With the return of six le� e rmen and two starters from last year’s squad, the Tusculum College men’s basketball team prepares to embark upon the 2012-13 campaign. Tusculum head coach Michael Jones, who is entering his second season at the helm of the Pioneer program, boasts one of the largest roster sizes in recent memory of the TC program as this year’s squad is 19-member strong, including 11 newcomers. Nick Spinks is one of three seniors on this year’s team as the 6-2, 170-pound guard played in all 27 games in his inaugural TC campaign a� er transferring from Central Carolina Community College, where he garnered NJCAA All-America Second Team honors. Last year with the Pioneers, he averaged 4.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, while shoo� ng 39 percent from three-point territory in his 20 starts. He also averaged 6.8 points per game in his last nine ou� ngs and posted a season-best 11 points at Lenoir-Rhyne and preceded that with 10 points at Mars Hill. Spinks fi nished third on the team with 23 steals, hauled in eight rebounds against Barton and dished out a season-high seven assists against Cincinna� Chris� an. Junior forward JD Miller is back a� er redshir� ng last season due to injury. During the 2010-11 campaign, the 6-8, 245-pound na� v e of Versailles, Ky. played in 28 games and averaged 4.1 points and 1.8 rebounds per contest. The Woodford County alum posted a career-high 21 points at Lees-McRae in his sophomore season and also tallied 18 points against NCAA II Tournament par� cipant Hillsdale that same year. Sophomore guard Darius Carter was a valuable contributor off the bench in his rookie season. The 6-2, 170-pound Cascade, Va. product played in all 27 games including one start. The George Washington High School graduate scored a season-high 23 points in his collegiate debut against Mount Olive as he shot 7-for-9 from the fi eld and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. He also recorded 11 and 10 points, respec� vely against Lincoln Memorial and Brevard. Carter fi nished the year averaging 5.3 points and 1.7 rebounds per game and emerged as one of the top free throw shooters on the team as he fi red a sizzling 81.5 percent from the charity stripe (44-for-54), including a stretch of 31-of-33 to close out the season. Down the stretch, he made a string of 28 straight free throws (Dec. 10, 2011 - Feb. 22, 2012). Senior Nick Spinks 8 - 2012-2013 Tusculum Men’s Basketball SEASON PROSPECTUS Head coach Michael Jones is beginning his second season guiding the Tusculum men’s basketball program Sophomore forward Neal Spinks enters his second TC season a� er playing in 21 ou� ngs as a freshman and emerged as one of the team’s top shot blockers (10). The 6-7, 240-pound graduate of Western Guilford High School averaged 4.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per game, including a season-high 18 points in 22 minutes against Mars Hill. In that game, he shot 7-for-9 from the fl oor and 4-of-6 at the free throw line. Neal, whose older brother Nick is a senior for the Pioneers, also pulled down a season-best eight rebounds, including fi ve on the off ensive boards against Mars Hill. He also tallied 12 points against Brevard and 10 more markers at Catawba. Spinks fi nished the year shoo� ng 46.8 percent from the fi eld and 65.5 percent from the foul line. TC veterans Anton Tuz and Mar� n Jorgenson are back for the Pioneers. Tuz, a 6-10, 275-pound center from Mykolair, Ukraine logged 136 minutes on the court in his 17 ou� ngs last season, including three starts. He scored a career-high 12 points off the bench against Cincinna� Chris- � a n and added six points at Mars Hill. He followed that with 11 points in a home rematch with the Lions as he shot 5-for-5 from the fi eld. He fi nished the season shoo� ng 46.5 percent from the fi eld, including a sizzling 6-of-7 (.857) in his last two games. Tuz also averaged 1.8 rebounds per contest on the year and grabbed a season-best fi ve boards against Mount Olive. Mar� n Jorgensen, a 6-4, 195-pound sophomore guard from Beder, Denmark, played in seven games for the Pioneers as a rookie and was the recipient of the Tusculum Freshman of the Year Academic Award as he posted a perfect 4.00 grade point average. Junior guard Addison Flynn will be making his Tusculum debut this season as the Walters State product brings two years of junior college experience to the table for Coach Jones. In 2010-11, Flynn averaged 11.