10 iMpACTS OF ThE SpOrT FOr LiFE CENTrE The Sport for Life Centre will: dEVELOp LEAdErS With an emphasis on training, mentoring and coaching, the Centre will develop leaders across the province who will help our next generation succeed - in sport and in life. TrAiN AThLETES, COAChES ANd VOLuNTEErS Manitoba’s athletes, coaches and teams - at all levels - will grow and develop using this top-notch, year-round training facility. It will combine ground-breaking opportunities in coaching, athletic therapy, fitness testing, nutrition and sports psychology, which will result in success on provincial, national, and world stages. Coaching and training resources will also be available online and via webconferencing so that all Manitobans can benefit. hELp KidS jOiN ThE righT TEAM Sport programming and leadership development will be provided for underserved youth, proving an alternative to gangs. rEViTALizE dOwNTOwN wiNNipEg The Sport for Life Centre is centrally located and will invigorate Winnipeg’s inner city by attracting 400,000 people downtown each year. BriNg SpOrTS hErOES TO LiFE The new and interactive Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame & Museum will serve as a source for inspiration, as will athletes of all levels training together in the same facility. BuiLd hEALThY COMMuNiTiES The Sport for Life Centre will be a one-stop resource that offers healthy alternatives for all ages. The same skills that aid sport development translate into valuable life skills and, in turn, a healthier community.
KidSpOrT KidSport is a national charity administered by Sport Manitoba that provides support to children by removing financial barriers that prevent them from participating in organized sport. In 2010/2011, provincial and regional fundraising efforts provided a total of $290,760 to support 1,627 youth, aged from 6 to 17, with grants of up to $300 to help pay their local club/team registration fees. COMMuNiTY SpOrT ALLiANCES A Community Sport Alliance is a collaborative approach to sport development. Sport Manitoba supported six Community Sport Alliances in Brandon, Lakeshore, Morden, Swan Valley, Tri S – Selkirk, and Winnipeg. The focus of these alliances is on community partnership in sport, recreation, education, and healthy living, working together to coordinate activities and promote active living for all in their communities through their development of shared annual plans. New Alliances are expected to be formed this year in Dauphin, Flin Flon, The Pas, Thompson, and Portage la Prairie. In 2010, the Winnipeg Community Sport Alliance and its partners developed the Winnipeg Community Sport Policy and a comprehensive online registration system and database. An inventory of community sport facilities and programming will be hosted on the City of Winnipeg website for public access. CANAdiAN SpOrT FOr LiFE Sport Manitoba continues to work with Provincial Sport Organizations and partners to embed the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) principles and program development through planning support, resource guides and presentations. During 2010/2011, four Provincial Sport Organizations have embarked on a Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) implementation planning process and several others have expressed interest. Four sports have been identified to align aspects of their Manitoba Games technical package with their National LTAD Model. Recognition of the ongoing need for communication and education has resulted in standardized presentations being developed on “Importance of Physical Literacy” and “CS4L and the Role of the Coach”. 11
