FAQS Guide to Course
descriptions
WHICH LEVEL SHOULD I FOLLOW?
Level 1/2
If you are a more practical person and
like a more hands-on experience,then
a work-based curriculum course sounds
right for you.
Level 2
If you want to continue with a more
academic qualification but with a practical
element, which can lead on to
employment, or be a steppingstone to
higher education then a BTEC Level 2
course may suit you.
Level 3
If you want a more academic challenge
and are considering Higher Education
then the AS/A2 or BTEC Level 3 route will
be the one for you to follow.
These courses are designed to push your
ability to a higher level.
HOW DO I DECIDE WHAT IS
BEST FOR ME?
> Think about your future career.
> Chat with your subject teachers.
> Attend the Open Evenings.
> Sign up for the Taster Lesson.
> Every student will have a 1:1 interview
where you can discuss your options.
WHAT ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS
DO I NEED?
> Vocational Courses: Open access
subject to interview
> Level 2: 4 D's, including Maths
and English
> AS/A2 Level 3: Students studying this
qualification must have a C in both Maths
and English and a further 3 GCSEs at a
minimum grade C, especially if you are
planning to go to higher education.
Please see course requirements for further
information. (N.B. Some subjects may
require B grades)
> BTEC Level 3: 4 GCSEs at a minimum
grade C including English and Maths
IS THERE A MAXIMUM NUMBER OF
COURSES I CAN CHOOSE?
It is the policy of the College for those
students doing Level 3 courses to select
four AS, or eqivalent, courses in their first
year, and in the second year to concentrate
on three A2 courses. The College will allow
some students to study up to five subjects,
but only under special consideration.
CAN I CHANGE A COURSE ONCE I HAVE
SELECTED IT?
Yes, but the sooner you can tell us then
we can alter your timetable before the
start of term.
FAQs / Guide to Course Descriptions
WHAT HAPPENS IF I START A COURSE
THEN WANT TO CHANGE OR DROP IT?
There is some flexibility to enable
students to change course choice during
the probation period at the start of the
year. After this period, it is expected that
students commit to the courses they
have chosen.
CAN I CHOOSE A NEW COURSE AT THE
END OFYEAR 12?
Whilst many students will have decided
upon a two year programme at the start
of Year 12, some will need to review their
options at the end of Year 12, after Results
Day in August.
WILL I NEED TO ATTEND
AN INTERVIEW?
All students will be required to attend an
interview. The purpose of the interview is
to assist you in selecting your courses, and
to answer any questions.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT GET
THE GRADES TO STUDY THE COURSES
I SELECTED?
In August when the GSCE examination
results are published we will review your
grades. If there is any concern at that
time we will chat with you about
alternative courses.
Fine Art
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
A career in art and design will lead towards a lifetime of experimentation, invention and
discovery. If you have a strong feeling for a particular discipline, be it fine art, film, fashion
or textiles, or know that you long to work with colour, line, form, shape and pattern and
that you love to explore and experiment then a career in art and design could be for you.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
It is desirable to have a grade B or above
in art or textiles at GCSE level. On rare
occasions students who did not opt for art
or textiles can submit a portfolio of work
as part of the entry requirements
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
A Level Fine Art
AS: Three Units of practical work:
Research project that explores skills and
Personal Investigation into art and design
practice, finally leading to a controlled test
of five hours to demonstrate your
knowledge and skill.
A2: Specialist project exploring a specific
genre and style which students become very
involved with, personalising their progress
to their interest areas. Also you will need to
complete a progressive journal where you
clearly articulate verbally your investigation,
demonstrating clear understanding and
analysis of your own work.
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
Work is continuously assessed and
summative assessment is made at the end
of projects and units. AS level includes a
timed test which is 30% of final grade.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
There may be considerably more options
open to you than you first think:
Skills developed on your course, such as
research, negotiation, problem solving and
teamwork can put you in direct competition
with more traditional graduates giving you
an even greater pool of opportunities to
consider. It may surprise you to learn, that
40% of graduate opportunities advertised
are open to graduates of any discipline!
