Earvin “Magic” Johnson - Co-Owner Dayton Dragons
Earvin "Magic" Johnson was one of the greatest players in the National Basketball
Association over the last half century. He contributed to five NBA championships, an
NCAA championship, an Olympic gold medal team, and was named NBA Most Valuable
Player and one of the 50 greatest players of all-time. He was inducted into the Basketball
Hall-of-Fame in 2002.
Born in Lansing, Michigan, the sixth of ten children, he led his Everett High School team to
the Class A championship during his senior year of high school. After graduation, Johnson
moved on to Michigan State University, and as a freshman, he helped the Spartans win the
1977-78 Big Ten Championship. The following year, he led his team to the NCAA Championship game, a highlyanticipated
matchup with College Player of the Year Larry Bird. Johnson's team won convincingly, and he was
named Most Valuable Player in the NCAA Final Four. In 1979, after his sophomore championship year, Johnson
made himself available for the professional draft and was the first player picked. He went to the Los Angeles
Lakers, a mediocre team at the time. He was an all-star as a rookie and helped guide the Lakers to their first championship
since 1972, honored as MVP of the NBA finals. During his 13-year career, he led the Lakers to five NBA
championships and nine appearances in the finals. He was the NBA MVP in 1987, '89, and '90. He played in 11 allstar
games, was named MVP of the finals three times, was a nine-time First Team all-league selection, and concluded
his career as the NBA's all-time career assists leader.
Following his retirement, Johnson became very active in causes outside of basketball, including the United States
National AIDS Committee, the United Negro College Fund, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the American
Heart Association and the Urban League. Johnson has served as Vice President of the Lakers since 1994. He also
serves as Chairman and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises and Chairman/Founder of the Magic Johnson
Foundation, which has awarded more than $1.1 million to community organizations focused on AIDS prevention.
Archie Griffin - Co-Owner Dayton Dragons
Team Ownership
Griffin, a member of the College National Football Foundation Hall of Fame, Rose Bowl
Hall of Fame, the Ohio State University Sports Hall of Fame and the Columbus Public
Schools Hall of Fame, has won virtually all the top honors any single athlete could win in
college football. Griffin is the only two-time winner of the prestigious Heisman Trophy. He
was a three-time All-American in 1973, 1974 and 1975. He was named Big Ten Most
Valuable Player for two straight years, thereby becoming only the second athlete in history
to accomplish this feat. He was named "College Football Player of the Year" by both United
Press International and by the Sporting News. In 1975, Griffin was a recipient of the
NCAA's Top Five Award. This award is the top honor an undergraduate can receive and is
based on a combination of athletic skill, academic accomplishment, leadership and character. Griffin broke nearly
all the Ohio State rushing records during his days as a Buckeye, and set national marks and Big Ten marks, both for
a single season and for a career. He also holds another rare distinction; he was named captain of the 1974 Ohio State
football team, and his teammates renamed him to captain of the 1975 Buckeyes. Graduating a quarter early, Griffin
earned his college degree in industrial relations. In 1976, he was a first round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals,
served as co-captain and played with that franchise for eight years. As a professional, Archie continued his illustrious
football career by ranking among the top NFL rushers with a 4.1 yards per carry average. He also commanded
respect throughout the league as a very adept pass receiver. Griffin returned to his alma mater in March 1984, and
later accepted the position of Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics in June of 1985. In July of 1987, he was
named Assistant Director of Athletics. In April of 1994, he was named Associate Director of Athletics. His duties
included overseeing 14 sports. In October of 1999, his jersey, #45, was retired in front of a record crowd in Ohio
Stadium. He was the very first Buckeye to receive this honor. On January 1, 2004 Archie Griffin became President
and CEO of the Ohio State University Alumni Association. In addition to that title in February of 2010 he was
appointed OSU’s Senior Vice President for Alumni Relations.
Delino DeShields- MANAGER
DeShields returns for his second year as Dragons manager
after leading the club to a franchise-record 83 wins (83-57)
and a second half Eastern Division title in 2011. With the
youngest team in Dragons history, the club improved dramatically
over the course of the season, finishing the first half at
35-35 before posting a 48-32 record in the second half. Their
second half mark was the best ever in a half for a Dragons
team and the top second half record in 2011 in all of Minor
League Baseball among teams playing a split-season format.
The Dragons were the only minor league team to lead their
league in batting average and earned run average in 2011,
and the first Midwest League team to lead in both categories
in 16 years. The Dragons were just the second MWL team since 1969 to lead the
league in runs scored and fewest runs allowed. Under DeShields, they also led all
of professional baseball in stolen bases in 2011. DeShields will enter his fourth season
in the Reds organization in 2012. He served as manager of the Billings Mustangs
in 2010 and was the hitting coach at Billings in 2009.
