Welcome from the Alumni Team
The snow and ice which accompanied your last magazine
have hopefully given way to summer sun!
However, despite the lack of warmth in the current
economic climate, we are delighted to bring you more of
your success stories and wish those of you graduating this
summer good luck as you step onto your career ladder.
We are also mindful of those of you whose ambitions have
not yet been fulfilled and, if that is you, don’t forget our
futures team who are there to help with free career advice
and guidance and news of job vacancies.
We have enjoyed meeting some of you at various events
during the past six months. Our Harris Alumni and Retired
Staff lunches in April were closely followed by a
networking event for postgraduate business alumni in
Preston and a London reception for those of you working
and living in the capital. It was good to see others jumping
from the sky and walking across Morecambe Bay in aid of
the Harris Bursary Fund – thank you for your bravery and
your support!
Whilst budgets will be extremely tight for the foreseeable
future, we are fortunate that work continues apace on the
two fantastic new buildings featured in the last issue
Future footballing stars in good hands
Future Blackburn Rovers
stars are in good hands and
it’s all thanks to UCLan
graduate David Pinckard.
After gaining a degree in
Physiotherapy, David secured a full-time
job as a physiotherapist within East
Lancashire NHS Hospitals Trust. At the
same time he worked with Blackburn
Rovers Academy in a part-time capacity
but that was soon made permanent.
David’s work involves assessing,
diagnosing and treating injuries,
undertaking musculoskeletal
screening, offering pitch side medical
support, managing the players’
conditioning while communicating
with coaches, players and parents.
He said: “While at UCLan I completed
more than 1,000 clinical placement
hours in a variety of settings, including
a season long placement with
Blackburn Rovers FC Academy. The
relationship UCLan has with the
academy enabled me to get the
opportunity to develop my skills in
an elite sporting environment. This
experience has been instrumental in
securing my full-time employment
with Blackburn Rovers.
“I’ve had an interest in the anatomy
and physiology of the human body
from a young age. I also enjoy dealing
with people from a wide range of
backgrounds and problem solving so
physiotherapy is a profession that
encompasses all of these skills.”
After his GCSEs David attended
college. He said: “I underachieved at
A-level due to a number of factors so
I subsequently decided to work for a
period of time to re- evaluate and
reflect. I secured employment with a
multinational company as an
installation engineer and this role
enhanced my maturity,
communication skills and time
management. After two years in this
role I decided to return to education
to pursue a career in physiotherapy
and enrolled on an Access to Health
Studies course as a mature student.
After completing this course I was
accepted on to the physiotherapy
degree programme at UCLan.”
David added: “The most striking
aspects of UCLan are the buildings and
facilities, which alongside the staff are
second to none. I made many new
friends and had a fantastic time whilst
studying at UCLan.”
“While at UCLan I completed more
Socks for Happy People
Richard Taylor graduated in 2005 with a degree in
Furniture Design after winning a prestigious national
design award at New Designers in London for his
graduate work.
He went on to design for Habitat and DKNY in New York but then a change of
direction took him to the world of socks. Yes you read that right... socks!
Richard set up Socks for Happy People in 2008 not only to sell fabulous socks but
to create a company with social and environmental values at its core. The company
has a ‘buy one give one free’ initiative whereby for every pair of socks sold, they
give a brand new pair of thick camel wool socks to children living on the streets of
Mongolia. Children here can endure temperatures as low as -40c and can lose
fingers and toes with frostbite.
Top of the range Conference Centre opens soon
If you ever want to get married in a unique
location then UCLan’s new Conference Centre
could be the place for you.
Westleigh House, is located just
outside Preston city centre adjacent to
the University’s Sports Arena. The
sensitive restoration of the £5.5 million
facility has seen the retention of 90
percent of the mansion house’s
original features including the walled
garden, the beautiful grounds and
many internal aspects.
The nineteenth century mansion
house was originally built in 1864 by
Adam Leigh, a prominent mill owner
from the area and it has a long history
which included a partial remodelling
into a Cold War communications
centre complete with nuclear bunker.