Even within art design & media, there is still
flexibility. Graphic designers may chose to
use their design skills in gardens or interiors,
and fine artists have been known to become
well-established filmmakers. It may be that
you will choose to practice in several
Level 3 AS/A Level Courses
different areas - what is known as a portfolio
career. We are not trying to confuse matters
here, just encourage you to consider all the
options!
There are over 70 art related subjects. They
all relate directly to the creative industry.
The creative industry is the 2nd largest
industry in Britain – and growing! Nearly
20% of jobs in Cornwall are part of the
creative industry. You may require an art
foundation course to gain entry to degree
level.
Example Careers & Courses in Art & Design:
Personal Investigation into art and design
using a broad range of Textile techniques
and methodologies. This then finally leads
to a controlled test of five hours to
A2: Specialist project exploring a specific
genre within the Textile range of
materials and techniques studied in AS
which students become very involved with,
personalising their progress to their interest
areas. Also you will need to complete a
are still demonstrating the same skills as
required from all Art A Levels. So for
example Textile students can traditionally
follow any career path onto degree level
including Fashion, Illustration and Textiles,
specialising in weave and knit, print and
construction as well as a wider range.
Studies
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
You are keen, enthusiastic and committed to creating effective and original drama as well as interpreting existing
published work for performance. You are a co-operative person, willing to contribute to planning and developing
ideas, supportive of others and are aware of the extra time out of lessons that practical performance exams require.
You are able to work towards exploring texts and performance of your own ideas and those of others and be able to
interpret published plays for exam performance. You have the drive and inspiration to be creative, think on your feet,
tackle all aspects of theatre and practitioners, different eras and cultures. If so, this is the course for you!
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
College entry requirements including GCSE
English and GCSE Drama grade C or above.
Experience in theatre, whether as a
performer, director or designer would be
helpful too.
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
This specification combines the activities
of exploring plays, creating theatre,
performing plays (for a group performance
piece and monologue or duologue for exam
performances) and analysing theatre in the
form of a detailed, concise review of a live
performance. The course will include
practical exploration, research and
performance connected to different styles,
genres and social, cultural and historical
contexts. Improvisation, devising and the
interpretation of play texts are key aspects
of the course as is the ability to critically
analyse and evaluate your own performance
and live professional theatre. Opportunities
to see a variety of live theatre will be given
throughout the course, including a theatre
trip to London comprising of two
performances and connected workshops.
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
Unit 1: Exploration of Drama and Theatre
(Internally assessed) 20%
This involves practical exploration of two
plays and a set of exploration notes based
on individual response and research to the
practical work and a review of a live theatre
performance.
Unit 2: Theatre Text in Performance
(Externally assessed) 30%
Performance of a group piece (chosen,
cast and directed by staff) and a monologue
or duologue (chosen and directed by the
student) to a visiting examiner. A written
performance concept is needed for the
monologue/duologue to demonstrate
your understanding of the play and your
interpretation of it.
Unit 3: Exploration of Dramatic
Performance
(Internally assessed) 20%
This unit involves creating an original group
piece of theatre, the stimulus either a
theme, idea, quote etc OR a published play.
Assessment is on the research and
development of your practical work as well
as the final performance. An evaluation will
need to be completed for both the process
and performance of your work
Level 3 AS/A Level Courses
Unit 4 – Theatre Text in Context
(Externally assessed) 30%
A set text is explored practically to build up
your own concept of how the play would be
realised in performance. The written paper
requires you to answer questions as a
director of the set text. The second part of
the exam requires you to compare a
contemporary performance of a
Shakespearean play to the original
performance conditions (first time it was
performed) thinking about actors, audience,
playwrights, theatres and world events.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
Students successfully completing the
course will have a thorough understanding
of drama and theatre, highly developed
analytical and creative skills and an ability
Film
Studies
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
Film Studies is suitable for students who have a love of and interest in film, which they are
keen to develop beyond mainstream Hollywood films. You will be able to immerse yourself
fully in the world of the film industry, including expanding your horizons to include world
cinema, historically important and even more experimental films. This is crucial to success
on the course
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
To study film at AS and A2 level, both HCC
and the exam board recommend that you
have at least a grade C in English Language
at GCSE. There is a strong essay writing and
examination component in this course.
