AWARDS/HONORS The American Psychological Association (APA) has named IIT Nambury S. Raju Endowed Psychology Chair Ron Landis as a fellow. Fellow status is an honor bestowed upon APA Members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology. Fellow status requires that a person’s work has had a national impact on the field of psychology beyond a local, state, or regional level. A high level of competence or steady and continuing contributions are not sufficient to warrant fellow status; national impact must be demonstrated. A paper co-authored by Ron Landis was named a co-winner of the Best Paper of the Year for the journal Organizational Research Methods. The paper, The Earth Is Not Round (p = .00), written by Landis and co-author Jose Cortina, addresses the continued discussion and debate regarding ■ Lynda Gibson, Associate Professor Joyce Hopkins’ student, was selected as a Fellow for the 2012–13 academic year by the Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois (DFI) Program Board of the Illinois Board of Higher Education. The estimated Fellowship amount is $11,000. the appropriate use of null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) and effect size testing (EST). Specifically, the paper examines the myth that uncritical replacement of NHST with EST will improve psychological and organizational science. The use of NHST and EST is described along with a summary of the arguments offered in support and against both. In addition to addressing the veracity of these assertions, the paper describes the concept of the translation mechanism and compares the success of NHST and EST as mechanisms. Finally, the paper suggests changes that may facilitate translation in future research. Frank Lane was promoted to Associate Professor. Scott Morris was promoted to Professor. GRANTS The Center on Adherence and Self- Determination (CASD: Patrick Corrigan, P.I.) was awarded an administrative supplement to add two health economists to its team: Marjorie Baldwin from Arizona State University and Zuleyha Cidav from the University of Pennsylvania. The health economists will add cost-benefit analyses to the CASD’s portfolio of health research. Jennifer Miller is a consultant on the grant “A network approach to the prediction of autism spectrum disorders,” sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health. Arlen Moller is a consultant on the grant “Opt-IN: Optimizing Intensive Lifestyle Interventions for Weight Loss,” sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. She is active in research and has presented at international conferences on the topics of leadership, conflict management, and diversity. While working to complete her Ph.D., Burris is teaching statistics and research methods to graduate students at Elmhurst College. She is also helping to launch a technology startup, providing personalized positive psychology-based coaching to employees at all levels. 7
