Lending sympathetic ears to
student proposals, Board of
Trustees' committees took action
on five issues last
week-end- .
Following a WCSA recommendation,
the Facilities Committee
asked University Architect
C. Curtiss Inscho to draw
alternative plans for a proposed
new gym.
The Administration was asked
by the Facilities Committee to
work on plans for the improvement
of Sanborn Hall. Sophomore
Stuart Carter told the group the
building was structurally sound,
but lacked an adequate interior.
The Organization Committee
of the trustees will study the
possibility of placing students in
voting capacities on the Student
Affairs, Academic Affairs and
Facilities Committees of the
Board. This proposal was
originally presented by students
to the Student Affairs Committee
on Friday.
Action on the Union remodelling
proposal is expected at
the Facilities Committee meeting
on April 13. Junior Rick Jones
summarized the Union Committee's
report, stressing urgency
in making the Union "a
comfortable campus living room."
The Organization Committee
and WCSA will work on review
procedures for the election of the
Senior Class Trustee, in response
to a report from Carrie Thomas,
Senior Class president, to the
trustees' Student Affairs Com:
mittee.
Over 30 students met with three
Board committees (Student Affairs,
Facilities and Academic
Affairs) that held informal student
sessions last week-end- . Although
not required by guidelines set for
the recently established student
sessions, all committees reported
student concerns back to the full
Board. (In the past, students have
met regularly with only the
Student Affairs Committee.)
Six students meeting with the
Facilities Committee spoke on the
new gym and Union remodelling
plans.
Gym Plans 'Obsolete'
Junior Paul Kaliner, WCSA
member (CSA), called the current
gym plans obsolete and said the
proposed facility would not be
comparable to those of similar
Ohio colleges.
Seniors Jack Keith and Mike
Portnoy presented a petition with
450 signatures to the committee
asking the trustees to "spare" the
Union bowling alleys.
Portnoy said the Union
Committee's remodelling plans
give the lanes "bottom priority."
The lanes have more campus
interest than anything else in the
Union, he added.
Approximately 15
attended the hour-lon- g
students
session
with
mittee.
the Student Affairs Com-
Visitation Questioned
Senior Chris Kloth, trustee-elec- t,
asked the committee to
reconsider the - housing policy
which requires parental consent in
choosing visitation hours. He cited
the increasing number of states
passing the 18-year-old
majority
age as reason why parental
THE TRANSCRIPT
Board Reacts To Students
consent should not be necessary
for students 18 and over.
Junior Tom French reported for
the Union Committee on remodelling.
Students' role in academic
governance again headed the list
of concerns brought by 11 students
to the Academic Affairs Committee.
(Students met unofficially
with this committee last October.)
Junior Judi Hetrick, co-ordina-t-
or
of the group, said, "Student
concerns are now in the area of
academics, where the faculty holds
sole power."
Junior Scott Livingston asked
the trustees to consider what their
role as members of the Academic
Affairs Committee should be.The
committee said the issues he
raised would be discussed next
term.