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
At AS, you’ll gain a knowledge and
understanding of narrative and genre,
and how these are used by film-makers to
convey their message to the audience.
You will also undertake an intensive study of
the film industries in Hollywood and the UK,
producing coursework and studying for
exams which allow you to demonstrate
this knowledge. There is a degree of choice
in the films you choose to produce your
coursework on. In addition to the critical
academic skills you will develop, you will
also learn to look at films through the eyes
of a director and film critic. You will learn
the language used on film sets and in postproduction
for camera work and editing
techniques, as well as how these impact
on audiences.
You will also develop your practical
film-making skills, resulting in the individual
production of a sequence from a film at
AS, and a complete short film at A2. Some
of our students who love writing also learn
to produce professional screenplays and
submit these as coursework instead of film
production.
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
There are coursework units which involve
both film-making and written work at both
AS and A2. At AS, you will also produce
some written coursework based on study
of films which you will choose. You will also
be tested on one section of the exam paper
both on a topic area studied in class (such
as Passions and Repressions, The Swinging
Sixties or Comedy Film) and in the other on
your knowledge of the British and American
Film Industries. At A2, you will also study
World Cinema, and approaches to film
reception and criticism. You will also learn
research methodologies in Film Studies
through a small-scale research project.
Level 3 AS/A Level Courses
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
Media and Film Studies both develop you as
a person. They both give you new skills and
improve the ones you may already have.
You will become a better critical thinker,
able to spot flaws in arguments and
understand different perspectives. You will
become a more skilled writer, able to order
ideas in a thoughtful and confident way.
You will learn new technical skills. Many of
our Media and Film students enjoy the
subjects so much they go on to study one
or the other further at University. There are
a huge number of related courses available
at HE, from those with a vocational heart
such as Television and Film Production,
Broadcast Journalism or Advertising and
PR to more traditionally academic courses
such as Film Studies or Media and Cultural
Studies. If University is not your thing, you
will still find you have plenty of skills which
are attractive to employers.
Further
Mathematics
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
If you have great interest in Mathematics, and you have already opted to take A-level Mathematics, then you may also choose to
study A-level Further Mathematics. Further Mathematics is particularly suited to those of you who have a keen interest and ability in
mathematics and perhaps intend to proceed to Higher Education on a course that demands a high level of mathematics. Many
universities still prefer students to have studied Mathematics and Further Mathematics if they wish to proceed onto a degree course
in Mathematics. It is also for those of you who enjoy and can meet the challenge that mathematics at this level can provide!
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
GCSE Mathematics at grade B or above.
You must also have opted to study A-level
Mathematics.
interchangeable with A2 Maths modules,
allowing students who study Further Maths
the opportunity to improve their A2 Maths
grade.
Visit www.helston.cornwall.sch.uk/sixth-form
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
Examinations take place in January and June
during Years 12 and 13. All examinations
last for 1 hour 30 minutes and all units carry
equal weight. NM is the only module in this
course with coursework, which accounts
for 20% of the module. Students are able
to resit their module examinations and the
best mark for each will count towards their
final A-level grade.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
Mathematical ability is very highly regarded
by both universities and employers.
An AS or A2 level qualification in Further
Mathematics provides an invaluable
background for university courses which
contain a substantial amount of Mathematics,
AS/A LEVEL / Exam Board: MEI (OCR)
Mathematics
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
Mathematics is one of the most general, and one of the most fundamental subjects that
you can study. It gives you an excellent grounding for any subject and is itself a prerequisite
for many. If you enjoy Mathematics and feel confident with the work you have met so far at
GCSE, then you should seriously consider Mathematics AS or A-level. It is a demanding and
challenging subject but it can be an extremely rewarding one if you are prepared to put in
time and effort.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
GCSE Mathematics at grade B or above.
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
The focus of A-level Mathematics is on
problem solving. The work you will study
will consist of Pure (Core) Mathematics and
Applied Mathematics. Pure Mathematics
provides methods involving algebra,
trigonometry, co-ordinate geometry and
calculus which can be used to solve
problems in other branches of
Mathematics. Applied Mathematics is
divided into Mechanics, Statistics and
Decision Mathematics. Mechanics is about
forces and motion of objects, Statistics is
about data analysis and Decision
Mathematics is about solving real world
problems which are often in a business
context.