PLAYING CAREER - DeShields spent 13 years in the Major Leagues with the
Montreal Expos, Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles, and
Chicago Cubs. He finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting
with the Expos in 1990. His best season came in 1997 with the Cardinals when he
batted .295 with 11 home runs, 55 stolen bases, and a league-leading 14 triples.
DeShields finished in the top three in the league in stolen bases six times during his
career (10 times in the top eight) and ranks among the top 50 all-time in career stolen
bases with 463. He batted .290 or higher in five different seasons of his big league
career. DeShields was originally signed as a first round draft pick in 1987 (12th overall
selection) by the Expos out of Seaford High School in Delaware. He was slated to
play college basketball at Villanova (point guard) before selecting a career in baseball.
DeShields' oldest son, Delino DeShields, Jr. was the eighth overall selection of the first
round in the 2010 draft and signed with the Houston Astros.
2012 Dayton Dragons

Tom Browning - Pitching Coach
2012 Dayton Dragons
Browning joins the Dragons after spending the last five years
as pitching coach with Reds’ short-season affiliates. Browning
began his coaching career in 2007 as pitching coach with the
Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer League and returned to
Billings in 2008. In 2009, he was the pitching coach with the
Gulf Coast League Reds in Sarasota and moved to the the
Goodyear Reds in the Arizona League in 2010-’11.
PLAYING CAREER: Browning is best known for firing the
only perfect game in Reds history when he retired all 27
Dodgers he faced in a 1-0 win on September 16, 1988. At the
time, it was only the third perfect game
of at least nine innings in modern
National League history and no Reds
pitcher has thrown a no-hitter since that
night, 23 years ago. Browning spent 12
years in the major leagues from 1984-
'95, with 300 of his 302 career appearances
coming with the Reds. He won at
least 14 games six times in a sevenyear
period from 1985-'91. His best
year came in ‘85 when he went 20-9 to
become the first rookie in 31 years to
win 20 games. In 1988, Browning went
18-5 for the Reds, finishing second in
the National League in winning percentage.
He was the starting and winning
pitcher for the Reds in game three of the 1990 World Series against the Oakland A's,
helping the Reds to a four-game sweep. That same post-season, he had also started
and won game two of the N.L. Championship Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Browning represented the Reds in the 1991 all-star game. His 298 starts with the
Reds are the most for any Cincinnati pitcher over the last 70 years and fourth most in
club history. He was elected to the Reds hall-of-fame in 2006.
Pelaez (pronounced puh-LY-uz) returns to the Dragons for his
second season and enters his fourth year as a hitting coach in
the Reds organization. In 2011 under Pelaez’s guidance,
Dragons hitters set a club record by batting a Midwest Leagueleading
.264. The Dragons also led the league in runs scored.
Pelaez served as the hitting coach at Billings in 2010 and held
the same position with the Gulf Coast League Reds in 2009.
PLAYING CAREER - Pelaez played in the Major Leagues with
the San Diego Padres in 2002 as a third baseman. He spent
BATTERS ATTERS
20
The Dragons enjoyed a milestone season in 2011.
They garned national attention when they broke the
all-time sports record for consecutive sold-out dates
on July 9, registering their 815th straight sell-out.
The event was covered by CNN, ESPN, the New
York Times, Sports Illustrated, the Wall Street
Journal, and hundreds of other media outlets.
Dragons owners Magic Johnson and Archie Griffin
and former Dragons (current Reds) Drew Stubbs,
Chris Heisey, and Logan Ondrusek were part of a
special celebration on July 23.
On the field, the Dragons set a franchise record with
83 wins and won the second half division title by
going 48-22. They lost in the first round of the playoffs
to Lansing, two-games-to-one. The Dragons
became the first Midwest League team in 16 years
to lead the league in both team batting and team
pitching, setting club records in both categories.
They were just the second MWL since 1969 to lead
the league in both runs scored and fewest runs
allowed. Dragons pitchers broke the league record in strikeouts.
Perhaps the most memorable element of the Dragons 2011 season was the base stealing exploits of shortstop
Billy Hamilton, who swiped 103 bags on the year to break the Reds organizational record. Hamilton
and relief pitcher Drew Hayes were selected as full-season Midwest League All-Stars. Starting pitchers
Josh Smith and Daniel Corcino and first baseman Dominic D’Anna represented the Dragons in the MWL
All-Star Game and Smith led the league in both victories and strikeouts.
