FROM THE PRESIDENT…
Spring Mix is just right
If you are like me, you can‟t believe
that spring is almost upon us, but here it
is! Although our winter has been mild,
we welcome the change in season and
the hope that it holds for us. It is at this
time of year that we also start thinking of
Temple Emanuel‟s Spring Mix
fundraiser, an annual event that ushers in warmer, sunnier
weather and allows our Temple family to get together. This
unique experience allows us to strengthen our Jewish bonds
and do some real good for our Temple finances.
Over the years, the TE Spring Fundraisers have taken on
several forms, and were successful at raising money for the
Temple‟s General Operating Fund. The General Operating
Fund is used to run our programs, provide staff salaries, pay
the bills and demands that we face as part of our usual
operations. The Spring Fundraiser is separate from other
fundraisers. It is the largest of its kind and is held every
year. (Note: the Jewish Festival is held every other
year). Our Spring Mix is built into our budget at the
beginning of the year. It is not extra money that we raise for
special or unanticipated events, programs or
contingencies. In fact, if we don‟t generate what the budget
calls for, we fall short of making ends meet. It is an
important event for us, and we can‟t emphasize enough,
how much we depend on the generosity of our Temple
Emanuel family to make it a success.
Once again the Spring Fundraiser will be held as a series
of events, dinners, and parties celebrating all kinds of
moments. These separate events are unified by the March
17 th Kickoff celebration. Details have been sent to all of you
and new information will be sent to your mail and email
in-boxes as we move through the season. The committee
that has planned the Kickoff and all of the other events is
chaired by Janie Silvers. The committee members are:
Wendee Cutler, Diane Goldstein, Sheryl Miller, Renee
Miller, Jessie Melamed, Stacey Papier, Ellen Sheridan,
Tracy Simon and Tracy & Scott Valentine. They have done
a remarkable job so far and will continue to make this year‟s
Spring Mix the best one ever.
We are also looking for sponsors for the Kickoff. The
generosity of individual and corporate sponsors makes
Spring Mix a success. Please consider a $250, $500 or
$1,000 level sponsorship (all levels include tickets to the
Kickoff). Contact Jessie or Laura in the Temple office for
details.
What I like most about our Spring Mix format is that it‟s a
fantastic fund-raising function that gives our Temple family
what we need and what we want.
Please help us strengthen our bonds as a Temple Emanuel
family and join us. If you have not signed up to attend the
Kickoff or one or more of the individual events that follow
through the months of April and May, please be sure to do
so at once. I look forward to seeing you there!
FROM RABBI GUTTMAN
Rabbi Gunther Plaut, one of the greatest
and most scholarly rabbis of the twentieth
century, died last month. He was
99 years old. Among other things, Gunther
will be remembered for his incredible
commentary on the Torah, a commentary
which is still used to this day by many
liberal Jews, including our Chevra Torah study group.
I think that it was in 2003 that Gunther Plaut posted on the
Rabbinical List Serve that he was aggravated that he had
aged out of being asked his opinion about anything. I could
really feel his pain. Here was one of the most brilliant rabbis
of his generation, who had already outlived most of his
peers, feeling as though he was being ignored!
So I wrote an email and invited him to come to
Greensboro. He accepted almost immediately, and asked
me to call him. When I called him he asked me if it was
acceptable that he be accompanied by a “lady companion.”
Actually, I thought that it was cute. At that time Gunther
was 90 and was 40 years older than me.
Shortly thereafter, I got a call from his son, Rabbi Jonathan
Plaut. Jonathan asked me if I knew that his dad was
suffering from the onset of dementia. I said that I did not
and asked Jonathan if this was a good idea. Jonathan said
that it was a good idea as long as I knew what we were
getting into. I asked him for advice and he said that
sometimes, his dad just needs to be verbally nudged by a
comment or a question. He felt that Gunther‟s ability to do a
straight lecture was not good.
Understanding these limitations, I accepted. Gunther‟s
lady friend was none other than Janice Rothschild who had
been married to Jacob Mortimer Rothschild (1022-1973),
the esteemed rabbi of The Temple in Atlanta. Rabbi
Rothschild had been a passionate advocate for Civil Rights
and was the rabbi at The Temple when it was bombed in
1958.
Janice took great care of Gunther and did so in a most
loving way. It was clear to all that he absolutely adored her
and loved being with her.
