PEF Endowment Fund In Action:
PVIT and SMERT Engineering/Technology/Robotics Programs
So, who is PVIT? And what’s a SMERT? you might ask…
If you’re walking down the halls at Palos Verdes or Peninsula High
Schools, you can hear these acronyms being thrown about by students
and faculty. But these small names mean big opportunities for our
children. In a time when companies are shouting for engineering,
technology and robotics personnel, our high schools have created programs
to keep our students in the forefront of these job opportunities.
This year, PEF has committed to fund $60,000 from our Endowment
Fund for these important programs, that are open to all students, a
first-ever gift to the District from the Endowment.
Palos Verdes High School’s PVIT program, or Palos Verdes Institute
of Technology, began in 1987 as one of the first high school robotics
programs in the nation. When PVHS reopened, PVIT entered the robotics
field again with the DARPA autonomous vehicle, becoming the only
high school in the nation to compete against well-established engineering
programs at prestigious universities. The curriculum includes an
El Camino robotics programming course and PVIT has five different
continued from pg 1:
PVIT and SMERT
clubs ranging from BioFuels to Solar Cars to a Robotics
Team. Classes offered include Civil Engineering
and Architecture, Engineering Design and Development,
and Digital Electronics. The PEF funding will
be used for state-of-the-art engineering and robotics
equipment, robotics competition fees/costs, outreach
to the middle schools and a PVIT Coordinator stipend.
According to Becky Baiers, associate principal,
“These programs provide opportunities for students
and extend their knowledge beyond the classroom
through hands-on applications, competitions, and
independent and team research projects.”
Peninsula High’s “Science, Mathematics, Engineering,
Robotics and Technology” (SMERT) program is in its
third year. Harbor and El Camino Colleges support
SMERT by paying for the teachers, as well as field
trips, speakers, additional courses at Harbor and
materials. In return, Peninsula students in the SMERT
program receive both high school and college credit
for the introductory engineering, digital electronics,
civil architecture and robotics courses. Susan Nakaba,
associate principal in charge of curriculum is excited
about these opportunities and says, “The sky’s
the limit. Our high school students are exposed to
industry standard engineering technology and design
principles. PEF’s grant will allow us to purchase
necessary robotics equipment and train our teachers
to expand the program which makes our students
very attractive candidates for admission to university
engineering and technology programs.” Peninsula
engineering, physics and robotics students are
also involved in the Metropolitan Water District of
Southern California’s Solar Cup, where high school
teams design and construct a boat that runs on
solar power. Peninsula’s FIRST Robotics Team, cosponsored
by PEF and El Camino College is already
preparing for its 2nd year in competition after winning
the Rookie Award in May 2008.
Both schools offer courses in principles of engineering,
engineering design and development and digital
electronics, with more planned for the future. The
curriculum is a UC approved four-year sequence
of courses consistent with Project Lead the Way, a
nonprofit national organization that helps students
prepare for college and compete in engineering and
other high-technology fields. Each high school’s
technology courses fulfill University of California and
career technical education requirements. SMERT and
PVIT are open to any student with interest and have
completed one year of algebra skills.
2008 PHONATHON
Ring ring, Ring ring…
Thank You to all of our many
volunteers and trustees who
recently rallied to make
hundreds of phone calls at
PEF’s annual Phonathon.
Volunteers donated their time
many evenings in October to
reach out to families across
the Peninsula for donations
and pledges. We have made
wonderful progress towards our
fundraising goal of $1.5 million!
Many thanks again to everyone
who volunteered.
A big thank you also to our
friends at Coldwell Banker on
Deep Valley Drive for once again
generously opening their doors
(and telephones!) for the PEF.

