JARC’s Mission is: ✔ to enable people with developmental disabilities to live full, rich lives as respected members of the community in the setting of their choice; ✔ to provide access to a Jewish way of life for those who choose it; ✔ to provide support services to families who have minor children with any disability or adults with developmental disabilities living at home; ✔ to educate and sensitize the public regarding people with disabilities and their value to the community. Letter from the President: ROB NUSBAUM Dear Friends, It is hard to believe that my first year as President has passed so quickly, and I am honored to be at the helm of JARC as we reach our milestone 40th anniversary. The past twelve months have been filled with unprecedented challenges, but I can confidently report that JARC is and will always remain steadfastly committed to providing the people we serve with the highest quality of care and service possible. In the face of proposed state budgets cuts for services to people with developmental disabilities and in response to the decline in fundraising revenue due to the economic downturn, JARC has responded by implementing significant cost-saving measures, some with immediate impact and others with an eye toward the future. But then JARC has always been known for its resiliency and its ability to defy the odds. In the mid-1960's when a group of parents first met to share their concerns about the future of their adult children with developmental disabilities, they knew the road ahead would not be easy — funding had to be secured, zoning laws changed and community prejudices had to be overcome. But out of the seeds they planted, JARC has today grown to 20 beautiful homes, an array of supported living arrangements and a children and family services division which provides respite care, advocacy, Jewish day school inclusion, age-appropriate social groups for children and teens and adults, information and referral services and community education and training. JARC's amazing accomplishments are an incredible testament to the quality and strength of its forward-thinking Board, its remarkably committed staff and a fantastically generous community. I am proud to join you in celebrating JARC's 40th Anniversary. Thanks to all of you for keeping the dream alive! AUGUST / SEPT 2009 From Our Home To Yours ROBERT NUSBAUM, JARC President Benard L. Maas Foundation Continues its Commitment to JARC At the core of the "JARC Heart" philosophy is the assertion that everyone deserves the right to be cared for in a warm, loving way and lead a meaningful, productive life. JARC is committed to being a passionate, constant advocate for those we serve, no matter what stage of their lives or how great the level of care and attention needed. JARC is honored to announce the establishment of the Benard L. Maas Foundation Advocacy Fund to help support the patient advocacy needs of the 96 residents with disabilities living in JARC group homes and transition homes. Among the services the fund helps make available are: ■ in-hospital advocacy with medical professionals to ensure the people in our care receive excellent medical attention; ■ emotional support and company to those we serve while they are in a hospital or rehabilitation facility; (L to R) Nurse Case Manager Phyllis Abrahams and Program Coordinator Malinda Gross confer about a JARC resident ■ assurance that space in their JARC home will be held so they have a familiar place to return to upon their discharge; ■ specialized medical and nursing services when residents return home; ■ needed home equipment and modifications such as beds, ramps or lifts According to Matthew Engelbert, a Maas Foundation Director, "The directors of the Benard L. Maas Foundation are very proud of our longstanding partnership with JARC. Lynn Engelbert (Director) spearheaded this effort as she feels strongly about the importance of this project and the essential benefits it will provide." With the establishment of this new fund, the Benard L. Maas Foundation affirms its 24-year commitment to JARC which began in 1985, with the creation of the Benard L. Maas Supported Independence Fund and continues to include the Maas Technology Fund and Maas Quality of Life Fund.
