IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?<br />
This BTEC level 3 hospitality qualification provides training within all the key areas of<br />
the hospitality industry such as, customer service and event planning. It will give you<br />
the opportunity to gain confidence and skills such as leadership and personals skills.<br />
The course is particularly suitable for students wanting a vocational route through<br />
A levels. The 2 year course attracts UCAS points equivalent to 1 GCE A Level.<br />
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?<br />
It is preferred that you have taken either<br />
Food Technology or Catering at GCSE level<br />
and have achieved a grade C+ along with<br />
3 other GCSEs.<br />
WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?<br />
During the first year, 3 units are taken:<br />
> The hospitality industry<br />
> European Food<br />
> Planning and managing a hospitality<br />
event. For the event planning module a<br />
‘restaurant’ is run during some evenings in<br />
order to be properly assessed<br />
During the second year, 4 units are taken:<br />
> Principles of supervising customer service<br />
> Providing customer service<br />
> Contemporary world food<br />
> Industry-related project in Hospitality.<br />
The industry related project will require all<br />
students to attend a work placement<br />
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?<br />
The work will be assessed and graded<br />
through various internal practical tasks and<br />
a portfolio of work produced throughout<br />
the course. Written tasks are required to be<br />
completed to pass all of the modules.<br />
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?<br />
The Diploma is designed for students<br />
considering progressing to further<br />
education or entering the hospitality<br />
industry with the potential to start<br />
management training or to continue to<br />
train as a chef. In the South West the<br />
hospitality sector has a large amount of<br />
opportunities to offer with either following<br />
the hospitality route or choosing to focus<br />
on developing chef skills. You can even<br />
progress straight into employment (kitchen<br />
assistant, hotel receptionist, housekeeping).<br />

HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?<br />
In BTEC Nationals all units are internally<br />
assessed. All assessment for BTEC Nationals<br />
is criterion referenced, based on the<br />
achievement of specified learning outcomes.<br />
Each unit within the qualification has<br />
specified assessment and grading criteria<br />
which are to be used for grading purposes.<br />
A summative unit grade can be awarded<br />
at pass, merit or distinction:<br />
> To achieve a ‘pass’ a learner must have<br />
satisfied all the pass assessment criteria<br />
> To achieve a ‘merit’ a learner must<br />
additionally have satisfied all the merit<br />
grading criteria<br />
> To achieve a ‘distinction’ a learner must<br />
additionally have a satisfied all the<br />
distinction grading criteria. Learners who<br />
complete the unit but who do not meet all<br />
the pass criteria are graded ‘unclassified’<br />
