Issue 22/12 Rāapa 25 Hôngongoi 2012
Tena Koutou Katoa
Maori language week was ushered in to Kavanagh
on Monday with a rendition of the Kiwi classic "Poi E" on the staff
room data projector. A few of our teachers were showing their
skills and dexterity in the classic art of poi. Ka pai (well done) the
Maori department. Who said teachers don't know how to have
fun!
On a more serious note, Judge Andrew Beecroft, who is well
known for his advocacy of youth issues in Aotearoa, spoke at the
School Trustees Association conference last week. He highlighted
10 key issues that underpinned those young people who are highly
"at risk" and are often cut off from learning opportunities.
1. Family and lack of family support
2. School attendance, learning disabilities
3. Income inequality
4. Violence among young people and in the home
5. Drug and alcohol abuse
6. High numbers of Maori in the court system
7. Gang culture
8. Lack of male role models
9. Community connectedness
10. Seeing and learning good values
Most of this is not new. However, this is such a serious issue for
us as a nation as 1 in 5 (20%) of young people from 18 to 25 are
not engaged in work, education or training. Schools are often
expected to somehow ensure that young people overcome all of
these obstacles which is a pipe dream. There is no doubt good
schools and good teachers make a positive difference and with an
ounce of luck turn things around. Often what is lacking are the
tools, resources and personnel. Trying to wring funding out of the
Ministries to support at risk youth is generally given low status and
is at times a pride swallowing siege. Whilst it is tough times for the
economy this has to change. The down stream costs are too great
for all of us.
CALLING ALL ADVERTISERS FOR
THE YEARBOOK/MAGAZINE 2012
Every year at Kavanagh College we produce a yearbook/magazine,
recording the history and achievements of
our school year. Last year’s Magazine ran to 148 pages.
Students who attend our College come from the whole of the
greater Dunedin area, from Port Chalmers to Mosgiel, so the
magazine reaches a very wide circulation area. We exchange
with other schools and copies are lodged with the Dunedin
Public Library, the Hocken Library and the Government
archives in Wellington.
Such a publication is a major financial undertaking and to
assist once again with this we offer interested organizations
the opportunity to advertise.
Please contact Mrs Ireland-Kenny through the School Office
for details. Copy closes on Friday, 7 September.
