IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
If you have not obtained a Grade C in GCSE
English, we strongly urge you to try to do
so – especially if you only just missed it. If
you do not have the grade, you will find a
lot of course and career opportunities
closed to you.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
You should, ideally, have a D or E grade at
GCSE and be willing to work hard. You will be
able to use some or all of the controlled
assessments you did at GCSE.
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
Five pieces of controlled assessment:
> Three responses to reading and two
creative writing
> Three speaking and listening assessments
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
Through the controlled assessments outlined
above, and through one exam, testing reading
and writing skills.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
A Grade C in English is an essential requirement
for entry to a great number of jobs as well as
most Higher Education courses.

IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
Most employers and further education
courses require you to have GCSE
Mathematics to at least grade C. If you have
taken your GCSE Mathematics exam and
achieved a grade D but wish to improve it to
a grade C then this course is for you.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
GCSE Mathematics Grade D.
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
This is a one-year course, involving class
lessons supported by a significant amount
of individual learning.
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
There are two final written exam papers,
each lasting 1 hour 45 minutes
(a non-calculator and a calculator paper).
While this course is designed to be a one-year
improvement course, if ready, students are
encouraged to take the examinations at the
earliest opportunity in November.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
A Grade C in GCSE Mathematics is essential
for the vast majority of university courses and
careers.

Hair & Beauty
Therapy Level 2
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
This course is for anyone who is considering a career in the hair and beauty industry.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
No previous knowledge required but
students are expected to have a pleasant
personality, a high standard of presentation
and good communication skills.
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
You would be expected to attend college
full time, and your time would be split
between studying Beauty therapy here
at Helston and Hairdressing at Cornwall
College.
In addition to the units covered in the
Beauty Course, additional hairdressing
units are:
> Working in hairdressing
> Maintain health and safety in the salon
> Client consultation for hairdressing
services
> Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
> Cut women’s hair
> Style and dress women’s hair
> Colour hair
> Perm and neutralise hair
> 201 Working in the beauty industries
> 202 Following health and safety in
the salon
> 203 Client care and communication
in beauty related industries
> 204 Provide facial skincare
> 207 Provide manicure treatments
> 208 Provide pedicure treatments
> 209 Apply make up
> 225 Shaping and colouring eyebrows
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
Assessments are carried out in a wide
range of different styles:
> Observation of practical skills
> Written assignments
> Written questions
> Online examination
The course is assessed by student-led
assessments, which means the student
decides when they are ready to be assessed.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
After successfully completing this course
students can progress on to the
Hairdressing NVQ Level 2 qualifications.