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, 3.65 assists and 0.61 steals per game for the Senators. The 6-0, 160-pound na� v e of Faye� e ville, Ga. shot 79.3 percent from the free throw line (46-58), while also shoo� ng 44.3 (85-192) from the fi eld, including 39-of-95 (43.5%) from three-point territory. For his eff orts, he was named to the All-Conference team. The Faye� e County High School product was a two-� me All-County performer and 2009 All-State selec� on during his prep career. The Lexington, S.C. na� v e was a two-� me All-Region performer and team MVP at White Knoll High School where he averaged 18.2 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 3.0 blocks per game. Ben Arnold, a 6-3, 170-pound freshman guard from LaFolle� e , Tenn. graduated from Cumberland Gap High School where he led the Panthers to a 22-8 record his senior season and became the school’s all-� me scoring leader with 1,492 career points. Arnold averaged nearly 22 points, six rebounds and four steals per game during his fi nal prep campaign and was an All-Conference honoree. Devin Call, 6-3, 190-pound guard from Winchester, Va., a� e nded Fishburne Military Academy last year where he averaged 13.2 points and 2.0 assists per game. Call graduated from Millbrook HS where he was named the Northwestern District Player of the Year and TV3 Winchester Player of the Year. He garnered All-District First Team and All-Region First Team accolades, while also earning All- State Honorable Men� on recogni� on. Call averaged 17.5 points per game in his senior year, while also tallying 5.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in his fi nal season with the Millbrook Pioneers. Mason Fox is playing in his fi rst full season with the Tusculum men’s basketball program a� er playing two years on the Pioneer men’s soccer team. The 5-11, 165-pound sophomore guard played in 19 career matches on the TC pitch, including two starts. In 2010, he played in a total 176 minutes where he recorded a goal against Lees-McRae and added an assist in a 4-0 win over Carson-Newman. The Crossville, Tenn. na� v e graduated from Stone Memorial High School where he earned All-Conference First Team and All-Region Second Team honors in basketball. Fox averaged 12 points and nine assists per game during his career and was also a two-� me All-District performer in soccer. Rory McClure, a 6-0, 160-pound guard from Canton, N.C., played his prep career at Pisgah High School. McClure averaged 22.5 points, 5.4 assists and 3.6 steals per game and was named the Western North Carolina Athletic Conference Player of the Year. The All-State Second Team selec� on led the Black Bears to a WNCAC Tournament � tle and was selected to the Ci� zen-Times All-WNC Team. Ma� Shown, a 6-6, 210-pound freshman forward from Knoxville, Tenn., a� e nded Alcoa High School where he averaged 18 points and 8.3 rebounds per game while being named the Blount County Player of the Year. Shown also garnered All-District, All-District Tournament, All-Region and All-Region Tournament accolades for Alcoa. BJ Fisher, a 6-2, 175-pound guard from Tucker, Ga., comes to Tusculum from Decatur High School where he helped lead his prep squad to a pair of 2A State Tournament appearances. He is a two-year le� e rman and averaged 15 points, fi ve rebounds per game in his senior year. Freshman Chase Ward-McEwen played last year at Massanu� en Military Academy where the 6-1, 185-pound freshman guard averaged 10.7 points and 3.5 assists per ou� ng. Chase Mounce, a 6-9, 220-pound freshman center from Elkin, N.C., averaged 7.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game at Fort Union Military Academy. During his prep career at Forsyth Country Day, Mounce posted 11.8 points and 8.5 boards per contest. Ma� Redic, a 6-0, 190-pound freshman guard from Durham, N.C., played his prep career at Northern High School and was the team most valuable player of the NC Jaguars AAU – 17U team in 2011. James Clay is not new to the program, serving in a variety of roles with the team, but has earned a spot on the roster as a senior.