On March 7, 2003 Gunther read during our Friday night
services and did fine. However, on Saturday morning at
Torah study, I immediately understood what Jonathan was
trying to tell me. Gunther really could not teach this class.
However, if I asked him a question or to interpret a
particular verse, out from someplace in the depths of his
mind came incredible pearls of wisdom! I became a
“Barbara Walters” character, interviewing Gunther about
the Torah portion.
The reaction of the Chevra Torah participants was
wonderful, and the Torah study session was a smashing
success! Most all came back in the afternoon for the
Seudah Shelishit and Havdalah. I continued the interview
style and we quickly began to learn all about his early life
and his war experiences.
Page 5 Events at Temple
Rabbi Guttman’s article continued…
In April of 1945, he was part of the group which liberated Nordhausen. According to Gunther, he found numerous bodies
which were in need of a Jewish burial. He went to his commanding officer and asked for permission to force the people of the
town to bury the dead. The commanding officer said to Gunther that he had the full force of the US Army behind him in this
task.
Later that afternoon Gunther went to the mayor of the town and told him what needed to be done. The mayor replied that such
a task was “inhumane,” by which he meant “gross and disgusting” for the people who would be doing the burials. Many of
these bodies were badly decayed and the stench was horrible.
Gunther then said to us something amazing. He told us that he pulled a pistol on the mayor, held it to his head and told him
that if every able-bodied man from the town was not at the town square at 8 am the next day, he (Gunther) would hunt him
down like the dog that he (the mayor) was and he (Gunther) would put a bullet in his head.
People‟s mouths dropped in shock! I remember feeling so much love and respect for him at that moment. I had never spent
any time with him before that weekend, and this may have been the last time he was a visiting scholar. I am not sure.
Gunther went on to tell us of the incredible thirst that the survivors had for Jewish religious items. In his opinion, they seemed
to want these items more than they wanted food!
Our congregation loved that weekend with Gunther. He brought to us, even at his advanced age and slightly limited mental
capacity, a sense not only of his brilliance, but also of his humanity. I realized that I could never be as brilliant as Gunther, but I
hoped that in some way, I could strive to be as dedicated to the Jewish people as Gunther was. He was both an inspiration and a
role model for me!
It‟s hard to believe that his visit was nine years ago. I once heard that when a soul leaves a body in which it has been severely
limited, it recreates emotionally the joy that the Jewish people felt upon our liberation from Egypt. Gunther‟s holy neshamah
has now experienced its liberation!
Many in our Chevra Torah still remember our time with him. May his memory continue to be an inspiration and a blessing!
Concentration Camp Liberator, Alan Moskin, to speak at Temple Emanuel
Thursday, March 22, 7pm
Alan Moskin served in General Patton's army and liberated a concentration camp. As a Jewish soldier he
was a representative of the Jewish people in the fight against Nazism.
Also, as a Jewish liberator, he was sensitive to the Jews he liberated and gave them hope and pride. What is
most remarkable about Mr. Moskin is that he is a passionate speaker who, in his words, will speak to any
group, no matter how large or small, anywhere. He speaks about his experiences as a young soldier, bears
witness for those he helped free and for his buddies who were killed in the line of duty. His historical account
is detailed and moving. Mr. Moskin, because of what he witnessed as a soldier and liberator, works on
behalf of the Holocaust Center and for Human rights. This program is open to the community.
Senior Passover Luncheon, Thursday, March 22, 12:00pm
Temple Emanuel
This event is sponsored by The Friendship Circle of Temple Emanuel, Vatikim of Beth David
Synagogue, and Jewish Family Services, and is also partially funded by the BJH Foundation for Senior
Services. Our corporate sponsor this year is Abbotswood at Irving Park, a Kisco Senior Living
Community.
At the Senior Passover Luncheon, between 120 and 150 of our seniors come together for fellowship,
holiday celebration, and a delicious festive meal. For many of our seniors, especially those in assisted living and skilled care
facilities, this may be the only holiday celebration and contact with other Jewish people they will have during this season.
If you are available to volunteer your time on Thursday, March 22 from 10:00am – 1:30pm, please let Brenda know. In
exchange for your service, you will enjoy a Seder with our clergy, a delicious meal and the company of wonderful
people. Reservations are required, please call Brenda in the Temple Office at 292-7899.
