From the Chaplain’s Desk
Dear Friends:
Standing on the dais next to President Levin last November during the final banquet of the
AYA Assembly and hearing the citation read as I received the Yale Medal was a moment I shall
long cherish. There was recognition of our beautiful Cesar Pelli-designed student center and
appreciation for the contribution that Catholic ministry makes on Yale’s campus. Fr. Riggs, our
founding Chaplain, would have been a worthy recipient of the Yale Medal; but, he died in 1943
before the Yale Medal tradition began in 1952. Much of what we do here is the fulfillment of
his original vision. We strive to fill big shoes, indeed!
Receiving any award certainly takes me out of my comfort zone. My spirituality draws heavily
from Luke 17:10 – When you have done all that you were commanded to do, say, ‘We are useless
servants. We have done no more than our duty.’ For what we do here is our duty: to foster the
development of a vibrant Catholic center at Yale. That is a living out of our mission. As
Mother Theresa once said, “God has not called us to be successful; God has called us to be
faithful.”
The joy of that AYA evening was only diminished by the absence of Tom Golden who had died
three weeks prior. He was scheduled to sit next to me at the dinner and I had wanted him to
be honored for his extraordinary involvement here. I miss his friendship and remain eternally
grateful for the powerful legacy he leaves behind. We strive every day to be worthy of it.
We never settle for ‘maintenance mode’ – just keep it all going – but instead we are constantly
focused on ‘mission mode’ – how can we continue to grow and do it at a level of excellence?
Expanding our ministry and avoiding complacency are high priorities here.
My thanks to our alumni and friends for taking seriously this task and for being partners
in doing what we are supposed to do! The involvement of each person contributes to the
difference we make in the lives of students on a daily basis.
Know that I am profoundly grateful to all who make such a difference here. You are
remembered in prayer with esteem and deep appreciation.