Throughout the course there will be
opportunities to use ICT such as graphical
calculators and computer software,
together with the wide range of resources
and material provided by MEI online.
Students have the opportunity to enter
national competitions and attend talks and
workshops. Students studying AS
Mathematics will take three modules, which
will be studied and examined at the end of
Year 12.
Students studying A2 Mathematics will take
a total of six modules over two years.
The units in AS Mathematics are:
> Core Mathematics 1 (C1)
> Core Mathematics 2 (C2)
> Statistics 1 (S1)
The units in A2 Mathematics are the same
as those listed for AS Mathematics, plus:
> Core Mathematics 3 (C3)
> Core Mathematics 4 (C4)
> Another applied module, typically
Mechanics 1 (M1), Statistics 2 (S2), or
Decision 1 (D1), depending on availability
of these options.
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
Examinations take place in January and June
during Years 12 and 13. All examinations
last for 1 hour 30 minutes and all units carry
equal weight.
C3 is the only module in this course with
coursework, which accounts for 20% of the
module. The final module, C4, incorporates
an additional examination on mathematical
comprehension, which lasts for up to 1 hour
and accounts for 20% of the module.
Scientific calculators may be used in all
examinations except C1 which is a noncalculator
examination.
Level 3 AS/A Level Courses
Students are able to resit their module
examinations and the best mark for each
will count towards their final A-level grade.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
Mathematical ability is very highly regarded
by both universities and employers. An
A-Level in Mathematics is essential for
many degree courses (such as physics,
engineering and, of course, mathematics
itself!), and is highly desirable in a wide
range of subjects such as chemistry, natural
sciences, architecture, computing,
accounting, economics, business and
psychology to name but a few.
Mathematics can provide you with the
problem solving and analytical skills that
are useful in almost every career path and
it is highly regarded by many employers.
If you are thinking of looking for a job
straight after A-levels, Mathematics is a
great “core” subject - in fact, it is one of the
most important subjects you can take.
This is because the ability to understand and
manipulate numbers and mathematical
concepts is extremely useful for almost any
job. There is a national shortage of
mathematicians, and employment
prospects are good. There is always a
demand for employees who can think
logically and process information accurately
- skills which an A-level in Mathematics will
teach you.
AS/A LEVEL / Exam Board: AQA
Media
Studies
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
You will need to be a keen consumer of a range of media throughout the course. This means being prepared to study and engage with
many media texts, some of which will be outside your usual consumption. You will be expected to follow the news in both print and
broadcast formats, listen to the radio and peruse web-sites in your study of the digital media. You will also need to be aware that
there are two coursework units involving practical production – you will need to be prepared to learn new technical skills, and to be
self-reliant, well-organised and motivated to succeed.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
You will need to have attained a Grade C in
English Language to study the Media at AS
and A2 Level. This is due to the level of
writing as well as critical thinking required
on the course. There is no need to have
studied GCSE Media Studies, as the course
is taught from scratch and does not assume
any prior knowledge of the subject.
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
The new AQA specification has put a heavy
emphasis on the importance of media in
a changing world and at the fore of the
digital revolution. You will also study closely
topics such as News or Broadcast Fiction.
In a simulation close to working in the real
media industries, you will be given a brief
requiring you to create two media products
to produce in a choice of media platforms.
You can choose to learn some web design,
digital video editing, or to use Photoshop
and InDesign to produce really
professional-looking print products.
You will develop a good understanding of
who media audiences are, and why they
exist. You will learn about the media
industry, who controls it, and how.
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
At AS Level, there will be an exam paper
with two sections. One will require you to
analyse a piece of media ‘unseen’ in a series
of short answer questions. The second
section consists of two longer answers, in
which you will respond to questions based
on your own topic case studies learnt in
class. There are also two pieces of Practical
coursework, with a written accompaniment.
