GOVERNANCE I believe that our sport enjoys one of the strongest and most expert governance teams of any sport in our Region. I have had the opportunity to network with many codes in our region, and I can assure you that the quality of our governance is at the forefront of local and regional sporting organisations. Since the 2011 AGM, the TCRI Board has completely re-written our Strategic Plan and this plan has become the “road-map” for tennis for the past 12 months and will do so for the next two years also, when it will be reviewed and adapted for the next three year period. Any Strategic Plan is, and should be, fluid and subject to change and refinement as the dynamics of the time influence it. Each 90 days the Board develops a “Concurrent 90 Day Plan” which identifies the top five outcomes to be achieved for that period. Peter reports in detail on our Strategic Plan in his Chairman’s Report. The WPFI Board is also developing their own Strategic Plan, and this is an exciting and important piece of governance work also. My thanks go to TCRI Chairman Peter Maciaszek and his Board for their astute governance and their support of me and my administration team. Peter and Lindsay North, WPFI Chairman, have donated much additional time out of their busy legal practices to assisting with our EQ Recovery also and they report in detail in their respective Chairman’s Reports. Thank you Lindsay and Peter, your expertise is greatly appreciated. An important and valuable feature of our governance is our Advisory Groups: Interclub; Player Development; and Communications & Marketing. Thank you to Mark Barnes, Glenn Wilson, and Ty Tiller for your chairmanship of your respective Groups which play an important role in our success both on and off the court. COMPETITIONS Interclub enjoyed another successful season. Congratulations to all grade winning teams, and a huge thank you to clubs for their continued support by hosting interclub on your courts in the absence of a regional tennis centre at which to play these competitions. A number of successful Tournaments have also been hosted by clubs – again, thank you for providing your facilities. Tennis Canterbury’s ITF Junior Tournament was jointly hosted with Mid Canterbury Tennis Association in Ashburton, and our thanks go to Cynthia Christie and the MCTA administration team, and the Canterbury Tennis Umpires Association, for an expertly delivered event. Our juniors enjoyed some success at the National Teams Events, with the highlights being our 14’s Boys winning their national title, and the 12’s Boys being runner-up. Our competitive season culminated in a very enjoyable and successful Season Awards at which we celebrated excellence in all aspects of our game, both on and off the court. Congratulations to all winning teams, players and administrators. Special congratulations are extended to Burnside Park Tennis Club for their winning of the inaugural ASB Club of the Year Award. TENNIS OPERATIONS, ADMINISTRATION, AND CLUB SUPPORT Communication with our tennis community has been greatly enhanced over the last 12 months, and this is an area of real focus for us as your administration team. When a sport talks with, and in turn listens to their stakeholders, much can be achieved. I thank the Clubs, Associations and Sub Associations for the part you play in this improved communication. Club Support is an area in which I believe we can do much better things. We are working closely with Sport Canterbury on the “Club Mark” Club Capability program, and Sport Canterbury have also supported a tennis community wide independent study, the results of which will help us better understand our “customers” that participate, either socially or as affiliated, in our sport: Who they are; Why they choose to participate; What type of tennis experience they want; and Where they play our game. This will be a valuable piece of research which we are committed to sharing with you. 7
I’m pleased to report that our affiliated membership numbers have remained steady (refer to the table on page 30). Whilst a loss of 4.8% in affiliated player numbers is not desirable, it is a steady recovery from the effects of the earthquake at a time when many sporting codes and other community organisations are experiencing similar difficulties with membership retention. SPONSORSHIPS Our valued Sponsors have all stood by us in these challenging times and at a time when, because of these challenges, we have not always been able to deliver on the entitlements in their agreement with us. Thank you to: ASB (Major Sponsor and Official Bank of Tennis Canterbury), Wilson (Official Ball of Tennis Canterbury); Kia (Official Vehicle of Tennis Canterbury); Forrest Wines (Official Wine of Tennis Canterbury); and Z Energy as Naming Rights Sponsor of Z Energy Wilding Park Tennis Centre. COMMUNITY GRANTS Community Trusts continue to play a major role in funding our game. Without their support, it is not an understatement to say we would be in greater financial difficulty. These grants are of course never guaranteed year-to-year, and to that end our reliance on them in our financial model is not an ideal one. However that said, that is the nature of sport and our business and whilst we rely on them greatly we must at the same time seek other forms of more secure funding. Thank you to Mainland Foundation; Canterbury Community Trust; NZCT; and Air Rescue Services for your financial support of Tennis Canterbury and many of our clubs also. Christchurch City Council also provides significant financial assistance through their grants – thank you. Sport Canterbury fund to a great degree our successful “Tennis in Schools” program and we have invested much in developing our relationship with them, and I’m pleased to say this relationship is now of a much higher quality than it has been of recent times. Sport Canterbury provides program support in other areas also. Our sincere thanks go to Geoff Barry and his team. TENNIS NEW ZEALAND We continue to enjoy a high quality and enjoyable relationship with our National Association. Not only do they provide us with funding assistance, but together in partnership they help us deliver tennis to our community. A significant initiative that was presented to our stakeholders in May was for a proposed new Affiliation Fee Model and National Database. These initiatives have the potential to re-shape our sport locally and nationally. We fully support these, and ask that our Clubs, Associations and Sub Associations do also. These initiatives will develop further over the coming months. CONCLUSION I hope that as a tennis community you believe that we support you, deliver what you need as stakeholders and participants in our game, and enjoy working with us. I believe we have made great strides in the last year in major areas of our game, but I also know that there is still much to be achieved (and always will be!). With your support and assistance, we will achieve even greater outcomes and more progress together over the next 12 months.
