Bring your children to Temple and celebrate this beautiful tradition marking the end of Shabbat. We will sing, dance, hear stories, make a craft and eat a snack. Havdalah is a wonderful time to celebrate with your family. Please join us! And finally, on the weekend of March 23-25, join us for a weekend filled with song and ruach (spirit). Sheldon Low, a Jewish singer/song leader will spend the weekend at Temple Emanuel. He will join us on Friday night for Shabbat Mishpacha, Saturday night for Havdalah and a teen concert, and on Sunday for Religious School and a young family concert. Tickets for this final concert at 1:00 on Sunday are $9.00 per ticket. Many of you may already have Sheldon Low‟s music in your house. His CDs, It’s All Challah to Me and Look At Me, are part of the PJ Library. You can listen to Sheldon‟s music on his website Sheldonlow.com or check out www.jewishrockradio.com. New this year, a special ―Pizza and PJ Party‖ for children (ages 2-12 yrs) during Spring Mix so Mom and Dad can enjoy the evening. Hosted by Elizabeth & Matthew Applebaum. our our Y O U T H B’NAI MITZVAH Tracy and Scott Valentine cordially invite the congregation to join them for Shabbat morning services on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 10:30am, when their daughter, Kelsey, will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah. Kelsey is a seventh grader at Northwest Middle School. She is the sister of Natalie and Jason Valentine and the granddaughter of Sharon and Jim Lowery and Ida and John Valentine. The congregation is invited to an Oneg following Friday night‟s service and Kiddush Luncheon in Kelsey‟s honor following the Bat Mitzvah service on Saturday morning. In late January, High School students from Temple Emanuel and Beth David Synagogue attended the 2012 L’Taken Social Justice Seminar in DC. The 19 participants (12 from Temple Emanuel) spent three days learning about public policy issues and another day on Capitol Hill lobbying our Congressional representative. Rabbi Andy Koren and Andy Schlosberg (Temple’s Youth Director) chaperoned this trip together with Boaz Avraham-Katz from Beth David. Purim Page 7 Purim is by far the silliest of the Jewish holidays. We dress up and let loose. Yet, Purim is also one of the most serious days on the Jewish calendar. The story told in the megillah (the scroll of Esther) revolves around a plot to destroy all Jews. Shushan is in Persia, far from the land of Israel and the security that we sometimes take for granted in our own time. Purim is filled with lessons for all ages and stages of life. It also provides a full experience for our senses. Sight: We dress up as kings, queens, princes and princesses. What a delight for our eyes! More on this later… Taste: We are commanded to eat a festive meal on Purim in honor of how Esther and Mordechai foiled Haman‟s evil scheme. And, as the song says, we “nosh some Hamantaschen.” Smell: Not only do Hamantaschen taste great; the smell they give off as they bake is nothing short of divine. That is why Purim is the Jewish “gift-giving” holiday. Our custom is to give two types of gifts: mishloach manot (Purim treats) to our friends and matanot la-evyonim (gifts to the poor) to those who might otherwise go without. What does this say about how we as Jews celebrate? Sound: Everyone should hear the reading of the Purim story each year. We gather as a community for this public reading. This year, our reading for adults will take place at Temple on Wednesday night, March 7 th at 6 PM; our reading for children will take place on Sunday morning, March 11 th at 9:30 AM (on the day of our Purim Carnival) at the start of Religious School. And who can forget the sound of the ra-ashanim (groggers) and the cheers for Esther and Mordechai as we tell the Purim story? The 6th Sense: What we see (and what we don‟t see) is rarely the whole story. Let me explain. God‟s name does not appear in the book of Esther. God is literally hidden from sight. At the start of the story, Esther hides from the King that she is Jewish. However, just like the story of the Exodus, God plays a central role in the Purim story. Similarly, it is hard to find a hero as great as Esther. Things aren‟t always as they seem. Perhaps that is why we wear masks and costumes on Purim. We know that we are more than what meets the eye. We are blessed souls created in God‟s image and capable of making the world a better place for all. Happy Purim!