A2 also involves practical work, although
the emphasis changes to give you freer
choice of topic together with a 2000 word
essay. The exam at A2 also involves a
combination of study of pre-set topics such
as Representations and Digital Media, plus
an unseen media analysis linked to these
topics.
Visit www.helston.cornwall.sch.uk/sixth-form
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
Media and Film Studies both develop you
as a person. They both give you new skills
and improve the ones you may already
have. You will become a better critical
thinker, able to spot flaws in arguments and
understand different perspectives. You will
become a more skilled writer, able to order
ideas in a thoughtful and confident way. You
will learn new technical skills. Many of our
Media and Film students enjoy the subjects
so much they go on to study one or the
other further at University. There are a huge
number of related courses available at HE,
such as those with a vocational heart such
as Television and Film Production,
Broadcast Journalism or Advertising and
PR to more traditionally academic courses
such as Film Studies or Media and Cultural
Studies. If University is not your thing, you
will still find you have plenty of skills which
are attractive to employers.
Music
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
If you have a keen interest in creating and listening to different styles of music and if you
wish to further your appreciation and understanding of music, then this is the course for
you. There is a strong emphasis on performing and you can perform in any style, whether
it is jazz, classical, folk or heavy metal. You will study in detail Classical music and Jazz and
learn compositional techniques from both these styles. You will also study basic and
advanced Harmony.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
College entry requirements plus GCSE
English grade C or above. GCSE Music grade
C or above would be beneficial but is not
absolutely essential. If in doubt, contact the
course tutor.
WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?
Unit 1: Performing
(33.3% AS, 16.65% overall)
Students must prepare a recital that lasts
between 10 and 15 minutes. There are
opportunities for ensemble performance,
improvisation and performance on a second
instrument. You are expected to have a
five-minute discussion with the examiner.
Unit 2: Composing
(33.3% AS, 16.65% overall)
This unit is split into two sections. For the
first, your tutor will set you seven harmony
exercises which you have to complete at
any point during the course. The second can
be either a free composition or a creative
arrangement (for example you may want to
arrange a jazz lead sheet into a full Big Band
score).
Unit 3: Introduction to Historical Study
(33.3% AS, 16.65% overall)
This consists of an exam which will take
place in the third term. Section A will test
your aural skills. You will have to identify
chords, cadences, harmonic and melodic
devices and there will be aural dictation.
Section B and C will relate to six set works
that you will have studied during the course.
Unit 4: Performing Music 2
(16.65% A2)
Students must prepare a recital that lasts
up to 15 minutes. This differs from the AS
performing unit in that you are expected to
perform on one instrument only and there
is a focus area of your choice in your recital.
For example, you might prepare four separate
pieces that are by Russian composers, or a
set of Joe Satriani guitar studies.
Unit 5: Composing 2
(16.65% A2)
This is similar to unit 1 except that for
section A you have to complete eight
exercises from a choice of eight different
styles including pop song, minimalism and
chorales. For section B candidates must
submit a composition four minutes in length
and must be based on one of three briefs set
by OCR. They include composing for Film/
Television, Programme Music or a Vocal
Composition.
Unit 6: Historical and Analytical
Level 3 AS/A Level Courses
Studies in Music
(16.65% A2)
This is similar to Unit 3 except instead of the
6 prescribed works in AS Music, the class
chooses one of six topics to study in detail.
These are:
> Song
> Programme Music
> Music for Screen
> Music and Belief
> Music for the Stage
> Popular Music
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
There will be an external examiner visiting
the college to assess unit 1 and 4
(performing). Unit 2 and Unit 5 (composing)
is internally assessed and externally
verified. Unit 3 and 6 (the exam) is externally
assessed.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
It is a very rewarding course and universities
and employers really do hold people in high
regard if they have completed A Level Music
successfully. It is a sign of someone who
is highly motivated, shows perseverance,
works well in a team and, above all, is
creative.
Music
Technology
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
This is the course for you if you enjoy creating and listening to different styles of music,
and are serious about extending your practical experience and understanding of Music
Technology.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
GCSE music would be useful although not
essential. An understanding of written
music is needed but it is worth contacting
the course tutor if you are in any doubt.
