ICT<br />
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?<br />
You are keen to improve and extend your ICT skills. You will develop a wide range of ICT<br />
skills together with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of ICT. You will be<br />
encouraged to become discerning users of ICT. You enjoy solving problems by using ICT<br />
appropriately. You want to know more about how to use ICT and become more aware of<br />
the wide ranging uses and implications of ICT. You will gain skills that can be transferred<br />
into the business world<br />
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?<br />
<strong>College</strong> requirements and if a GCSE ICT<br />
subject was studied a Grade C or above<br />
is expected.<br />
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?<br />
At AS level there are 2 units:<br />
Information, Systems and Applications<br />
includes:<br />
> Data, information, knowledge and<br />
processing<br />
> Software and hardware components of<br />
an information system<br />
> Characteristics of standard applications<br />
software and application areas<br />
> Spreadsheet concepts<br />
> Applications software used for<br />
presentation and communication of data<br />
> The role and impact of ICT - legal, moral<br />
and social issues.<br />
Structured ICT Tasks is assessed<br />
coursework.<br />
Students have the opportunity to develop<br />
their practical ICT skills as they use a variety<br />
of software to design, develop, test and<br />
document.<br />
At A2 level there are a further 2 units<br />
ICT Systems, Applications and<br />
Implications. In this unit students will<br />
gain an understanding of:<br />
> The systems cycle<br />
> Designing computer-based<br />
information systems<br />
> Networks and communication<br />
> Applications of ICT<br />
> Implementing computer-based<br />
information systems and implications of<br />
ICT. ICT Project is assessed on coursework<br />
Candidates explore definition, investigation<br />
and analysis; design; software<br />
development, testing and implementation;<br />
documentation and evaluation.<br />
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?<br />
At AS level, the Information, Systems and<br />
Applications unit is assessed via written<br />
examination, (30%) Structured ICT Tasks is<br />
assessed on coursework (20%).<br />
At A2 level ICT Systems, Applications and<br />
Implications is assessed via written<br />
examination (30%), ICT Project is assessed<br />
on coursework (20%)<br />
Level 3 AS/A Level Courses<br />
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?<br />
This new specification provides the ideal<br />
foundation for those students who wish to<br />
pursue ICT at degree level or as a career.<br />
The emphasis on the course is on business<br />
ICT so it links well into Business degrees<br />
and careers in this area. ICT is also a subject<br />
which supports a wide range of career<br />
pathways, so is a very useful subject for<br />
most career pathways.<br />
Law<br />
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?<br />
If you are interested in current events, enjoy discussing controversial topics<br />
and are interested in knowing your rights, then A Level law is for you.<br />
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?<br />
Five GCSE grade C’s or above. GCSE Law is<br />
NOT required – most students have never<br />
studied law before.<br />
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?<br />
In the first year we look at where laws come<br />
from. This involves studying Parliament and<br />
the how it creates laws, and Judge-made<br />
laws and how these evolve as society<br />
changes. We also study juries and<br />
magistrates, visiting the criminal courts in<br />
Truro. We study police powers and suspects’<br />
rights, with visits from the police and other<br />
outside bodies. We have class debates on<br />
important issues such as compulsory jury<br />
service, human rights, or sexism in the<br />
law. Mock trials are also held. Students are<br />
encouraged to research topics, make notes,<br />
with learning re-enforced with games and<br />
quizzes.<br />
In the second year criminal offences such<br />
as homicide, theft, assault and attempt are<br />
studied using a variety of activities - role<br />
play, cartoon storylines, mock news reports,<br />
games, debates and video presentations.<br />
Past papers are used extensively to prepare<br />
for all examinations.<br />
The course aims to be interesting and<br />
sometimes amusing, but most importantly<br />
attempts to get the best out of all students.<br />
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?<br />
AS Level – A one hour exam in January<br />
2013 and a two hour exam in June 2013.<br />
There is no coursework.<br />
A2 Level - A ninety minute exam in<br />
January 2014 and a two hour exam in<br />
June 2014. There is no coursework.<br />
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?<br />
A Level law is a good university entrance<br />
qualification. It is also useful for a career in:<br />