World Language Introduction at Elementary Schools
In the fall of 2007 the Peninsula
Education Foundation gave a grant
to the PVPUSD to establish an
elementary level world language
program. This start-up program was
introduced at all ten elementary
schools to encourage an introduction
to Chinese or Spanish.
World languages are important in
the academic curriculum for any
child. Studies have proven that early
introduction is key to the ability to
absorb and become fluent in any
language. The Peninsula Education
Foundation is pleased to fund the
continuation of the elementary world
language program this year from our
Endowment Fund.
The program is organized differently
at each school site, but the goal is
to introduce world languages at
an early age. For three elementary
schools, Chinese is the core language
taught to students during P.E. or in the
classroom. The other seven schools are
working on Spanish curriculum in a
variety of different ways.
Cornerstone has a Spanish teacher
(aide) for grades 1-5. Señora Cifuentes
teaches the curriculum that was
purchased a year ago, Viva El
Espanol. Spanish speaking parents
are providing instruction at the
kindergarten level. Señora Cifuentes
is at Cornerstone every Wednesday
for the entire day, where she works
with the classrooms.
Dapplegray is implementing
Rosetta Stone (Spanish) for grades
kindergarten-5. PEF funds were used
to purchase the program for 800
students and staff. It is a web based
program which allows 24 hour access.
The program will be used in the
classrooms utilizing laptop computers
and a password is provided for the
students so that they can access
the program at home. “Rosetta” has
augmented their product so that it is
geared for grade levels K-5 and up.
Lunada Bay has a Chinese teacher
19 hours a week who is working
in tandem with the P.E. teacher
integrating Chinese into the PE
program. They have articulated
vocabulary and language relevant to
PE including directions, action words,
commands, songs and rhymes.
Mira Catalina has hired a specialist
to teach Spanish in grades 2 through
5. She is at school all day Thursday
to instruct students and expose the
children to a foreign language. They
are hoping to incorporate parent
volunteers to teach grades one and
kindergarten. Spanish curriculum kits
and other materials were purchased
with last year’s funding to enhance
the effectiveness of the program.
educación
At Montemalaga School, a Chinese
language teacher, Whenchi Chang,
teaches students Chinese language
and culture. Lessons are taught in the
classroom, and grades 2 through 5
receive a half hour session every week.
During the lessons, students practice
speaking Chinese and try to write/
draw Chinese characters.
Point Vicente students will learn
Chinese this year with lessons taught
by a part time Chinese instructor.
The program will be an immersion
program in the classroom and will run
daily for six to eight weeks.
Rancho Vista has a Spanish teacher
who teaches kindergarten through
fifth grade. She is able to teach each
grade level two thirty-minute sessions
per week.
Silver Spur has “an incredible Spanish
teacher”. She teaches grades 1 to 3.
1st and 2nd meet for 20 minutes twice
a week; 3rd grade meets with her once
a week for 30 minutes. There is hope
to move Spanish into 4th grade in
the future.
Soleado is incorporating the program
into the P.E. program. The P.E. aide
is from Peru and each time that the
students have P.E., they have a 15
minute Spanish lesson before going
out into their P.E. time. During their
P.E. minutes, they practice the Spanish
they have learned.
Vista Grande has added second
grade this year to the 3-5 grades for
Spanish instruction. An Instructional
Assistant, fluent in Spanish, presents
the curriculum. Classroom teachers
reinforce the instruction. Next year,
first grade will be added, and then
kindergarten.

Principals’ Incentive Plan
75% = $7,500
100% = $10,000
Intermediate Level
For every 1% of participation,
the school earns $200.00
25% = $5,000
50% = $10,000
75% = $15,000
100% = $20,000
High School Level
For every 1% of participation,
the school earns $400.00
25% = $10,000
•
•
•
•
The Principals’ Incentive Plan was
established to promote family
participation at each school. This is not
about money raised, but the percent
of families enrolled at the school who
donate to PEF. Participation annually
is at approximately 50% district wide,
and varies from school to school. Our
goal is to increase that by the end of
the year.
The minimum donation to be counted
in the program is $50 per family.
Each principal has the opportunity to
earn discretionary funds for his/her
own school from PEF.
If a family has a child at more than
one school, the family gets “credit”
at each school.
This plan is in addition to the $1.5
million worth of programs we are
already supporting throughout
the district’s schools.
Why we give to PEF’s
Endowment Fund . . .
Carol and Fred Gregory
“Our four children are graduates of
PVPUSD schools. We give to the
Endowment Fund because we are
grateful for what our children have
received. We want to take care of the
short and long-range needs of our
outstanding public schools.”
The Gift That Keeps on Giving
One thing is certain, public school
funding will remain uncertain for
years to come. Gifts to the Endowment
Fund are invested, and remain
as the corpus of the fund in perpetuity.
A percentage of the Fund’s earnings
may be distributed annually
to fund specific programs and staff
agreed upon by the district and PEF’s
Board of Trustees (in accordance with
PEF’s Endowment Fund Spending
Policy).
PEFs Endowment Fund at Work
This year, a distribution from the Endowment
Fund is making it possible
to continue the World Language program
at all elementary schools and
is providing major support for the
computer science and engineering
programs at both high schools: PVIT
at Palos Verdes High and SMERT at
Peninsula High.

Permit No. 126
The Peninsula Education Foundation recently decided to fund the
PVPUSD’s Regional Science & Engineering Fairs for intermediate and
high school students in the 2008-2009 school year.
“During these increasingly difficult economic times, the District asked
for our support in order to continue offering the opportunity to participate
in the annual science fair,” says Dave Wagman, PEF president.
“Given the importance of the science curriculum and how well PVPUSD
students have performed in previous science fairs, the Foundation’s
trustees responded to the urgent need to fund the program this year.”
The 2009 science fair will be held on March 25 and 26 at the South
Coast Botanic Garden. “This program is a key component of our
science curriculum,” says Dr. Susan Liberati, assistant superintendent
of Curriculum and Instruction for the PVPUSD. “As part of INTEL’s
International Science and Engineering Fair, the Science Service Fair,
and the Los Angeles County Science Fair, the PVPUSD event provides a
level of competition that positions our students well to advance to bigger
contests.”
More than 100 projects conducted by 155 intermediate and high school
students were showcased at the 2008 fair in categories ranging from
environmental science to engineering and from chemistry to computer
science. The Peninsula Science Research Team won recognition from The
Aerospace Corporation, and another student was named the California
state winner of the U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize. This is the most
prestigious international award for a water-related science project at the
high school level.
