The Inaugural Bilateral Program continues to work with participating
Provincial Sport Organizations to fund programs/projects in Manitoba’s
remote, isolated, and inner-city urban communities, providing ongoing skill
development and training to over 4,000 youth participants from the ages of 7
to 18.
The Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre (WASAC) is a success
story of this program. In 2010, WASAC’s successes include:
• Summer Kids’ camp targeting Aboriginal youth in over 50 schools across
Winnipeg – 1058 youth (589 girls) ages 7-12 participated
• Partnership with the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource
Development, in training 27 Aboriginal Leaders (ages 14-28) to lead
their summer camps
• Summer ECO-U camp for 893 youth (7-12 years) and 33 Leaders (14-27
years), which focused on introducing youth to environmental issues in a
fun and dynamic way
• Hiring 80 Aboriginal youth, 10 as Group Leaders and 70 as Junior
Leaders or Leaders-in-Training
With ongoing support from the Bilateral Program, the Manitoba Aboriginal
Sport and Recreation Council (MASRC) now has five full time staff who are
involved in not only the Aboriginal Bilateral Program , but were also very
involved in running three events throughout the year (hockey in April, golf
and softball in June).
The MASRC initiated plans to hold the 2011 Manitoba Invitational Indigenous
Games in July, 2011 in partnership with host committees in both the Peguis
Nation and Opaskwayak Cree Nation. In addition, the Council will manage the
Kidsport warehouse, working with Sport Manitoba to collect and distribute
sport equipment and clothing throughout the province.