With All Our Senses... Purim
Page 7
Purim is by far the silliest of the Jewish
holidays. We dress up and let loose. Yet,
Purim is also one of the most serious days
on the Jewish calendar. The story told in
the megillah (the scroll of Esther) revolves around a plot to
destroy all Jews. Shushan is in Persia, far from the land of
Israel and the security that we sometimes take for granted in
our own time. Purim is filled with lessons for all ages and
stages of life. It also provides a full experience for our
senses.
Sight: We dress up as kings, queens, princes and
princesses. What a delight for our eyes! More on this
later…
Taste: We are commanded to eat a festive meal on Purim
in honor of how Esther and Mordechai foiled Haman‟s evil
scheme. And, as the song says, we “nosh some
Hamantaschen.”
Smell: Not only do Hamantaschen taste great; the smell
they give off as they bake is nothing short of divine. For a
great article on Hamantaschen, including recipes visit:
http://reformjudaismmag.org/Articles/index.cfm?id=1114
Touch: Once Haman had been defeated, Esther made a rule
that we should give gifts on Purim. That is why Purim is the
Jewish “gift-giving” holiday. Our custom is to give two
types of gifts: mishloach manot (Purim treats) to our friends
and matanot la-evyonim (gifts to the poor) to those who
might otherwise go without. What does this say about how
we as Jews celebrate?
Sound: Everyone should hear the reading of the Purim
story each year. We gather as a community for this public
reading. This year, our reading for adults will take place at
Temple on Wednesday night, March 7 th at 6 PM; our reading
for children will take place on Sunday morning, March 11 th
at 9:30 AM (on the day of our Purim Carnival) at the start of
Religious School. And who can forget the sound of the
ra-ashanim (groggers) and the cheers for Esther and
Mordechai as we tell the Purim story?
The 6th Sense: What we see (and what we don‟t see) is
rarely the whole story. Let me explain. God‟s name does
not appear in the book of Esther. God is literally hidden
from sight. At the start of the story, Esther hides from the
King that she is Jewish. However, just like the story of the
Exodus, God plays a central role in the Purim
story. Similarly, it is hard to find a hero as great as
Esther. Things aren‟t always as they seem. Perhaps that is
why we wear masks and costumes on Purim. We know that
we are more than what meets the eye. We are blessed souls
created in God‟s image and capable of making the world a
better place for all. Happy Purim!

Dear Fred,
I am grateful to Temple Emanuel for its contribution to the tribute book that honors me on my retirement
from the Union. I really appreciate your leadership’s thoughtfulness at this important time in my life. The
Biennial was exciting and exhilarating, and I was both touched by the tributes to me and very pleased by the
support for our Campaign for Youth Engagement.
I remember with great fondness my visits to Temple Emanuel and my participation in your building
dedication. Thanks for all that you do for Reform Judaism.
Best regards, Rabbi Eric Yoffie
ECO-MITZVOT- Monthly Tips on Green Living
"Be mindful not to spoil and destroy my world.
If you do so no one will repair it."
Midrash Kohelet Rabbah , VII
One of the easiest and most effective ways
of reducing our impact on climate change is to
simply change some light bulbs. Many of us
have already started using those curly compact
fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) in our homes and
workplaces because we understand that they
dramatically reduce our carbon footprints and
power bills. In fact, they use one-third the
energy and last ten times longer than standard
light bulbs, so they easily pay for themselves. If
every U.S. home replaced just one bulb, it
would reduce green house gas pollution
equivalent to removing a million cars from the
road.
In fact, Duke Energy will even help you get
started by sending you a box of free CFLs!
Order yours at www.duke-energy.com/freecfls/
A concern often expressed about using CFLs
is how to safely dispose of them (once they
finally burn out) as they do contain a trace
amount of mercury. The answer: take them to
any Home Depot to safely recycle them. We
even have a collection box at Temple Emanuel,
to make it even easier. So, go ahead and
brighten your life, your home, and the earth’s
future in one easy step – change a bulb!
Community Workday
B’NAI SHALOM NEWS
The Hebrew Cemetery located at the
corner of High Point Road and Vanstory
Street is owned by Temple Emanuel, but
serves the entire Jewish community. Over
the years, many of the headstones have
become discolored with tree droppings
and pollution.
