IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?<br />

If you have not obtained a Grade C in GCSE<br />

English, we strongly urge you to try to do<br />

so – especially if you only just missed it. If<br />

you do not have the grade, you will find a<br />

lot of course and career opportunities<br />

closed to you.<br />

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?<br />

You should, ideally, have a D or E grade at<br />

GCSE and be willing to work hard. You will be<br />

able to use some or all of the controlled<br />

assessments you did at GCSE.<br />

WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?<br />

Five pieces of controlled assessment:<br />

> Three responses to reading and two<br />

creative writing<br />

> Three speaking and listening assessments<br />

HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?<br />

Through the controlled assessments outlined<br />

above, and through one exam, testing reading<br />

and writing skills.<br />

WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?<br />

A Grade C in English is an essential requirement<br />

for entry to a great number of jobs as well as<br />

most Higher Education courses.<br />

IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?<br />

Most employers and further education<br />

courses require you to have GCSE<br />

Mathematics to at least grade C. If you have<br />

taken your GCSE Mathematics exam and<br />

achieved a grade D but wish to improve it to<br />

a grade C then this course is for you.<br />

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?<br />

GCSE Mathematics Grade D.<br />

WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?<br />

This is a one-year course, involving class<br />

lessons supported by a significant amount<br />

of individual learning.<br />

HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?<br />

There are two final written exam papers,<br />

each lasting 1 hour 45 minutes<br />

(a non-calculator and a calculator paper).<br />

While this course is designed to be a one-year<br />

improvement course, if ready, students are<br />

encouraged to take the examinations at the<br />

earliest opportunity in November.<br />

WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?<br />

A Grade C in GCSE Mathematics is essential<br />

for the vast majority of university courses and<br />

careers.<br />

Hair & Beauty<br />

Therapy Level 2<br />

IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?<br />

This course is for anyone who is considering a career in the hair and beauty industry.<br />

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?<br />

No previous knowledge required but<br />

students are expected to have a pleasant<br />

personality, a high standard of presentation<br />

and good communication skills.<br />

WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?<br />

You would be expected to attend college<br />

full time, and your time would be split<br />

between studying Beauty therapy here<br />

at <strong>Helston</strong> and Hairdressing at Cornwall<br />

<strong>College</strong>.<br />

In addition to the units covered in the<br />

Beauty Course, additional hairdressing<br />

units are:<br />

> Working in hairdressing<br />

> Maintain health and safety in the salon<br />

> Client consultation for hairdressing<br />

services<br />

> Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp<br />

> Cut women’s hair<br />

> Style and dress women’s hair<br />

> Colour hair<br />

> Perm and neutralise hair<br />

> 201 Working in the beauty industries<br />

> 202 Following health and safety in<br />

the salon<br />

> 203 Client care and communication<br />

in beauty related industries<br />

> 204 Provide facial skincare<br />

> 207 Provide manicure treatments<br />

> 208 Provide pedicure treatments<br />

> 209 Apply make up<br />

> 225 Shaping and colouring eyebrows<br />

HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?<br />

Assessments are carried out in a wide<br />

range of different styles:<br />

> Observation of practical skills<br />

> Written assignments<br />

> Written questions<br />

> Online examination<br />

The course is assessed by student-led<br />

assessments, which means the student<br />

decides when they are ready to be assessed.<br />

WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?<br />

After successfully completing this course<br />

students can progress on to the<br />

Hairdressing NVQ Level 2 qualifications.<br />
