Issue 14/12 Thursday 17 May 2012
Nga mihi te whanau o Kavanagh.
Greetings to the Kavanagh community.
Another busy week almost over. It has been a frenetic term thus far
with a lot of distractions, albeit positive ones such as the
Production, sports exchanges and retreats. Managing "green space"
that is dedicated only to teaching and learning time is a perennial
problem but we will be reviewing things for Term 2 next year. It may
mean changing the timing of events or foregoing something. Building
capacity with our online learning platform "Koodle" will be vital
so students can access missed work, notes or assignments quickly
and keep up to date. In the 21st century the notion of 9 to 3 schooling
has to be broadened where learning becomes an "anytime/
anywhere" condition. We have to continue our quest to teach
students to "manage self" which means (with support) taking a bigger
responsibility for their learning.
A few quotes below show that even student excuses these days are
taking on a 21st century dimension!
The administrator said the ‘cloud’ where I stored my research
data had some kind of electrical storm and it was lost in
cyberspace.
I tried my laptop, iPad and iphone but the batteries were flat
and I didn’t have time to recharge them. I had considered
resorting to pen and paper but I wasn’t sure how to use them.
Technically the software on my P.C did solve the Maths
problems for me and formatted the answers but I did switch
it on, used the correct password and printed it out myself.
The H20 I spilt on my P.C didn't interface well, causing it to
spark out.
The Directors of “Chicago” would like to thank the
Kavanagh community for supporting our sell-out season of
our major production.
Each night the audience was treated to a spectacle of lighting,
music, singing and dancing.
To invoke the magic of “Chicago” the auditorium was transformed
into a dazzling nightclub ablaze with an exquisite
lighting design. The popular jazz music and the colourful
costuming all contributed to a remarkable extravaganza.
A special thank you to all the parents of our cast members.
Without your support our efforts would be in vain.
Many personal items have been left behind in the Green
Room, especially items of clothing. Please encourage your
child to check if any of their possessions are still there.
“Snow Day” Procedure
In the event of adverse weather
affecting the school day, please
phone the school office and listen to
the phone message from 7:00am or view the website
where updated information will be posted.
This information can also be obtained by listening to radio
stations from 7.00 am, although in recent years with radio
stations not having a local office this has proved to be
less reliable than in the past.
We ask Parents/caregivers to discuss alternative school
collection arrangements with your children now, should
weather conditions change during the school day. Younger
siblings should know a pre-arranged place to meet their
older brothers and sisters in the school grounds etc.
Students will also be informed by the school if the buses
will run at an earlier time.
RUGBY PLAYERS OF THE
WEEK
Congratulations to all the students mentioned and best of
luck for this weekend’s games.
Hauora is a Maori health philosophy taught
in NZ schools.
The concept of well-being encompasses the
physical, mental and emotional, social, and
spiritual dimensions of health. This concept
is recognised by the World Health Organisation.
Hauora is often represented as a Whare (house) with the walls representing
the four elements (physical, mental, social, and spiritual). The concept being
that if one of the walls is not strong it will impact on the stability of your
Whare. Conversely if three of the walls are strong, it will put you in good
stead as you rebuild a damaged wall.
