and scaling his ren-gallon sombrero onto our hat-rack, Charlie White, of Burin and New York. jingle jangled into the office the other day to tell us about his experiences as the Newfound· land writer of a cowboy song in Tin Pan Alley. The song in question is called "Get Along, Old Buster" written by Charlie, to the music of Allan Pittman. and published by Brown & Henderson in New York. Charlie, who had been song-writing with indifferent success in Burin for some years, clicked with "Old Buster" about 8 months ago and almost immediady set our to storm New York. With Allan Pittman, who left St. John's some time ago and is now working and writing music on a dairy farm near New York, and near the big names in the musical world, he is working on other songs which they hope to have published as soon as "Old Buster" begins to get around, It takes courage, real courage, to tackle New York like that. We wish the boys every success in the world because they deserve it if anyone ever did. • The proud papa of a-year·old John (Buddy) Cook, of Corner Brook, sent AUanlic Guardian Ptatlorm To make Newfoundland better known at home and abroad; To promote trade and travel in the ',lend; To encouraqe development of the Island', natural resources; To foster good relations between Newfoundla ..d and her neigh. bon. ATLANTIC GUARDIAN "BUDDY" COOK along to us the accompanying picture of the smiling young fisherman and his catch. The P.P. in question is Donald W. Cook, of the accounting department of Bowater's Paper Mills, and he informs us that Buddy is "proudly holding his first codfish which he ac· tually jigged himself in about 15 fathoms of water off Long Point, Twillingate, while on vacation with me last JuLy," Although he strives hard for the proper air of modest nonchalance about the whole thing, the personal credit which every father - and we speak from experience - takes from the achievements of his children, particularly his sons, peeps out from every word of Mr. Cook's letter - and why not? That's a fine boy you have there. Mr. Cook ... Nice fish too. B.C. COVER PICTliRE: Rug-making is an important home industry in Newfoundland, particularly among the women of the north where the Grenfell Mission has fostered such activity as an aid to the family income. The rug pictured follows the familiar pattern of the map of Newfoundland. Others feature animals and floral designs. A Handicraft Centre has recently been opened in St. John's to encourage cottage industries and to offer help and training to those engaged in making rugs, knitted goods and souvenirs. 2
