Victoria and I am the
local representative from
Cancer Research UK, my
role is to help anyone in the
local area who would like
to volunteer or fundraise
for us.
Cancer Research UK is the world’s
leading cancer charity dedicated
to saving lives through research.
Our groundbreaking work into
the prevention, diagnosis and
treatment of cancer has seen
survival rates double in the last 40
years. Our scientists and doctors
have contributed to most of the
world’s top cancer drugs and
we have pioneered the use of
radiotherapy to treat cancer.
We don’t just do research. Every
year we help millions of people
get the information they need
to understand the disease. And,
together with our supporters, we
campaign on key cancer issues
including access to cancer drugs,
screening and reducing the use of
tobacco.
More than one in three of us
will get cancer at some point in
our lives. Our research to beat
cancer is entirely funded by
the public. And thanks to their
generosity our scientists, doctors
The Cancer research UK Centre at Cambridge
and nurses are leading the world
in discovering new ways to fight
cancer. Research saves lives and
our work is critical to ensuring
more people beat this devastating
disease.
Last year 2011/12 we raised £432
million, £332 million of which was
spent on research, the rest goes
on future fundraising. For every
£1 you donate we guarantee
that 80p will be spent directly on
research. You might be surprised
to hear that 90% of our donations
are for £10 or less and there are
lots of things you can do to help
raise funds.

Sponsored silence - Keep your
lips sealed for a day and ask for
donations.
Shave it off - Get sponsored
to shave off your hair or your
eyebrows.
Have a good clear out - Start
auctioning off all those unused
items sitting around your house
that you don’t need any more.
Do a good deed - From sweeping
up those autumn leaves to
cleaning and car washing – there
are lots of chores your neighbours
could use some help with.

Thanks to our supporters, we
spent more than £42 million last
year on leading scientific and
clinical research in East Anglia.
We fund groundbreaking research
throughout the region, from
clinical trials running at nearby
hospitals, to our Cancer Research
UK Centre in Cambridge. Our
Centres bring together experts
in the local medical and scientific
community to translate research
into benefits for patients as
quickly as possible.
Every day, 80 people are
diagnosed with cancer in East
Anglia which adds up to 29,300
people a year being diagnosed in
the local area alone and cancer
death rates in East Anglia have
fallen by almost a quarter over
the last twenty years.
We have made great progress but
there is still so much more to be
done.
