<strong>Report<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Parents</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Primary</strong> <strong>School</strong>: <strong>Communication</strong>, Mean<strong>in</strong>g and Learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
selected <strong>to</strong> participate <strong>in</strong> this phase of the work on the basis that they<br />
represented various types of school sett<strong>in</strong>g: disadvantaged urban,<br />
s<strong>in</strong>gle sex (boys), all-Irish, small rural, mixed/mostly middle class, and<br />
a multi-denom<strong>in</strong>ational school <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g a significant ethnic<br />
m<strong>in</strong>ority proportion. A brief profile of each participat<strong>in</strong>g school<br />
follows while Tables 2.1 and 2.2 summarise key details of each school<br />
and case study participants.<br />
<strong>School</strong> A is a medium sized urban school with disadvantaged status<br />
with approximately 200 students. It has 12 ma<strong>in</strong>stream teachers, a<br />
HSCL teacher, four learn<strong>in</strong>g support (LS) teachers, behavioural<br />
support teacher and an early start teacher. It has a large m<strong>in</strong>ority of<br />
Traveller parents. The pr<strong>in</strong>cipal, four teachers a LS teacher, a Junior<br />
Infant teacher, the HSCL teacher and a fourth class teacher) and four<br />
parents <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a Traveller parent with six children, and three other<br />
parents who have had 12 children <strong>in</strong> school participated <strong>in</strong> the case<br />
study. A focus group was conducted with four children from fifth and<br />
sixth classes. The Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal is female and has been teach<strong>in</strong>g for over<br />
20 years. Most of the teachers have been <strong>in</strong> the school for the past<br />
15-20 years.<br />
<strong>School</strong> B is a large urban school with disadvantaged status. It has<br />
approximately 450 students, 20 ma<strong>in</strong>stream teachers and 16 support/<br />
special teachers, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a HSCL teacher. It has a large m<strong>in</strong>ority of<br />
Traveller students (about 70) and one third of the students were<br />
either born outside of Ireland or their parents have recently<br />
immigrated <strong>to</strong> Ireland. The focus group with six children from fourth<br />
and fifth class was undertaken <strong>in</strong> June 2007 (6th class students were<br />
on a school <strong>to</strong>ur the day of the school case study). The pr<strong>in</strong>cipal is<br />
male and has approximately 35+ years teach<strong>in</strong>g (25+ as pr<strong>in</strong>cipal). A<br />
small number of teachers have been <strong>in</strong> the school for the past 15-20<br />
years and the staff has a significant number of recently qualified<br />
teachers (i.e. <strong>in</strong> the last 1-5 years).<br />