Although the University will use the
premises as an off campus conference
centre to complement educational
delivery on its Preston campus, the
facility will also make an ideal venue
for businesses looking for a top-of-the-
range facility which also represents
outstanding value for money.
Nicola Hanmer, Conference and Events
Service Manager at UCLan, said the
venue had undergone a stunning
restoration. “The building and grounds
have been sensitively renovated to
create a first-class facility which
combines the grandeur of a Victorian
mansion house with all the trappings
of a 21st century business centre,
including full wireless internet access,
seminar rooms and break-out spaces.
“In fact it’s difficult to imagine that
part of this building was once a Cold
War nerve centre. We don’t believe
that ‘war room’ meetings of the future
will involve the use of nuclear missiles!”
Westleigh Conference Centre contains
seating for over 300 delegates,
seminar rooms, dining areas and a
alumni
stunning outdoor feature terrace
which has been covered to cater for
all occasions and all weathers.
For business users the centre boasts
state-of-the-art AV and IT equipment.
The new conference centre also
benefits from a great North West
location, with easy access to major
road networks and a close proximity to
Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool
airports. Nicola added: “We are
fortunate in that the centre has a rural
location, but one that is within well
established grounds and with excellent
transport links.”
Westleigh can cater for anything from
training events, small to large business
meetings and away days to
conferences, exhibitions and lectures.
The wider community use functions,
such as private dining and weddings,
can also be catered for.
Westleigh Conference Centre will
open in August 2010 with bookings
now being taken. For further
took all the hassle away by
managing the recruitment and
selection process and initially
funding the activity. I would
urge all small businesses in the
region to seriously consider
taking advantage of this
excellent opportunity.”
Name: Heidi Ward
Course of Study:
BA(Hons) Deaf Studies
MA Ceramics
Year of Graduation: 2007 & 2009
Job Title & Employer: Ceramicist
?
What made you choose to study
your course?
I chose to take Deaf Studies as I wanted to
get a job working with people but on
completing the course I realised that I was
very passionate about using my creative
skills. I had been interested in ceramics
before but I couldn’t see how to make a
living out of it. However, I decided to do
the MA regardless as it just felt right.
What did you do after graduation?
My tutor said that I could still come to Uni
to make and fire work so I thought it was
a good opportunity to continue doing
what I really enjoyed. I bought some clay
with this intention whilst applying for jobs
and attending interviews. It wasn’t until
my tutor told me about an international
competition in Mallorca that I actually
started working on a piece.
What is your greatest achievement
since graduation?
Winning the III Biennial Ceramics
competition of Marratxi, Mallorca.
The competition was started in Marratxi,
Mallorca to celebrate the tradition of
ceramic craft which has been practised
there for many years. The award ceremony
was held at the "Museu del Fang" in Sa
Cabaneta, also known as the 'clay country'
because of the many potteries there.
The first prize is an award of 6000 euros
and the second prize is 4000 euros. The
?
?
alumni
2010 award ceremony was held on the
evening of 29th May which was also the
launch of the exhibition at the museum
which will be open until 10th July.
Winning pieces are kept permanently in
the museum as the museum's property.
Please tell us about the journey that
brought you to this position?
At high school I used clay for the first time
which I enjoyed but it wasn’t until I went
to art college that I realised my passion for
it. One day our tutors were on strike and
I’d gone into college and went to the
ceramics room and the technician there let
me have a go on the wheel. I found it
really challenging and fun and spent the
rest of the day there – it was one of the
best days of my life!
I began looking at universities with
ceramics and glass in mind but ended up
choosing a course with a people focus as
I was concerned I might not get work in
the creative field. Towards the end of my
BA in Deaf Studies I was considering
what to do next and I heard about the
MA in Ceramics.
The MA gave me the chance to explore
whatever I wanted to do so I ended up
continuing the floral themed work I started
whilst doing my A-level Art and Design
and now produce floral porcelain pieces.
The ceramics course at UCLan encourages
people to continue in the field and I would
never have known about the international
competition, or had access to the facilities
to produce my work, without the
continuing belief and support of the staff.
What are your lasting memories of
your time at UCLan?
I will always remember UCLan for meeting
some really good life-long friends and also
my future husband.