Billy Hamilton - The Dragons electrifying switch-hitting shortstop
led all of professional baseball in stolen bases and became the first
minor league or major leaguer to top the century mark in 10 years
when he finished with 103. Hamilton broke the all-time Cincinnati
Reds organizational record for single-season steals and broke the
Dragons team mark before the end of May. He was selected as a
Midwest League full-season all-star. Hamilton hit just .233 in the first
half but improved to .318 in the second half to finish at .278. He also
led the league in runs scored and finished second in base hits. Despite
committing 39 errors, he made dozens of spectacular plays in the field
that left fans in amazement. Baseball America named him the # 2
prospect in the league following the season.
Ronald Torreyes - Standing just 5’7” and weighing just 145 lbs.,
Torreyes became a fan-favorite at Fifth Third Field, finishing the year
with a batting average of .356. He tied the club record with five hits
in a game on July 21 after picking up four hits the night before, going
9 for 10 in consecutive games. Defensively, he was spectacular at second
base and committed just three errors in 67 games. His arrival
from extended spring training coincided with the team’s improvement
to become the top second half club in Minor League Baseball.
Donald Lutz - Raised in Germany with a limited baseball background,
Lutz emerged as one of the most improved players in the
league and finished the year with one of the best offensive seasons in
Dragons history. He joined 2000 Dragons outfielder Austin Kearns as
the only Dayton players ever to hit at least .300 and belt at least 20
home runs in a season. Lutz finished at .301 with 20 HR and 75 runs
batted in. He hit .340 in the second half after finishing the first half
at .257. On the July 21, he became the first Dragons player ever to hit
for the cycle. His 16-game hitting streak was the team’s longest on
the year and he also belted the Dragons only grand slam in 2011.
2011 Season Review

BATTERS ATTERS CONT ONT’D
PITCHERS ITCHERS
Drew Hayes - One of the top quarterbacks in Tennessee high school
football history, Hayes enjoyed a dominant year as the Dragons closer.
He was rewarded by being selected as the right-handed relief
pitcher on the Midwest League’s Full-Season All-Star Team. He was
also selected by Minor League Baseball as the Relief Pitcher of the
Year for the Single-A level. Hayes appeared in 51 games for the
Dragons, notching a league-leading 22 saves in 23 opportunities. He
went 2-2 with a 1.35 earned run average and held opposing batters to
a combined average of .141. In 60 innings, he allowed only 29 hits
while striking out 89. In both May and August, Hayes was selected
as the Dragons Pitcher of the Month.
2011 Season Review
David Vidal – The Dragons slick-fielding third baseman put
together an outstanding all-around season. He led the team in
runs batted in with 85 and tied for the team lead in home runs
with 20 while batting a solid .280. Vidal also led the league in
fielding percentage at third base. Vidal’s best day came on June
18 when he tied a club record by driving in seven runs at Fort
Wayne. Twice, Vidal hit two home runs in the same game (both
also against Fort Wayne). He started 126 of the Dragons 140
games, second only to Billy Hamilton on the club.
Josh Smith - As an unheralded 21st round draft pick in 2010 out of
Lipscomb (Tenn.) University, Smith enjoyed a record-breaking year
for the Dragons in 2011. He established a club record for single-season
strikeouts, notching 166 in 142 innings. Smith led the Midwest
League in victories, going 14-7 with a 2.97 ERA. He was the starting
pitcher for the Eastern Division team in the MWL All-Star Game in
June. Smith had a dominant first half, going 7-3 with a 1.59 ERA in
13 starts, allowing more than two earned runs in only one of the 13.
On May 21, Smith struck out 13 batters in a game, one short of the
club record. He struck out 12 over six innings on April 29. For the
year, Smith made 26 starts, walking two batters or less in 23.
Daniel Corcino - Compared by many to former Dragons pitcher
Johnny Cueto, Corcino joined Smith in the Dragons starting rotation
and the Midwest League All-Star Game. He went 11-7 with a 3.42
ERA for the year and his 156 strikeouts would have broken the club
record if not for Smith’s total of 166. Corcino was great at home,
going 10-2 with a 2.05 ERA in 16 starts at Fifth Third Field. His best
start of the year came on May 18 vs. Great Lakes when he allowed
only one hit over six scoreless innings and struck out 11. Nine times
in 26 starts, Corcino did not allow an earned run. Corcino started and
won the Dragons playoff opener against Lansing on September 8,
allowing two runs in six innings.