Since this is not part of the weekly maintenance, people are
needed to clean these stones. This is a family-friendly activity and
a great way to teach our children Jewish values and explain
Jewish life cycles while fulfilling one of our tradition's highest
mitzvot, caring for the dead.
A community workday is planned for Sunday, March 18, at
1:30 pm, with lunch at a local eatery close to the cemetery so
that families can participate right after religious school without
having to go home first.
If you, or someone you know, might be interested in helping,
please contact Lia Lewis at lialewis@triad.rr.com, (336) 423-7383
for more information.
Are you thinking about Jewish summer camp for your child
this year? JFS has needs-based partial scholarships available to
help send children and teens in our community to approved
Jewish summer camps. Application deadline is Feb. 29.
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of need. We urge
families to apply early! Contact Betsy Gamburg at 852-4829,
ext. 225 or at bgamburg@shalomgreensboro.org for more
information.
JELF loan applications open March 1 and close April 15
at www.jelf.org. These are interest free loans for
post-secondary education for Jewish young people in our
community who qualify for financial assistance. For more
information, contact Betsy Gamburg at 852-4829, ext. 225
or bgamubrg@shalomgreensboro.org.
Music Committee Happenings
The Temple Emanuel Music Committee supports a variety of
musical programming, including professional, volunteer and youth
choirs, holiday concerts and special Sabbath services. Please show your
support by contributing to the Pearl Music Fund.
The second in the Open Door Music Series, "Funny Valentines," was
held on February 12. Elena Kuschnerova on the piano, Janet Orenstein
on violin and Brook Whitehouse on the cello shared the stage with guest
bassist Paul Sharpe and violinist Sheila Browne. It was a fun and
uplifting musical evening and enjoyed by all. Part three of the series
will be held on April 1 at the Greene Street campus. The concerts are
free and open to the community.
The Music Committee acknowledges the passing of Dorothy (Dot)
Pearl Hamburger, 93, eldest of four children of Kate and Charles Pearl,
whose family established the Pearl Music Fund in 1995. Our sincere
condolences go out to the family.
Pick up a copy of our CD of High Holiday music, entitled “Bless This
Year,” available in the Temple gift shop for $18. Proceeds benefit
future musical programming at Temple Emanuel.
We are working on additional 2012 music programming. Please stay
tuned for further announcements.
Enrollment for 2012-2013
Did you know caring for a family
member can place demands on one's
physical/emotional health and that
caregiving costs the US economy over
$25 billion in lost productivity?!
The Adult Center for Enrichment (ACE) is here to help!
ACE is a non-profit agency that offers support to older
adults and their caregivers in the community with four
services. ACE has three Group Respite Program sites; I
told you in the January article about the program at
Temple.
ACE offers three certified Adult Day Centers. These
centers offer lunch, activities, and a nurse on site at least
four hours a day and enable a caregiver to work.
CarePartners at Home offer a caregiver a few hours a
week to recharge his/her energy. There is no cost to the
family for this wonderful service.
Lastly, ACE offers ongoing Caregiver Education
sessions at no charge. Professional staff can also speak to
community/professional organizations.
Please check out the ACE website at www.ACEcare.org
for more information or just ask me! Please also consider
volunteering with ACE; it‟s a great agency!!
This program is funded in part with a grant from the BJH
Foundation for Senior Services. Thank you, Jodi Kolada

Melton Greensboro – Adult
Learning for the Wondering Jew
Each Wednesday, more than 40 Temple
and Beth David members study together
with Rabbis Guttman and Havivi. This year-long course of learning is
highly interactive and honors all points on the Jewish spectrum. Want to
experience it yourself? Sign up for March Melton Madness and spend
an evening dedicated to spiritual depth and Jewish growth. Classes
meet on Wednesdays from 7-9:15 pm.
Foundations of Jewish Living – In late January, we started this
Tuesday morning Melton class for parents with young children. Taught
by Janet Elis Milder, Foundations has become an immediate hit. Each
session explores what the Jewish tradition teaches us about
parenting. As one mom put it: “The stories highlighted in the class are
relevant to my life. As I left the class on Tuesday, I felt like I didn't want
to leave the room. I wanted to hear more, share more, explore more.”
Melton is a joint project of Temple Emanuel and Beth David. For