I will take away positive memories of all
my tutors who were always encouraging
and friendly and I will never forget my
ceramics tutor, Dave Binns, who has given
me so much support and the confidence I
needed to continue producing my work.
All that is provided to students at UCLan is
superb, both for the academic and social
aspects of student life. I will take away very
positive and happy memories.
Alumni give Disney a run for their money
When Sarah and Talib Kadhim were
studying at UCLan little did they
know that several years later they’d
have their own business and would
be working with world-famous
children’s TV channel Nickelodeon.
Sarah and Talib met while they were
both studying for the BA(Hons) in
Animation and have since gone on to
set up their own business, Back 2 Front
Animation, an animation company
based in Teesside.
After graduating, Talib began working
for a small animation company. His
role initially involved storyboarding
and designing characters, then
animating and modelling, and
eventually directing. Sarah sculptured
characters in her free time but longed
to find a better use for her skills.
“I ached to be creative,” she said.
After gaining two years of industry
experience, Talib decided to start his
own studio. He said: “It was possibly
the hardest thing I have ever done,
and I would not have been able to
achieve it without my wife.” Sarah
added: “We were artists when we
started out and had to quickly learn
a lot about business.”
Back 2 Front Animation was
established in 2006 and in 2007 the
studio won the ‘Best Use of Animation’
award at the North East Digital
Graduate wins BBC Competition
Suzanne Jones, who graduated in 2008 with a Masters in Ceramics, has recently appeared
in the BBC 2 televised competition, Mastercrafts.
Suzanne, who studied for six intense weeks with a Master Stonemason at Hardwick Hall in
Derbyshire as part of the programme, went on to win the show. Her winning piece,
a sundial made from stone, is housed in the orchard at Hardwick Hall for life and will be
seen by thousands of visitors every year.
Suzanne was keen to take part in the show to highlight the importance of crafts such as
ceramics. She said: “I believe that old ancient crafts play a huge part in the teachings of art
and design subjects. The skills and ‘hands on knowledge’ are integral to making quality
trained creative practitioners.”
As well of winning such a high profile competition, Suzanne has also been awarded an
Honorary Mention Diploma at the Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea International Competition.
The event is one of the most prestigious ceramic competitions in the world and her work is
featured in the finalists’ exhibition at the Icheon World Ceramic Centre in Korea and in an
accompanying book.
Speaking about her time at UCLan, Suzanne said: “The tutors were very helpful and if
anyone is unsure about going to do a degree then they shouldn’t be, they should go for it!
I was 30 years old when I began my design degree. It’s never too late to begin to learn”.
8
Awards for a production featuring a
character who used sign language,
which they produced for the deaf
charity Talking With Hands.
In 2009, Sarah and Talib were
approached by Nickelodeon who
commissioned them to produce six
humorous short animations. Talib said:
“We’ve always been massive fans of
Nickelodeon and had often thought
about approaching them with our work.
When they approached us after seeing
our work online we were so excited.”
The success of Back 2 Front Animation
didn’t happen overnight. Sarah said:
“The animation industry can be really
hard to get into. Make sure that you
take life drawing classes. I can’t express
how important it is…no matter what
area of animation you go into.”
Spectacular new images of the Sun revealed
UCLan is playing a crucial role in the distribution of spectacular
new pictures of the Sun which are now being captured by the
recently-launched Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO).
The images of the Sun captured by SDO
are the equivalent to ten times the
quality of high definition television.
Through UCLan the UK will have
‘local’ access to the SDO data.
The satellite’s telescopes will take
eight of these high quality images
every ten seconds, 24 hours a day,
generating the equivalent of 1.1
terabytes of data daily.
The extreme data-rate requires
dedicated pipelines across the world.
UCLan has set up a UK facility to
provide such a data-hub for the UK
research community. This will provide
a unique gateway for UK scientists to
exploit the mission.
