Tools and Techniques to Make Your Voices Heard and to<br />

Move Legislators to Action<br />

This workshop will provide participants with background<br />

on advocacy at the federal level and why such efforts are a<br />

critical part of affecting the legislative process. In addition,<br />

panelists will discuss: specific tools, strategies, and approaches<br />

to recruiting advocates, training community members to be<br />

effective advocates, effective activities at the local level to<br />

affect change at the federal level, and cultivating the support of<br />

policymakers. Participants will hear different perspectives on<br />

‘real world’ advocacy campaigns and candid discussions on what<br />

works and what doesn’t in moving legislators to action.<br />

this presentation will discuss the challenges and initiatives<br />

addressing this increasing prevalent health problem in our<br />

Native American populations.<br />

Family Based Approaches to <strong>Health</strong> in American <strong>Indian</strong>/<br />

Alaska Native Communities<br />

Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of American <strong>Indian</strong><br />

paraprofessionals as home visitors and evaluators, particularly<br />

important in communities that have nursing shortages and<br />

cultural preferences for Native interventionists. The in-home,<br />

family-based approach used in these projects addresses several<br />

care-seeking obstacles among American <strong>Indian</strong> youth.<br />