It is also handy to have some basic keyboard
skills but, again, it is not essential.
NCFE and BTEC Music Technology courses
are also good preparation for the course.
Experience of Cubase and mixing desks is
also useful.
WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?
The course is divided into two units in
each year.
Unit 1: is coursework and is worth 60% and
Unit 2: is a listening exam and is worth 40%.
This is the same in A2.
Unit 1: consists of three pieces of
coursework. Task 1a is a sequenced
performance on Cubase, Task 1b is a studio
recording of your choice and task 1c is a
creative arrangement combining Cubase
and studio techniques. In studying for Unit
1 you will learn about synthesis, sampling,
mic placements, effects, dynamic processing
and much more.
The study of popular music and jazz from
1910 to present day will form part of the
exam for Unit 2.
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
All coursework and exams will be externally
assessed.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
An A Level in Music Technology can lead
to further study of Music Technology or
Performing Arts at Higher National Diploma
and Degree level. It can also help you on
you way to a career in the popular music
industry.
them to carry out atrocities such as the
holocaust, stress, its effects and ways to
cope with it, as well as psychological
disorders such as schizophrenia and
anorexia. In the second year students can
study animal behaviour, sleep, relationships
and aggression. Students also learn to
analyse theories and investigations in a
critical way and develop the skills to carry
out their own psychological investigations.
In the second year some topics are optional,
but students will study research methods,
Schizophrenia, and then four topics from
the psychology of addiction or the media,
Assessment at A2 is based on two
examinations. There is no coursework in
the AS or A2 years.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
If you think you will end up working with
people or animals then this is a relevant
course! Psychology has grown to be one of
the largest subjects taken at A Level. Part of
the reason for this is the subject’s popularity
amongst students but it is also due to both
Universities and employers recognising the
value of the course and the skills it encourages
students to have. Students with degrees
in Psychology can enter a whole range of
graduate professions and after additional
training become clinical psychologists.
Art diploma
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
A career in art and design will lead towards a lifetime of experimentation, invention and
discovery. If you have a strong feeling for a particular discipline, be it fine art, film, fashion
or textiles, or know that you long to work with colour, line, form, shape and pattern and
that you love to explore and experiment then a career in art and design could be for you.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
It is desirable to have a grade B or above
in art or textiles at GCSE level… On rare
occasions students who did not opt for art
or textiles can submit a portfolio of work as
part of entry requirements
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
This broad-based course is designed to
help you develop a range of creative skills.
The first year coursework includes drawing,
painting, printmaking, ceramics, graphic
design, fashion and textiles and sculpture.
You will be encouraged to experiment with
a variety of materials and techniques, and
you will develop your skills in communicating
your ideas and opinions, whilst you will learn
about other artists and designers
The Diploma is a very practical course that
allows you to experience a range of art and
design activities before choosing the field
you wish to specialise in. As the course
progresses you will concentrate on the skills
for your chosen area and develop confidence
in your own ideas and creativity.
2 year course covering 3 major skill areas:
> Fine Art
> Creative textiles/fashion
> Graphics/illustration
Year 1 - You will cover a range of skills and
projects all based on actual creative and
design scenarios through 6 units of study
developing your knowledge and
understanding for art and design in all
specialist areas.
Year 2 - You will specialise in one particular
subject area, and have a personal tutor. You
will be given an individual learning plan to
enable you to acquire suitable skills and
understanding to apply to degree level
without having to take a further foundation
course. You will be guided through applying
for higher education and presenting your
work professionally.
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
Work is continuously assessed and
summative assessment is made at the end
of projects and units. Twice the exam board
externally assesses BTEC and final grades
are submitted at the end of the 2 years. The
Diploma is equivalent to 2 GCE A Levels.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
There may be considerably more options
open to you than you first think: Skills
developed on your course, such as research,
negotiation, problem solving and teamwork
can put you in direct competition with more
Level 3 Btec & Vocational Qualifications
traditional graduates giving you an even
greater pool of opportunities to consider.
It may surprise you to learn, that 40% of
graduate opportunities advertised are
open to graduates of any discipline!