Commenting on the first images to be
released by SDO, Dr Robert Walsh,
UCLan Project Leader and University
Director of Research, said: “I have
been astounded at the clarity of these
first images. They show us the awe
inspiring magnitude of the Sun’s
power through violent eruptions and
solar storms at a quality we never
thought possible. The incoming tidal
wave of data is set to play a major
role in enabling us to make the next
leap forward in understanding our
Sun-Earth connection. As the gate
keeper of these images, UCLan will be
making sure that our own scientists
and those across the UK and Europe
get immediate access to these unique
solar movies.”
SDO is the first mission in NASA’s five
year Living with a Star (LWS)
Programme. Its unique orbit allows
rapid, high-resolution images to be
recorded providing in-depth
information about the Sun’s magnetic
field and solar activity, such as solar
flares and eruptions from the solar
atmosphere that define space weather.
from Preston, all over the UK and as
far as Paris and Spain to participate
in these interactive workshops.
The workshops last an hour and
include a live video link to the speaker,
The expert team at ‘futures’ is
currently working on creating more
online tools and workshops to meet
the demands of graduates near and
far. Head of Student Enterprise and
Employability at UCLan, David Bagley
commented: “UCLan is always keen to
make best use of new technology and
online workshops show how well it
can work. We’ve been using online
tools to support students for many
years and the feedback from
graduates has been extremely positive.
We are committed to building on this
success and rolling out a bigger on-line
programme.”
M and M futures Mentoring is our centralised industry mentoring programme,
which is offered to final year students. Students are matched to M and M
Mentors from the career or industry that they wish to follow to enable them
to gain an insight in to the ‘real world of work’.
The 7 month mentorship starts from October 2010 and mentors can choose
to mentor our students on a 1:1, group or e-mentoring basis. After the short
mentorship has finished, mentors will be awarded with a Mentoring
Completion Certificate.
From October 2010 we have students who want to be mentored in various
areas but desperately need more volunteer alumni mentors from the following
careers/industries:-
◗ Solicitors ◗ Barristers
◗ Forensic Scientists ◗ Forensic Psychologists
◗ Secondary teaching ◗ Tourism marketing/cruise industry
If you are working in any of these areas and are able to give up some time
to help any we would love to hear from you!
session, Alicia Flanagan
commented: “It was
great to get advice like
this whilst at home with
a cup of tea; I liked being
actively involved in the session rather
than being talked at by the tutor. It’s
good to know futures will produce
more online workshops like this and if
I can’t make the live showing the
recording will be online where I can
watch it, rewind and pause it at my
leisure.”
Designs on India
With more than 1.13 billion people, India accounts for approximately one
sixth of the world’s population and is the second most populous country
in the world after China.
The University has a long established
office in New Delhi and has been
working in partnership with
Padmashree Dr D Y Patil University for
10 years. The institution teaches two
UCLan franchised courses: the
BSc(Hons) Biomedical Sciences and the
BSc(Hons) in Molecular and Cellular
Biology. Students study for two years
in India and complete their final year
at UCLan.
From September 2009 UCLan began
working in partnership with Manav
Rachna International University to
offer two franchised programmes:
the BA(Hons) Digital Design for
Fashion and the BA(Hons) Business
Administration. In addition, the
University also signed a partnership
with the IMS Design and Innovation
Academy (DIA) to offer BA(Hons)
Fashion and Brand Promotion.
The collaborations with the two new
Indian partners were celebrated with
a spectacular catwalk show in New
Delhi which also served to launch
UCLan’s International Fashion Institute
(IFI) to the Indian market.
Rory Turner, Programme Leader for
Fashion, said: “The IFI is a market
leader in the delivery of Fashion Brand
Promotion, having won major awards
at Graduate Fashion Week, London for
well over a decade. However, the
subject is one area that is still in its
infancy in India.
“Drawing on our own vast experience
of staging major catwalk shows in
London for many years, together with
the local knowledge and experience
of DIA, enabled us to produce a
stunning show that was certainly a
night to remember.”
‘East meets West’ not only showcased
the award-winning designs of UCLan’s
2009 fashion design students but also
the designs of their Indian
counterparts at DIA.
