33 Chuck Miller Grants Awarded to PVPUSD Teachers Congratulations 4 In 1990, the Peninsula Education Foundation (PEF) established an endowment to honor Charles “Chuck” Miller, former Rancho Vista principal, past president of the Peninsula Education Foundation, and local business leader. Over the years, Chuck has donated additional funds to the account in order to increase the amount of grants provided. This year’s grant amount, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Miller coupled with a PEF donation, was a total of $25,000. Any teacher in the PVPUSD is eligible to apply. Applications are judged on the applicants’ proposed use of grant funds, the benefits to students, and the potential for helping to enhance classroom instruction in the school or the district in general. This year, the Chuck Miller Grants are valued up to $1,000.00 each. Beth Buchholz Cornerstone Teaching Reading Using a Differentiated Approach The purpose is to enhance current reading curriculum with resources that support differentiation as compiled by reading expert Laura Robb. Christian Scherba Dapplegray Growing Organic Second Graders Children will learn about composting and then create their own garden. Shannon Bogart Lunada Bay Easy Book Creation Software The grant will be used to purchase Sunburst Easybook Deluxe software for use in the entire school. This program allows students to create, design and illustrate stories, books and reports in a kid friendly publishing format. Heather Sorenson & Wendy Ackerman Mira Catalina Author Spotlight This grant will be used to purchase books to spotlight each month, focusing on and learning different authors throughout the year. Diana Elliott Montemalaga Science Rules! Support ongoing classroom science inquiry with microscopes and other equipment. Susan Smith Montemalaga Measurement Throughout the Year Materials will be purchased that will be used for hands-on exploration of measurement concepts including time, temperature, perimeter/area, mass/weight, and capacity. Elzbieta Gant Point Vicente Art & Literature Readers Leveled reading books will be used and will incorporate art, social studies and science. Marilyn Craft Point Vicente Literature Circle Expansion Literature circles are book groups in the classroom used to strengthen reading comprehension, enhance the development of vocabulary, and encourage a high level of individual student participation. A new group of books will enhance the current library for the students. Jeri Delatorre Point Vicente Going for Gold in Grammar and Writing Implements the Grammar/Writing program authored by Stephen Hake to address falling test scores on the CST and ERB writing test.
Jennifer Woodward Silver Spur Let’s Go Learn Implements the UNIQUE READER program based on DORA (diagnostic online reading assessment) assessments. Allows individualized attention to reading abilities. Mariana Donahoe Soleado Write, Camera, Action! Inspires students to write through the use of digital cameras: Writing and performing news reports, ads, summaries of books and plays. Mariana Donahoe Soleado Reenacting History in the Classroom A Reader’s Theater program will be purchased to allow students to reenact key events in our country’s history. Costumes will be purchased to coordinate with the plays. Juli DiLustro Vista Grande Applying Science, Social Studies, Mathematics and Character Education The purpose of the grant is to purchase annual and perennial plants, soil, mulch, fertilizer and gardening supplies for the school “Gardening Club”. Students will apply science, social studies, math and character education through gardening. Campbell Nimick Miraleste Intermediate Touchpoint Optimal Student Response System The IRC response system gives every student remote access to teacher’s questions during lectures and note taking. The system allows the instructor to ask questions and students to reply remotely. This allows the teacher immediate feedback on the responses to determine the class’ understanding of the lesson. Robyn Benjamin Palos Verdes Intermediate DNA Extraction Proposal This grant will be used to purchase Genes in a Bottle extractor kits to support instruction in cell biology and genetics. Kurt Hay Palos Verdes Intermediate Video Conferencing with NASA’s Digital Learning Network The purchase of new audio equipment will allow video conferencing with NASA and allow the students to hear live NASA videoconferences. These conferences will correspond to the lessons taught in Algebra I. Scott Garman Palos Verdes Intermediate Whale Watch Platforms The whale watch platform is a large teeter-totter. Students stand on the platform and the children are required to work together to problem solve. This will be effective for 6th and 7th grade P.E., and 7th grade Health. Scott Garman Palos Verdes Intermediate Passive/Active Solar Energy Demonstration So that solar energy is a part of everyday learning at PVIS, a Solar Water Heating Collector and Photovoltaic Solar Panel will be purchased to perform solar energy experiments, data collection and analysis and demonstrate active and passive solar energy. Jill Grace Palos Verdes Intermediate Stereomicroscopes for 7th Grade Scientists The goal of the grant is to purchase stereomicroscopes for 7th grade students to enable students to participate in labs and observations. This will allow students to further investigate organisms. Michael Wanmer Palos Verdes Intermediate Enriching Social Studies with Technology Purchase a computer projector for 6/7/8 grade Social Studies classrooms. Projectors enhance and complement strategies used in the classroom. Pat O’Brien Palos Verdes Intermediate Alternative Energy Sources Students will learn about alternative energy sources from a Power House Kit which includes solar panels, a windmill, a thermometer and 70 possible experiments. Students will help construct model homes complete with solar panels, windmills and thermometers. Samantha Weiss Ridgecrest Intermediate Lectern for Debates & Giving Persuasive Speeches A new lectern will be purchased and will be permanent in the classroom for speeches and debates. It will also be used by the Debate Team. Marie Kuhn Palos Verdes High Biology 2: New Course, New Opportunities for Learning! Field trip to the Los Angeles Zoo for the new Biology 2 students for forensic biology. Provides hands-on science course option for students. Joe Pinkelman Palos Verdes High Classroom Jeopardy Jeopardy for AP Art History. Based on the game of Jeopardy students create Jeopardy-style questions which creates a fun learning environment. Nicolai Anikouchine Palos Verdes High Choral Library PVHS has started a new Choral Music program and this will help start a music library. Shin Chi Fame Kao Palos Verdes High Chinese Language Conference To attend a conference and learn different teaching methods, technology and ideas about Chinese language curriculum. This information will be shared with all the other Chinese teachers in the District. Nicole Thompson Palos Verdes High Theater Library A play/musical library will be started from which students can choose monologues, scenes and songs. Tamara Dutko Palos Verdes High Cultural Connections in Spanish Eleven cultural classroom Spanish DVDs will be purchased for the classroom to enhances students’ knowledge of culture. Carlie Fisher Peninsula High Dissection Connection In order to fully understand the importance of the human body, dissection is a large part of science. Preserved small cats to be dissected will be purchased to better understand this lesson. Barbara DeWitt Peninusla High Mythology Book Club A set of four Mythology novels by Rick Riordan will be used to study mythology, a required core of the 9th grade English curriculum. Dusty Vroom Peninsula High Intro to Physiology/Sports Medicine Funds will purchase materials for an introduction to sports medicine/ physiology including text books for a new course. Bruce Colin Peninsula High Expository Writing Benchmark Essays The purpose of the grant is to compile an expository writing resource guide for grades 9-12. English teachers will work together to identify a set of benchmark essay samples for each grade level. Charles Lee & Peter Starodub Peninsula High Hands on Chemistry Using Spectrophotometer Grant funding will help integrate technology into the chemistry curriculum in a classroom setting by purchasing a Spectrophotometer, an instrument that is used widely in college science classes. 5