Even within art design & media, there is still
flexibility. Graphic designers may chose to
use their design skills in gardens or interiors,
and fine artists have been known to become
well-established filmmakers. It may be
that you will choose to practice in several
different areas - what is known as a portfolio
career. We are not trying to confuse matters
here, just encourage you to consider all the
options!
There are over 70 art related subjects. They
all relate directly to the creative industry.
The creative industry is the second largest
industry in Britain – and growing!
Nearly 20% of jobs in Cornwall are part of
the creative industry
Sport
Academy
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
You enjoy sport and PE. You are keen to develop your performance individually or as part
of a team. You would like to take part in competition in your sport against local colleges
and on a sports tour. You are keen to develop your leadership and coaching skills.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
There are no specific qualifications needed
to access this course just an enthusiasm for
sport.
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
There are two parts to the course. Through
both years, students train in their chosen
sport twice a week with a qualified coach
and compete in College fixtures. There is
fitness development and a personal training
programme and our own dedicated training
facility and meetings area which students
can use throughout the College week. Video
analysis is used to enhance performance.
In addition, students complete the Level
2 Sports Leader Award and take the NGB
Level 1 coaching award in their chosen sport
and a First Aid Certificate in the first year
and take the Higher Sports Leader Award
in Year 2 (NVQ Level 3). Students will be
taught how to communicate effectively
and organise safe, fun activity sessions
for various groups.
The SLA Level 2 involves a minimum of
10 hours experience leading local pupils in
sports activities. The HSLA involves 30 hours
leading of local groups and the organisation
and running of a sports festival.
WHAT EXAM BOARD IS USED?
Sports Leader UK run the sports leader
courses. Each individual sport has a National
Governing Body that run their coaching
courses and the First Aid Certificate is
through the RLSS.
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
This is a practical course with a minimum
of written work. Students will have a file for
the duration of the course. Both the Level 2
Sports Leadership Award and Higher Sports
Leadership Award have a log book
to complete and there will be session
planning and evaluation as part of those
courses. Students are assessed during their
leadership on their ability to run safe, active
and enjoyable sports sessions.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
Careers in education and teaching, sports
coaching and personal training, the leisure
industry and local leisure centres, the
armed forces and the police, fire brigade
and lifeguard service would all value these
awards extremely highly. Once students
have qualified as a Higher Sports Leader
with their level 1 coaching badge and First
Aid Certificate they can work as a sports
coach and activities scheme leader – an
excellent source of part time work during
the years of study! The HSLA is extremely
well valued by Universities and Employers
alike as it shows that the individual is
committed and can work effectively in
teams and has the essential personal skills
of good communication and organisation.
The HSLA is also equivalent to 30 UCAS
points. Students will have the knowledge to
keep fit for life and the personal skill level to
progress into senior teams in their sport.
Construction BTEC Level
2 Extended Certificate
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
The Construction Industry is the fifth largest employer in the country with over 1.5 million employees in a vast
range of occupations. It is a dynamic industry that is at the forefront in developing and implementing new
processes and techniques and in the use of high-tech materials and equipment. The industry is highly competitive
and the increasing demand for quality and value for money means that employers must have a motivated and
well-trained work force. Evidence of this is all around us in the construction of commercial, domestic and public
buildings, bridges, tunnels, roads, power stations, airports, and shopping malls - the list is endless.
The largest proportion of workers in the industry is engaged in craft occupations, e.g. bricklaying, joinery and
painting and decorating. All of these require self-motivation, skills in numeracy, communications and problem
solving, in addition to a broad spectrum of technical skills and the associated underpinning knowledge and
understanding. Recruiting people of the required calibre is not easy in a climate of high employment and the
competing attractions of other industries.
In addition to the course is:
independently, as well as being a team
member in a practical and vocational
environment.
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
Completion of four different course units,
including, fitness testing and training,
practical sport, planning and leading sports
activities and anatomy and physiology.
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
The coursework units are designed and
assessed by the course tutors. Where
possible the assignments will be of a
vocational nature with work being assessed
using pass merit and distinction criteria.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
This provides a good foundation for any
work within the sport and leisure industry
combined with a Community Sports Leader