The event opened with collections of
the final year students from DIA and
these were followed by the graduating
collections from UCLan students. The
finale included the showing of
fabulous bridal wear designs from two
UCLan graduates and collections from
Royal Rajwara, a bridal wear company
run and operated by staff and students
from DIA.
alumni
Rory added: “The show was
instrumental in publicising the courses
on offer at the two Indian institutions
and has kick-started the recruitment
process which will see student
exchanges between UCLan and the
Indian partners. We were also able to
introduce and promote our new MBA
in Fashion Brand Management which
is the only true fashion related MBA
being delivered worldwide. The course
is being offered at UCLan in
partnership with Lancashire Business
School and we anticipate strong
interest from international students
from across the globe.”
2010 marks 50 years of fashion at
UCLan and to celebrate the occasion
the University will hold further high
profile events in Shanghai, Hong
Kong, India and Vietnam.
Every little helps….
Thank you to everyone who has continued to support us in our
fundraising efforts to increase the Harris Bursary Fund. The fund
continues to enable us to help students who are financially
disadvantaged by allowing us to buy books, computers and even
food vouchers from your donations.
Inaugural Harris Bursary Ball is major success
Disadvantaged students have
received a major boost thanks to
a fundraising initiative by UCLan.
On Saturday 15th May, over £12,000
was raised for the University’s Harris
Bursary Fund by the 270 guests,
stakeholders and associated
companies who supported UCLan’s
inaugural Harris Bursary Ball.
The event was supported by two
UCLan Honorary Fellows. Lancashire
actor and impressionist Jon Culshaw
teamed up with rugby legend Bill
Beaumont to headline an evening
packed with entertainment that also
included performances by Fever Latin
Team Preston and the University's
Drama Society.
University Vice-Chancellor Malcolm
McVicar said the money raised from
the event would be of enormous
benefit to students: “Bright and
capable students ought to have access
to educational opportunities
regardless of their social or economic
background, and the Harris Bursary
Fund has become an invaluable source
of support to these students.
Initiatives like the Harris Bursary Ball
help us to ensure students can reach
their educational potential.”
Prize donations and support in kind
were supplied by over 90 individual
stakeholders and companies. Many of
the tables were bought by businesses
with strong Lancashire bases - these
included gold sponsors Kirkhambased
electrical contractors Smith
Group UK and the Bolton-based
Cohens Group.
12
Tania Callagher, University Fundraising
Officer, added: “Thanks to the support
of everyone the ball was an enormous
success. We are already looking
forward to the next Harris Bursary Ball
which is set to take place in 2012 in
time for the Preston Guild.”
Alumni take to the skies to raise money for
the Harris Bursary Fund
The second UCLan charity sky dive
event took place in April this year
raising over £15,000 for the Harris
Bursary Fund and the Rosemere
Cancer Foundation.
Sky dive events are heavily governed
by weather conditions and the event
was nearly postponed due to the
volcanic ash from the Icelandic
volcano, Eyjafjallajokull. However,
even though three volunteers were
left stranded in far-away places, there
were still over 70 participants
including four members of the
Alumni Association, Mark Moren,
Daniel Cope, Chris Frost, Ben Bjork.
Mark graduated in 2008 with a Sports
Coaching degree and is now a Physical
Training Instructor for Avenir Training,
a military training school located in
Preston. Mark is the third generation
McCormack who met at University in
the 80s, were there to support him on
the day.
Daniel Cope graduated in 2009 in
Psychology and has taken part in
various charity events including the
Manchester 10k run as well as
volunteer work for St. John’s
Ambulance. Daniel plans to return to
UCLan soon to complete a degree in
Paramedic Practice.
Communications Consultant, Chris
Frost, graduated in 2005 and
currently works for ASUK in London
and Ben Bjork graduated in 2006
with a degree in Quantity Surveying
and Commercial Management. Ben is
back at UCLan studying for his
Masters in Construction Law and
Dispute Management and is also a
freelance consultant and Director of
Bjork Consult Ltd. His current contract
is with EDF Energy who have very
kindly donated an extra £1,000 to the
Alumni and Honorary
Fellows meet in London
On a beautiful Spring evening in London, alumni and Honorary Fellows of the
University gathered together for an informal networking event.
The event, which took place at the Glaziers Hall located by the River Thames near
